Popped in here Saturday for a soda and cider, as it was a really hot day and was walking the Kent coast and needed some shade.

There was a ten pound min card charge and had no change, so didn't end up staying but the pub was beautiful and the lovely lady filled my water bottle as I was parched.

As a northerner who loves traditional pubs, what I will say is make a B line for this place if you like old, traditional, quirky British boozers. It looked fab! I said to the lady 'this must be lovely in winter' and she corrected me rightly with 'its lovely any time of year'. I agree. Soon as I'm back in this part of the world, I'll make sure to spend a day/evening here.

As I sat outside, drinking the cold water and lapping up needed the shade (I'd walked from Dover), a couple of the neighbours came up from an afternoon swim we got chatting. When I mentioned the credit card issue, they offered to give me some cash for a drink, which I thought was unbelievably lovely. Obviously I declined but still, very sweet. Kent is a lovely county and so are the people.

Can't wait to get back to this pub and spend an evening there. For fans of a good boozer, don't miss this pub. Seems a hidden gem. Beautiful Victorian Style (not original) balcony which is a lovely feature.

Update Aug23* I got back to this pub and sat with Ron the owner for an hour. Incredible beer and he mentioned he mostly tries to source and serve local breweries (Sussex/Kent etc). He's been in the trade years and gave great insight into the workings of the brewery trade and the changes and challenges they have faced as landlords. You should ask him about his days working on the Dover/Calais boats! Super interesting. His beer was kept impeccably and his prices are great.

Can't recommend this place enough.

Oh, and ask him about Ozzy if you get the chance 😂

An undisclosed tavern where Mr. Ron extends a warm welcome, and the view is absolutely stunning.

Been to this Little gem a couple of times in our week's stay in Sandgate. Ron was very friendly, the food was all amazing. My family and I all had different dishes, each one was gorgeous! Would highly recommend! Thank you!

A lovely pub, very friendly and welcoming owners who are very helpful and nice to talk to. I took my mother for lunch on Saturday, they have a very good menu ,the food was cooked fresh , proper pub food that is delicious, tasty and generous portions. I would highly recommend a visit, good selection of beers and wines ,v with views over the channel. I am definitely going back with my wife .

Friendly little pub. Cosy setting and good range of beers which change regularly and refreshments. Best roast dinners on a Sunday lunch! Been going for many years now and never disappoints. Best place in Sandgate to while time away either in the beer terrace sloping towards the sea, with great views or indoors on a wet day.

Great off the main road watering hole! Fab view from the outside terrace! Good food menu (didn't get to try food) and looked good when served to another table ;-).

Had dinner & a pint here. Great menu options, good prices, excellent meal! Lovely view of the beach, but much quieter than other pubs on the High Street. Glad we found it!

Delicious meal, wonderful staff, great company 🙂 Ron is very welcoming and friendly as it's his wife (didn't catch her name). The pub has lots of old photographs around inside and a theme matching the earl of Clarendon car (Austin I believe!). Would definitely return and bring friends. I recommend the steak!

I was only passing through and stumbled across the Earl by accident. Absolute gem of a pub. Great real ale, friendly and cosy. The Landlord is an absolute star. If you like your downtime sprinkled with some insightful societal commentary, then you can do no better.

Great pub, hidden away with friendly staff & guests. We booked for Sunday lunch & so pleased we did, as it was fantastic food, freshly cooked. We sat outside with a sea view. Highly recommend.

Amazing food served in an idyllic setting that could easily command twice the price. The view of the sea from the outside tables is something special. To anyone complaining of the hill to get there it really isnt that bad. The landlord is very welcoming and even helped me brush up on my french. Will most certainly be going back again regularly for sunday dinner.

Best pub in the area by some distance. Nice beer, nice atomsphere and cracking food. Haven't lived in Sandgate properly in time, but still consider this my local. Can't wait to go back!

Just had without doubt, the best pub Sunday lunch ever. Choice of lamb, beef or pork. My group covered all options and all plates were clean at the end. Meat cooked to perfection, perfectly crispy roasties, meaty proper gravy and wonderfully cooked vegetables.

Good range of cask beers and gins! A lovely Old Skool boozer, but with a restaurant.
