Takachiho Ryokan Shinsen

An excellent stay, the best I had in Kyushu. As many guests have alluded to, the hospitality and attention to detail is so good and more personal than any 5 star hotel establishment. We stayed one night, and found the food to be perfect - not too complicated with every item within a dish perfectly seasoned and matched.

It's a short walk to the shrine, and also a large supermarket.

Simply fabulous, I would return just for the food alone.

Do not be fooled by the fact this is listed as a 3-star hotel. This is an amazing ryokan with immaculate attention to service and quality!

The meals are always prepared with so much thought, as evident from the variety and quality.

The property also has beautifully landscaped gardens which you can enjoy from your room.

Highly recommended but not for the budget conscious.

My only gripe is that the onsen water is not tapped from natural hot spring.

It is definitely a one of a kind experience. We would have stayed here longer if we could. The service was exceptional, the room and facilities were great. Japanese breakfast and dinner are included. Could not really fault any aspect of this stay. Probably would need a car to get to tourist attractions as it is quite remote.

That was one of a kind ryokan! The hospitality was awesome. I am really grateful because the staff took the time to chose the kimono with me and choose the right colors. She took the time to adjust it right so I can look as beautiful as her! Food was sometimes a little challenging but we tasted the real culture and for that I am really grateful. We also had specialities from the area! The room was perfect as well. I also really liked the skin produce! I do recommend this place.

This is an excellent ryokan to stay in - spacious beautiful gardens and clean rooms with high quality toiletries but the best was the food served both for breakfasts and dinners. We had good quality food like lobsters, scallops, abalone and seafood for our meals. Shashimi all v fresh too. yummy yummy !! Thank you chefs:)
For our daily dining experiences, we were ushered into different private dining rooms with different views of the gardens and I must commend on the excellent service of the staff too. Ever ready to help and friendly. The lady hostess ( owner )of the royokan deserves a mention, she was always present to assist, knowlegeable and pleasant and made our stay memorable .
Will certainly return to stay if we do come by again this area. Thank you to all staff in Shinsen. Keep up your good standard!

My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon and it couldn’t have been more perfect. Perfect location in the centre of Takachiho; incredible food for breakfast and dinner; stunning rooms with our own private outdoor bath overlooking a Japanese garden. We’ll definitely be back.

The hotel staff were very accommodating and friendly. The food was spectacular. Everything about this stay was awesome. I would go back, and although it was expensive, it was well worth the money (10 course dinner and ~6 course breakfast included). We were able to get by okay with English which was nice. There was a private outdoor hot tub and indoor shower that connected to the outside. Nice little Japanese garden in our backyard of our room. We went to the Shrine in the evening and they dressed us up in Yukata's to attend. This was very fun.

Also, Expedia and the hotel were very accommodating to our change request. We had to postpone our trip by 2 days because of the floods in Japan and this was no issue for them. If we were staying at a resort in North America, I generally find they would try and adjust our room rate for the last minute change, but not at Ryokan Shinsen!

Nice place to stay. Food is excellent. We were upgraded to a western style villa with a Japanese tatami room with our own stone garden and terracevwith a private outdoor bath. Dining room is beautiful and they serve a famous style of Miyazaki beef by Ozaki family. Arounf the corner is a simple yakiniku restaurant. Take the early excursion to view the sunrise and the amazing breakfast in the main building. Not to be missed. This is not a natural hot spring ryokan

If you are looking for someplace special to pamper you in Japanese style luxury and service while in ancient and scenic Takachiho, this is the place for you. This exclusive luxury “ryokan” with its traditional Zen gardens and private in-suite baths will not disappoint at providing you with a once in a lifetime experience.

Takachiho itself is not convenient as a location (you need a car) but this is an excellent Ryokan. Service, food quality, small touches, all were perfect. I will visit here again one day.

Friendly staff, tasty dinner, private hot spring … it is a traditional Japanese style hotel which is operated by a family. It is worth to stay absolutely.

Very luxurious ryokan with excellent food and comfortable rooms with private baths. A stone's throw away from the Takachiho bus centre. Offers free yukata rental too!
