A very nice tourist place to visit in Murshidabad. The atmosphere is really nice with the large lake (jheel) in the front of the Masjid with the cool breeze blowing. The place is of great historic significance relating to Nawab Siraj Ud Daullah. One should go and visit this place to have a peaceful, wonderful and amazing experience. The garden in the campus is also nice. There are even few shops selling some local handicrafts.

In the afternoon we arrived at Motijheel. We entered into the arena of an old mosque. A person introduced himself as a guide of the place. He had no demand of remuneration. We had the liberty to pay at our will. We agreed. He also informed that he was the Quran orator of the mosque and his remuneration @ ₹8/- per month paid by the administrator. The rate remains unchanged since his ancestors were engaged in that kind of performance.
He started to narrate us the history of the place showing the existing remains there.
Motijheel or Pearl Lake, also known as Company Bagh due to its association with the East India Company, is a horse-shoe shaped lake. This beautiful horseshoe shaped lake was excavated by Nawazesh Mohammad, the husband of the famous Ghasseti Begum, the daughter of Nawab Alivardi Khan. The width of the lake was same all along and width was so large that the bullets of guns and shells of cannons of enemies couldn't reach the Palace from three sides. He also constructed a precious palatial palace beside this lake which is called the Sang-i- dalan or the Stone Palace which is also known as the Motijhil Palace. This palace was then decorated with different varieties of flower plants and precious marbles. It was located at the bend of this lake. It was used as the residence of Nawazish and Ghaseti Begum. It is said that after Nawazish died, Ghaseti Begum lived here until Nawab Siraj-Ud-Daula took over the palace and seized the residents in 1756 AD.
The palace has been ruined, only a trace of foundation is exist.
The palace has a lofty gateway, a mosque known as the "Shahamat Jang" and the Kala Masjid and some other buildings which were all built by Nawazish.
Our guide pointed out to a big construction. It is a room without any doors or windows. He told that after arresting the associates of Ghaseti Begum Siraj buried them there and sealed every side of the room. It is a guessing, as the room cannot be opened till date. An unauthentic story tells that a British army officer tried to break the walls with the help of some labourers. But all the labourers died following blood vomitting and after some time the Officer commit suicide.
To the east of Nawajesh Muhammad's mosque, is a small enclosure within which are four tombs and to the east of which and outside it is one tomb. Our guide told that there lies the mortal remains of Shahamat Jang alias Nawajesh Muhammad, Ekram-ud-Doula the younger brother of Siraj-ud-Doula, Ekram-ud-Doula's Tutor, the General of Nawajesh Muhammad, and the Nurse of Ekram-ud-Doula.
Moti Jheel was the home of Warren Hastings when he became the Political President at the Durbar of the Nawab Nazim.
It was our great experience.
