Ancient temple located near to Thirunelli Temple. People often visit this temple prior/after visiting Thirunelli Temple. Its little bit inside which makes it calm and quiet place.

It's always a folly to review or rate a religious or spiritual place for it is a fundamentally irrational space that is not conducive to objective attributes such as a rating. One can only review or rate the secular aspects of it such as its location, the architecture and so on. I'll attempt to do the latter here before adding my encomium for the place based on what it made me feel.

The village, Thrisillery is easily accessed from the nearest town, Mananthavady (under 30 minutes) through roads that are motorable for the most part, with the odd shoddy patch. The Shiva Temple is situated below ground level and accessed through a set of stairs that descend into the temple grounds. This does not make it conducive for those with mobility issues to access it. The temple is situated amidst lush green environs which add to the experience of having darshan here.

Thrisillery Shivan is in the form of a Swayambhu (self-formed) Lingam here and accompanied by shrines for Jala Durga (Goddess Shakti who takes the form of water) and Dharmashastha (Ayyappan). Before proceeding, one needs to take a symbolic dip into the temple pond (feet and hands) as per Kairali custom. Kairali Shiva Temples tend to have precisely defined customs, prayer sequences and circumnavigational pathways so it's always best to ask the priests. This particular temple has a highly elaborate system of arrows on the ground that mark the pathway that a darshan-seeker must take.

The white walls of the Garbagriha (Sanctum sanctorum) are adorned with friezes and sculptures that relate to a variety of deities and episodes from Hindu cosmology. The founding legends of the temple are inextricably linked to the Thirunelly Mahavishnu Temple further up the hills in Wayanad. Both are places that specialize in Pitru Karma (honouring the Hindu calendar date of one's father's passing through a ritual). Custom dictates that one who wishes to do this at Thirunelly come to Thrisillery first and then go to the former.

Other than the main temple, there is also a secondary temple accessed by a set of stairs outside the main temple's premises. Vehicle parking should be straightforward even if there are no designated spots. Specific times during the year such as Mahashivaratri might be challenging given the increase in darshan-seekers during that time. Otherwise, this is usually a rather quiet affair.

Now on to my own experience of the Kshetram. I experienced a sense of tranquil, inner peace that has been rare for me during temple visits. The atmosphere and the environment have a lot to do with this. We were here at 0800 and the sweet smell of morning air and a sense of the winter cool made the experience all the more intoxicating. Here, you can hear yourself think.

The best thing to do is come here and spend a tranquil hour meditating on the resident deities or the nature of things or in the state of being. I, for one, intend to go back someday during the golden hour and linger until nightfall to see the lamps being lit and gently puncture the darkness of moody Wayanad.

Calm and quiet place. A popular pilgrim centre in Wayanad, the Thrissilery Shiva Temple is one of the oldest temples in Kerala. The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva. The temple is linked to the renowned Thirunelli Temple in Wayanad. It is built to unique architectural proportions, has intricate carvings, and provides a calm and composed ambience. You can also see a small shrine of Jala Durga, located in a water body that originates from the Papanashini River near Thirunelli.
At a distance of 8 km from Mananthavady, 20 km from Thirunelly and 37 km from Kalpetta, Thrissilery Shiva Temple is a renowned Hindu temple located on the main Mananthavady-Mysore Highway in Wayanad district of Kerala. It is one of the popular Shiva temples in Kerala and also one of the well-known places of pilgrimage in Wayanad.
The principal deity of this temple is Lord Shiva. There is an interesting fact about this Thrissilery Shiva Temple. It is believed that the performance of ancestral rites at Thirunelly remain unfinished unless followed by offerings at this temple. There is a shrine for Jala Durga in the temple premises, which is believed to have been installed by Parasurama. The temple tank here never dries up.
The architecture of this temple is similar to the Vishnu Temple at Thirunelly. The idols and carvings in this temple exhibit exemplary art work. The principal deity Lord Shiva is also very enchanting in his looks. Devotees who visit this temple can offer flowers, Banana, and coconut to Lord Shiva.
