Zavižan - Balinovac - Zavižanska Kosa

We all loved it! My 10 year old did the hike without a problem. The trail is extremely well marked. I could always see 2 markers at a time and occasionally 3. Even on the rocky slopes where we had to scramble up boulders there were clear markings.

The views at the top are stunning with views of the sea and mountains all around. The weather was gorgeous (21C at the park; it was a out 29 in Otocac).

In late July there were still lots of beautiful flowers the whole way, even in the rocky crags.

This part of Velebit is my favourite. Beautiful nature, great views and not crowded. Trails can be quite steep and rocky, so it’s important you have appropriate footwear. Hiking paths are well marked but there are some fallen trees in parts, which make progress slower. Spectacular views of islands Rab, Grgur, Goli otok, Krk and others from mountain tops are a great prize. Recommended!

Well worth the drive and hike to see the fantastic views across the Adriatic and where you can see a quarter of the islands off the Croatian mainland. Just a warning that the roads leading to the carpark in the Velebit National Park are mainly loose gravel so take it easy on the drive up the mountain but definitely recommended.

We've been there in the late afternoon in July. The place was pretty much empty. It is an excellent place for a short hike with children. Sometimes climbing like a goat is required. But if you arrive on top, you have a great view over the sea and some islands.

50 min hiking till the peak. Well marked, beatiful view. Warmer clothes strongly recommended in high season as well (late july was 14C despite the fact that near to the sea was higher than 30C).

It was very windy when we were here. But the views from the mountains here are great and the hiking tour we did was fantastic. We hiked to the top of Zavizanska Kosa, then to Balinovac and then to Velika Zavizan. Most of it was climbing over rocks so very adventurous.

Beautiful, wild mountains, only a little influenced by modern civilization....

I would recommend circular mountain trail Veliki Zavizanski Pivcevac - Veliki Zavizan - Balinovac - Velika Kosa - Vucjak with total distance of 8.6 km with first 4 peaks part of Croatian control points (HPO KT) for those who want to climb all 150 peaks included in the list. We have started from Zavizaan parking and toward main road until mountain trail toward Mali Rajinac and Veliki Pivcevac, be careful to go right toward Veliki Pivcevac. Altough June, there was snow all around and some fallen trees on the trails which was not marked well .. they need to refresh it. There are meadows and climbing through beech and spruce forest until stones on the Veliki Pivcevac peak with grat view. Then you go down through dense spruce forest until start of Premuzic trail and road toward Zavizan mountain house. You can go until botanical garded trail, or like us, climb through forest until you reach it and climb to Veliki Zavizan peak, again outstanding view and amazing nature but I will not repeat myself and will show it with pictures. From there we have proceeded to Balinovac through botanical garden and then around to Velika Kosa peak. From there you go down and after cold beer in Zavizan mountain house last remaining peak is Vucjak just above mountain house and from there return to mountain house and finally parking from where we have started this amazing trail I woul recommend to all coming to Sjeverni Velebit,

Amazing views of mountains, the sea and islands. The routes are not difficult if you start at 1300m above the sea (entrance to the park). Interesting place for trekking, even in the middle of summer. The temperature is about 10 centigrades lower than on the seaside.

Beautiful nature. Entrance is cheap. 45 Kuna per person, but that gives you admittance for 3 days! Roads around the park have plenty of signs where to go. Once inside the park there are less signs though, so make sure you plan your visit carefully.

Great place to hike

An area closest to the mountian house of Zavižan in which you can find both peaks of Veliki Zavižan & Balinovac, from which you have the most beautiful view of the Adriatic sea and coast.

Indescribable experience of having the world at the palm of your hand. Ideal place for mountaneering, hiking, mountain bike activities.

Shelter at the end of the trek to the top. Warm people, good food, friendly prices. Cell signal OK-ish.
