So many stars!!! I wish I had more to give. Just a crazy cool place. My daughter and I didn't know this place existed, but we had some time to kill after our kayaking trip. This castle was at the end of the trip and we decided to walk to it.
The roads are VERY steep getting up there, but it's so worth it!!
Oh, you should know that the white plastic container we had was from the rafting trip. We had to take it with us because we had nowhere to put it!
It's name is Bernard.

Spectacular experience! We spent the entire morning there, and my kids (aged 4 and 6) absolutely loved it. We learned a lot about the fascinating history of the castle and the different weapons.

We parked in the paid lot near the castle, but there's also free parking available at the base. After visiting the castle, we had a picnic by the river beach under a tree and enjoyed watching people canoeing down the river.

It wasn't crowded when we arrived in the morning but it was definitely getting more and more crowded around midday.

There are guided tours and we were able to see a sword fight practice in the castle yard. Very cool!

We went on a really rainy day but it was incredible. The castle dominates the skyline as you drive towards it. Inside, the quality of the information is exceptional - they’ve made what I’d think of as quite dry medieval military history fascinating. It’s immersive and tactile - from films to demonstrations and one particular mini light show that tells you all about a major siege, this place is bursting with ideas on how to get your imagination going.

Quirky entrance, which throws you straight into tight, steep spiral stairs that go up the tower. Not for the claustrophobic or ripples... Great castle, good history explanation and fantastic views.

View from Castelnaud. Great historical château with medieval artillery displays, interactive experience for children with guides in English if required. Dog friendly, even inside the cháteau. The spiral steps inside the cháteau are rather steep, so not for the someone who is less mobile.
Restaurant service was good, they got very busy very quickly at lunchtime.

I would thoroughly recommend a visit. History enthusiastically brought to life by the very knowledgeable guide. Our children (16&13) were both fascinated. Tales of battles, tactics and weapons used along with the defensive features of the castle were fascinating. Ended with a demonstration of a trebuchet.

Had lunch in one if the many little restaurants just outside the castle.

Definitely worth a visit

Wonderful experience and tour with a fantastic museum of Middle Ages armaments and overview of the sieges of the castle. The tour ends with a demonstration of a catapult used in the Middle Ages. Head to the museum first then meet your guide to avoid walking uphill twice.

Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle is a fantastic visit. The castle’s commanding views over the Dordogne River are breathtaking, and the displays of medieval weaponry and armor are impressive. The well-preserved fortress and informative exhibits offer a deep dive into the region’s history, making it a must-see for both history buffs and families. The interactive elements and demonstrations add an extra layer of engagement, making it a fun and educational experience for all ages.

Wow! This place was incredible. The history, the number of artifacts, and the restoration of the castle were so radical. Trebuchet are in our time today because of this castle because the art of building them had been lost in time, they figured it out, how coolis that. There's so many informative videos, it's super easy to follow the path, and they even have garb you can try. They did an amazing job creating such a cool place to visit. I walked from Benyac to get here, and I was not in the least bit disappointed.

Probably my favorite Castle in the area, and I have been spending my holidays here every year for the last 40 years... It offers an amazing collection of weapons, animations in the summer time, and very well preserved and reconstructed monuments! I have been there multiple times and will definitely visit again.

A beautiful castle with amazing views of the Dordogne valley. We had a really helpful and informative tour in English - thank you for catering for English speaking tourists.

The wall walks and the keep can get very busy later on in the day, so try and arrive early. One of the highlights was the quality of the exhibitions and models which illustrated the stages of the castle and seigecraft. Highly recommended, even just for the views!

A fantastic castle set in a beautiful valley. It has an English written guide that I used to gain information on all the exhibits.
My children loved the Trebuchet demonstration. There are steep, winding stone staircases so beware.
The exhibits are well laid out.
A bat landed on my sandal and then hid between two floorboards: a first for me (and probably the bat).

This medieval castle has been beautifully renovated and turned into a lovely museum. The castle has beautiful gardens, interactive tours, a real forge (with live demonstrations), and many more.

The castle and its tours are great for kids.

A fabulous campsite in a beautiful part of the Dordogne. Worth the climb to the top from the village - steep uneven track on foot but you can drive up too.

We visited on Easter Monday. There are five main châteaux / castles in the Dordogne valley. Castelnaud-la-Chapelle has been restored well. Lots of things to see and keep kids occupied also. Some of the stairs in the turrets are dark and steep but definitely doable.

A must visit when in the area. Beautiful castle and village underneath. Some staircases through the castle are dark and steep, so keep in mind if with children or elderly. Paid (cheap)car park 5 minute walk from the entrance
