It's a pity that the fortress wasn't preserved entirely, but it's understandable considering that the times were not always peaceful in these lands. The castle offers a really beautiful view of the river. And overall, the town is very charming, so I highly recommend visiting it 🏴??????

Beautiful castle don’t listen to the haters. Half of it fell down the hill though but can’t blame that on the stones. Only blame it on the ***** that blew it up. If they did anyway who knows. Anyway visit Carmarthen it’s a beautiful town with a lot of antique shops. Love it. Cymru am byth.

What’s left of this castle is great to walk around, worth stopping by to have a look if you’re in the area. There’s no entry fee, it’s free to visit. There are information boards dotted around to tell you about the history of the castle. It doesn’t take long to walk around the ruins but it’s worth visiting.

Travelled to Carmarthen Castle from Kent 5 hours drive and I can tell you I was not disappointed.... It was worth every penny of the free entry and a powerful reminder of days gone by. Fantastic information about those that lived in the time of the Castles erection and we were fortunate to visit during an off peak season as we had the run of the castle to ourselves. Simply glorious.

A good shot of history, great views from the walls. Makes you think a lot about what's been lost and what remains.

The castle was converted into a prison in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the building of the Council offices has also not helped its appreciation as a military entity. However, enough remains to make a visit worthwhile.
The castle is first mentioned in 1094, when the name Rhyd y Gors is used. The earliest castle, built by the Norman William fitz Baldwin, may have been sited elsewhere perhaps further down the river. After 1105 the annals refer to Carmarthen by name, so by then certainly, the Norman castle was on its present site.

I like the picture of the gallows complete with safety rail. You wouldn't want to fall off that - You might hurt yourself.
