Laguna Colorada

This is an amazing place, full of flamingo and with a wonderful color; red, white and green. There is a small trek to do to see the laguna from an upper view which is great and allow you to have a 360 degree vision.

One of the most unusual and stunning attractions in Bolivia. Laguna Colorada is a shallow salt lake, peppered with white borax islands. It spans 6000 hectares, but is less than a metre deep. The strong red-brown color of this lake is derived from algae that thrive in its salty water.

This is by far the most famous and the most picturesque lake in this part of the Bolivian Altiplano. The sediments and pigmentation of some algae that lies in the salty water of the lake, gives to the water this reddish colour. When the flamingos eat this algae, they also absorb the red colour, which goes to their feathers. In addition, the lake has some borax islands. Their white colour contradicts the red colour of the water. The lake lies in almost 4,300m high. The view is breathtaking. The silence is broken only by gusts of wind and the singing of the birds. Don't forget to enjoy the moment.

A visit to Laguna Colorada feels like a visit to another world. Lying at an altitude of 4,300 meters (14,000 feet) above sea level, this blood red lake is dotted with white borax islands. Grass-grazing llamas roam the shores, munching as they go, and three species of flamingoes dine on the plankton that gives the lake its otherworldly color.

From every angle Laguna Colorada takes on a different persona, sometimes sharply contrasting with its own multicolored shores, and other times melding with the sky above, light echoing through dimensions of tranquility.

It is unique place which is available only by jeeps, but it is really Travel worthy. Red colored lagoon with herds of flamingos and variety of other local birds. This landscape is unmistakable.

This lake is absolutely stunning. The colors you get to see there are unbelievable! I saw flamingoes and llamas there and the landscape was so perfect. This place is definitely a MUST if you’re going to Uyuni, along with the green lake and the thermal pools. Beautiful beautiful beautiful!!!

A place of spectacular beauty! In one of the most amazing areas in Bolivia this is the top! Just stunning, no many words can describe what you see when you arrive there! Really really spectacular! We took a tour from Uyuni and ended in San Pedro in Chile! All the landscapes we went through were breathtaking and at the end of the second day we arrived in Laguna Colorada! Just amazing!

We visited a few other lagoons before arriving here but this one is the crown jewel!

Spectacular. Red borax lake with pink flamingos during certain parts of the year. The landscape around it is just outta this world !

One of the most beautiful places in the area, if the weather is nice. Laguna Colorada is easy to access, it can be visited as part of the tour from Uyuni. The area is surrounded with small villages, where you can spend the night. The amazing bloody red coloration is caused by red sediments and algae in the water with plenty of flamingos.

Just as spectacular as expected, it's just a damn shame that the pictures of it do not do it justice. It is way better.

Most good tour groups should take you here after the Salt Flats!

About a three-hour drive north from Chile’s San Pedro de Atacama, this salt lake in the shadow of the Andes is known for its blood-red waters—the result of algae that thrive in extreme heat. Flamingos (and the lake) look their best from December to April: the lake is full of water, making it more reflective for photos, and the birds are breeding. Be sure to try and catch the lake at sunset, when it’s at its reddest.

Would you rate a more spectacular place than this in the world? Red lagoon, thousands flamingos, rocky desert and snow capped volcanoes all around... paradise on earth

If I didn't know, I would think this place is somewhere else on another planet. Definitely a close second to Uyuni Salt flat itself on the Atacama - >Uyuni tour. It's very windy in the afternoon so be sure to wear appropriate clothing.
