5* LOCAL MUSEUM
- Have been visiting family in Rutland for years and only recently visited the museum for the first time.

Initially went to see an advertised ‘Space Toys’ exhibition showcasing the vast array of toys books and games that came onto the market following Man’s first journeys into space.

Very pleasantly surprised to find a somewhat expansive museum with a huge collection of both household, industrial and agricultural items on display including a hangman’s gallows!

The ladies who work there couldn’t have been more helpful and gave some wonderful insights into what was to come, what I should look out for and some added info on current displays.

Please make sure that you leave a donation (I left £5 per person) to whatever you can afford. The museum is free to enter.

I don’t know if the staff are paid or are volunteers but they do a splendid job.

Favourite part was the ‘rural home kitchen’ as many aspects of it were similar to my grandparents’ kitchen. Years ago.

I’d say we spent 2-hours there but could be done in much less.

Oh, nearly forgot the excellent Roman archeological finds up on the mezzanine floor and the Saxon golden buckles displayed near reception.

An eclectic collection of artefacts with useful information covering a wide range of local history topics. Also loved the temporary exhibition … amazing to find such a collection with free entry.

Visited this great museum at the end of my holiday and before getting the train home. It is still currently free and there is plenty to see and there is an outside area and a gift shop

Donations welcome, and there is a car park adjacent but it is a pay and display

Allow an hour to visit

Really excellent museum. It includes a recreation of a 19th century kitchen, an explanation of how Rutland Water came into being, the history of Rutland and lots of machinery that was used in this mainly rural county.

We visited on Wednesday. Car parking next to the museum( also near Oakham town centre). Very friendly lady at reception, explained everything about exhibits, areas etc. The museum is very well set out, with good exhibits. The information boards was interesting, clear and gave enough information about each item they are relevant to.
Items on show include agricultural, military, police, printing, some trades etc. Lift or stairs to upper balcony. Two sets of toilets. Good access all round. Even a small outside garden area to sit in. Four of us visited( all adults) all very impressed with everything. Not the biggest museum, but you could easily spend a couple of hours. Well worth a visit.

Lots to see, lovely small garden, great objects and small exhibition. A super small free museum which is really good for understanding the history of the area. Probably 1 to 2 hours depending on your interests. Parking behind museum and near front door, pay and display or RingGo app. No cash but see museum staff. Disabled free 3 hours with badge.

Far better than I expected! They've got a full gallows here! I think the sign said it was the last full one in the UK. Very sombre looking at it. Kiddo loved it

Excellent museum with lots of old local items of interest on display. It also hosts the annual Rutland Camra beer festival, which makes for pleasurable day out.
