Castillo de San Luis

Absolutely beautiful city. People are wonderful, and the food and drinks are great.

Beautiful area to wander around. This site is also used for events and specialist markets during the year.

First of all let me tell you that Estepona is thousands of years old. Estepona dates back from the prehistoric times, actually there is a prehistoric dolmenic settlements called corominas. You can arrange a visit to the center in Los Pedragales natural park it's only 7 kilometres away. We have also a archeological museum in which you can see all the stages of Estepona development from the tartesus, iberians and celts until the arabic invasion where our current name comes from: Estebbuna. I can proudly state that I help to dig out the skeletons of that area. And I deeply confess that I am in love with this city. I strongly recommend you to visit San Luis castle in the very center of Estepona old town. There is also a peculiar orchidarium that contains hundreds of species of orchids. Did you know that vanilla is an orchid?

You can not miss a walk around the city in order to behold the beauty and majesty of huge paintings on buildings spread out every single neighbourhood in Estepona. My favourite one is a girl playing with a hose pipe. You have to come and look it thoroughly if you want find it.

You can visit Estepona and move around on bike, by car or coach. If you are a nature lover you can go hiking all the way up to Sierra Bermeja mountain that goes one thousand kilometres high, if you are lucky you can even have snow in winter. The paseo of Pinsapos pine trees is unique in the world because that mountain comes straightforward from the magma under the surface containing loads of iron, actually peridotita that makes it unbearable for plants to grow despite that, the wildlife has perfectly adapted to survive in that environment

So, come and visit Estepona and you will fall in love with its people and its sunsets on its endless beaches and promenades.

This is the original castle ordered to be built by Queen Isabella of Castille and her husband King Ferdinand. Not much remains, but it is well preserved, and inside the old market in the next street Calle Villa (the yellow and white building with ceramic plaques outside), you can see a model of what it was like.
On Easter Saturday on both sides of the castle they act out some of the scenes from the town's outdoor Passion play - La Pasión según Estepona. You can read more about this in Google Maps, it is amazing.

Historic ruins from 14th century that were part of a fort originally built by the Moors a few centuries before it was built on by the Catholic king.

Castillo de San Luis,ubicado en el casco urbano de Estepona entre las calles Villa y Castillo, a escasos metros del Museo Arqueológico de Estepona ,la Torre del Reloj,y del Ayuntamiento.
Fueron los Reyes Católicos quienes a principios del siglo XVI ordenaron la construcción del Castillo de San Luis de Estepona, que sustituiría a la antigua fortificación de origen árabe y a la que habían llamado Estebbuna, nombre del que finalmente se originó Estepona.
Su función fue básicamente defensiva y de seguridad para sus habitantes, propiciando el desarrollo de una población cada vez más numerosa, facilitando la repoblación de la zona y como consecuencia la posterior expansión urbanística más allá de sus propios muros.
La sucesiva construcción de viviendas adosadas a la muralla provocó que durante siglos la fortaleza permaneciera casi oculta. Hoy tras un esmerado trabajo de recuperación, podemos contemplar parte de la muralla del castillo, testigo del pasado medieval de la ciudad de Estepona.
En la noche el castillo se Ilumina con iluminación dorada que sirve para recordar el pasado histórico de la ciudad☀⚓

Genial chiringuito, comida espectacular, servicio de 10 y un trato muy profesional. El arroz con verduras es increíble .

el Castillo de San Luis fue una fortificación añadida a un castillo medieval para servir como muro de defensa y para la colocación de cañones. Su interior llegó a estar relleno de escombros para colocar sobre él las baterías con las que disparar a los navíos que llegaban a la bahía de La Rada y con el paso del tiempo, el castillo fue, o destruido o tapado por la construcción de viviendas, incluso la parte superior se utilizó como azotea.

Aunque aquí la mayoría de la gente lo este CONFUNDIENDO con el BAR EL CASTILLO, los restos que quedan del antiguo castillo de Estepona se pueden ver en este lugar.

La esquina sureste de la muralla defensiva de este bastión es lo único que queda en pié, y que denota la necesidad defensiva, en la antigüedad, de este emplazamiento ante los ataques de los piratas moriscos.

El Castillo de San Luis se encuentra entre las calles Villa y Castillo del casco urbano de la localidad de Estepona, provincia de Málaga, separado por un estrecho pasadizo del Mercado Municipal de Abastos

Un sito entrañable, súper romántico y muy muy bonito.
Algo que no te debes perder

Un monumento que lleva ahí muchísimos años pero descubierto a locales y visitantes de hace pocos años. Además justos al lado puedes tapear bien en los bares del mercado.
