L'orto di nonno Otello

Whether it's the food or the art which drew you to Umbria you will find both in the weekly food markets in town. The rest of the time the art is in the breathtaking beauty of the countryside and small family run shops such as Nonno Otello's. Don't be fooled by the outside; when you step inside it's not a normal grocery. Let the door open and smile at seeing such radiant fresh produce twinkle at you.

At least three generations at Nonno Otello's have built up a superlative network of suppliers to supplement what they don't grow themselves. It is always beautifully cleaned and presented, and nothing unusable ever makes it into your basket.

Local shops like this simply can't survive without offering the best, which is reason enough to come and shop here. It also has all those little extras you need, such as pasta, flour, nuts, mozzarella, cheese, and exotic fruit like pineapples and avocados which fill in the gaps when the local fruit - peaches, apricots, and all those delights - aren't around. If you're passing this way from the motorway, it's an obvious place to stop and stock up.

Service runs in the veins of Italy. The joy of having the basket packed and then carried to the car, parked in the drive in front of the shop, is a far cry from the frenetic out of town shopping centre you may be used to. Shopping for food becomes an experience in respect: for the food, for you, and for those who serve.

In all the years of coming to Nonno Otello's I have only ever experienced the best of Italy. There's no price you can put on that.
