Had the pleasure of staying here awhile back. It's a quirky little hotel, but with lots of character. Andy and Lyndsey are absolutely amazing hosts. And has some of the best pub grub , I've had definitely. Hopefully I can get back down there, to have a few beers with Andy and Lyndsey and jo again.

Popped in for a pie and a pint whilst doing the Takka Ale trail using the train. We were here for nearly two hours. Friendly barman, nice food, good selection of draft. Would happily return. It sits less than 200m from the platform

Stayed here a couple of nights as we had a wedding nearby, the owners were very friendly & helpful, locals were friendly. Pub itself is a lovely old building with seating out the front, bar has a good selection of drinks, the rooms are clean, cosy, have all the amenities, & breakfast has good range of options. Would definitely stay here again.

We stayed for two nights over a weekend. We stayed in the family room. The rooms were very spacious and the bathroom was amazing. We had dinner on arrival which was really good value for money and delicious. We had a cooked breakfast both mornings. My son is a fussy eater, on the first morning he had bacon and toast. We asked for hash browns on the side but we were informed they didn’t do hash browns with the breakfast
( which was fine ) On the Sunday we went down for breakfast and the owner had bought hash browns especially for my sons breakfast. Such a lovely sweet thing to do. Nothing was too much trouble.
Highly recommend

We stayed at the rising sun for a couple of nights and what a pleasant surprise this place was!

Our small family stayed in the lodge which was a generous size, comfy, quiet, and had a great bathroom.

Good selection of beers in the bar, a proper portion of local ham with my chips for dinner the first night and great pizza the next.

Loved the Breakfast. Again, generous and tasty (and needed after sampling the local ales the night before).

The staff and the locals made this place, we were made to feel welcome from the off and enjoyed getting the local history from the chaps at the bar.

Cheers Andy, Lindsey & Amber for your great hospitality, we’ll be sure to visit again soon👍🏻

This place has got so much history in it. It blew our minds knowing we were in a place which was built in the 16th century!!!. The owners are amazing. There was nothing they wouldn't do for us. We had a meal in the evening and it was outstanding 👌. Breakfast was plentiful and so good. It is under renovation ATM but it didn't get in the way of our stay. There's so much character in the place. Definitely be back .

What an amazing place. The room we stayed in was immaculate and absolutely beautiful, had the best nights sleep The bed was so comfortable. The bathroom was incredible with a roll top bath and huge shower also. The landlords couldn't be more hospitable they were so welcoming and made our stay perfect. The food was lovely and fresh. There was a live singer and she was fabulous. Will definitely be going back.

Friendly, family run business. Very pleasant to sit and have a drink in. Felt very welcome. We also ordered pizzas which were yummy and my friend was very happy they have vegan options! Took a dog, so dog friendly and even a few doggie treats provided. Will definitely be back on our next visit.

Stopped off in Umberleigh from the Exeter-Barnstaple train line. Made the short walk over to the Rising Sun for a tasty paella. Very friendly welcome and nice locals. Oldy world pub and lots of cosy nooks and crannies. Very dog friendly and treats on the bar. Will definitely call in again one day.

Brilliant. We used it as a stopover before moving in to our holiday home.
We were treated excellently. Given a lovely spacious comfortable bedroom in an annexe to the pub. Creative personal touches adorned the place. Friendly bar, great well thought out menu. Very popular with a reputation gained in just a few months from reopening under new management. The breakfast was one of the best I have had.
Great value all round and we will definitely return.

Andy and Linsey are perfect hosts Very friendly, very approachable and so willing to serve Willing to chat along when they are not too busy .New owners so trying very hard to keep up very high standards.
The building is apparently 16th century so quirky isn't the word for it.Not a level upstairs room floor to be found Wouldn't play marbles there ,but our room was lovely. Brand new bathroom, nicely fitted and spotlessly clean. The bed was comfortable and again the room was spotless. All the bedding and towels were pristine, and plenty of replacements if requested, but covid rules are in place
Superbly situated for exploring North and West Devon, we both really enjoyed our stay here despite the rain ,especially when we hear about the heat wave at home, and would certainly make an effort to come back and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone thinking of coming this way.Try the food. Local products Lovely breakfast served at a reasonable time ,quality products. Later we had an evening meal .The Local ham was to die for ,and lots of it on your plate with an excellent choice of ales to wash it down.

Fantastic place to stay!

We were made to feel very welcome by Andy and Lindsey from the moment we arrived.

The room was clean and beautifully furnished with high quality linen and towels, it felt luxurious. Little soaps and shampoos, bottled water, tea and coffee and a decanter of port were great little touches to the room.

The Exmoor room is quirky part of the 16th century building with low ceilings and wonky floors it felt like a step back in time. The whole pub is full of interesting fishing memorabilia and it's very fitting being an old coaching Inn on the beautiful river.

We ate at the pub on saturday and thought the food was delicious (homemade coleslaw) and excellent value for money. The cooked breakfast also was also good quality and to top it off a great selection of other items too such as corner yoghurts, croissants and melon slices, fresh coffee. The bar had a great selection of gins and beers to choose from.

The staff were all so friendly and looked after us at breakfast and at dinner.

The location is fantastic for being in the countryside and walks along the river and fishing. Its a short drive to all the best of North Devon beaches and close to RHS rosemoor.

Overall excellent value for money and a very enjoyable stay thank you!

It is without doubt (in my humble opinion) the best Fish and Chips in North Devon.

Beautiful, fine Butcombe ale batter with a wallopping bit of cod, fresh from Appledore fish market - and only £13!!!

If its on when you go please order it, you won't be dissapointed!! 😍🐟
