Stunningly preserved example, you can feel the ancient wonder of worship. Definitely try and hire a guide since signage is pretty absent.

I recently visited the Temple of Apollo in Syracuse and was thoroughly impressed by its historical significance and architectural grandeur. The ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into ancient Greek civilization and provide a unique atmosphere that transports you back in time.

However, I did notice that the information board is quite damaged from the sun, making it difficult to read. Additionally, there isn't sufficient information around the site to fully understand its rich history. Despite this, the site itself is awe-inspiring and well worth a visit. A little more investment in informative signage would make this experience even more enriching for history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. Overall, a must-see when in Syracuse!

Really exciting ancient place, worth visiting. It took almost all day to see everything. The first Sunday of the month is free.

The Temple of Apollo in Syracuse, located on the island of Ortygia, stands as a remarkable testament to the grandeur of ancient Greek architecture and religious life. As one of the oldest Doric temples in Sicily, it offers a glimpse into the historical significance of Syracuse as a prominent city during antiquity. Though the temple itself is now in ruins, the remnants still convey a sense of its former majesty, and the surrounding area further enriches the experience for visitors. The temple is in a partially ruined state, but the remains are striking enough to offer visitors a powerful sense of its ancient splendor. The columns, some standing upright while others lie broken on the ground, still evoke the grand scale and precise geometry that characterized Doric temples. The layout of the temple is easy to discern, and informative plaques around the site provide historical context, helping visitors imagine what it must have looked like in its prime.

Ruins of a Greek temple, breathtaking, we are just a grain of sand in the winds of history. I try to imagine what life was like back in its time, and all the people, rich and poor. Bless the workers and engineers who created this beauty.

Amazing ruin of the Temple of Apollo in Siracusa. The fact that a historical site is easily accessible and in a public space for everyone to see amazes me. We are from Australia and have nothing that comes even close to this. We spent time looking at the surrounding ruins and admiring what would have been a glorious and magnificent piece of infrastructure.

The temple is next to the open market, and surrounded by alleyways just waiting to be explored.

It certainly has its own history, being on site I didn't see any stairs, we viewed the facility through the fence. During the day, when the sun is at its zenith, it is difficult to stay in this place due to the open space lined with tiles.

Very beautiful place. Historical place! A lot of tourists coming to see that. It's like nothing special from one side and something very nice and impressive from another side). You may not go inside I mean downstairs however there is still something interesting to see and you may take a lot of beautiful pictures! So if you are in Siracusa you have to visit this place;)

Such an amazing piece of history in the middle of a busy square. We saw some other smaller blocked off remains through out the city also. There are cafe's next to it if you want to sit and take in the view.

Viewing ruins of a temple built during the 6th Century BC is impressing. It is built lower than the contemporary ground level, but one is wondering how humans were able to move stones of such weight without modern machines.

The technique and architecture are also a reminder that even today, we should show great respect for the intelligence and artisanal creativity of people living more than 2.000 years ago.

The Temple of Apollo is definitely one of the most important buildings on Ortigia, facing the part where the island connects to Syracuse. In the sixth century BC, it was born here as the world's earliest stone-pillared Doric temple, and it presents the characteristics of the transitional period of Greek temples from wooden structures to stone structures. The entire temple is in the form of a long and narrow rectangle, from the continuous stone pillars around the porch on the outside to the structure divided into three inner halls by two groups of stone pillars, which can represent the architectural characteristics of the temple at that time.
address:
Largo XXV Luglio, Siracusa SR
How to get there:
Take the Siracusa dAmore to the island of Ortigia, just across the bridge from Piazza Pancali, which can be reached on foot.
