Biserica Fortificată

A bit more recluse compared to the more famous fortified churches such as Biertan it's worth seeing even only from the outside.

The church is not really part of the tourist circuit, there is a phone to call for someone to open but you will most likely not have signal to make the call so it's best to program your visit ahead, it really depends on luck.

But the Richis church is one of the most surprising ones: while not having the massive lines of fortifications it has a few specific elements of its' own like the entrance through the tower or the devil shaped chapiters. The altarpiece looks glorious in the right light

A beautiful XIVth century Evangelical fortified church with plenty Christian (Lutheran) elements but it also has Celtic elements, such as the well known "Green man". The church nowadays and its visit/tour would not have the same charm if it would not have the Lord Johann Schaas as curator.
It is definitely worth visiting it and of course the donations are more than welcome, as the local Lutheran community is very small and can no longer support the church.

This is a peculiar church as, among regular Christian (Lutheran) elements, it also contains Celtic elements, such as the well known "Green man" deity.

Seeing Celtic elements is Transylvania is rather uncommon - almost exceptional - and the quality of the Celtic representations (sculptures) in this church is outstanding.

This is due to the Lutheran reforms which led to the walls of the church getting painted with overlapping layers of slacked lime (ro: var), properly sheltering from humidity the medieval sculptures.

Also, this church has an 1516 wooden door with elements of medieval automation and the sister door, produced in 1515, is located in the Biertan fortified monastery, very close by, second prize winner of the World Exposition in Paris in 1905.

Its curator, some lovely folk named Johann Schaas (if I recall correctly), is really poetic with some extremely good karma, and you'll enjoy listening to him. He speaks both, Romanian and German and I hope he'll have a lengthy life (he's 94 already) to spread his charm and knowledge to as many people as possible.

Even I, as an atheist, was poetically moved by the immense love Ms. Schaas has for this church and its art and I believed you will be moved as well.

It's definitely worth visiting and donations are welcome, as the local Lutheran community is very, very small and can no longer support the church.

La Richiș exista o foarte interesanta basilica gotica veche de peste 500 de ani. Inițial actuala biserică a fost o mănăstire cisterciană transformată în 1400 în biserică catolică. Monumentul este compus dintr-un cor poligonal, cu sacristie in nord si un altar pe latura din sud, in partea de vest ridicindu-se corpul bazilical, compus din trei nave, despartite de stilpi masivi octogonali.

Intrarea se face pe sub un turn-poarta-clopotnita iar biserica are aspectul acela ciudat al tuturor bisericilor fara turn. Zidurile vechii cetati insa nu mai sunt in picioare in intregime.

Biserica se remarca prin numeroase elemente sculptate. Pe intreg interiorul acestui monument sunt raspindite o serie de figuri grotesti ce dau lacasului un aer si mai misterios.

Altarul este decorat in stil baroc si are in prim-plan scena rastignirii. Este construit la 1775 de un artist sighisorean, Johann Folbarth. Deasupra lui suntem supravegheati de un inalt prelat ce tine in mina doua cruci si ne scruteaza cu o privire severa.[2]

In stinga se afla frumoasa usa a sacristiei, sculptata in lemn si ogiva in care este incorporata. Aceasta pare a fi sora cu usa scristiei din Biertan, pe ea apare anul 1516 si are ea un complex mecanism de inchidere. In virful ogivei exista o floare sculptata in piatra.[2]

Amvonul din lemn este o alta capodopera. Pe coroana sa este infatisata figura blinda a unui pastor ce tine in mina un mielut.

Pe tavan, la intersectia arcadelor se afla tot soiul de figuri. De asemenea, arcele ce pleaca de pe laterale au la baza figuri contorsionate ce par a suporta cu greu povara de a tine tavanul bisericii.

La balconul din spate a fost instalata orga. Linga ea e o figura ce reprezinta un personaj al mitologiei celte, Grunneman, ce isi are durerea intiparita in piatra. Orga dateaza din 1788 si este realizata de catre un vestit constructor de orgi de la acea vreme, Johann Prause.

Turnul de poartă aflat in vestul bisericii, folosit astăzi drept turn clopotniță, mai păstrează urmele hersei și guri de tragere la primele patru etaje. Se spune ca in acest turn a existat odata si un ceas.

Foarte frumoasa, iar domnul in etate care o prezinta merita tot respectul. Daca e inchisa, sunati la telefonul de pe poarta.

Foarte bine intretinuta

Povestea bisericii prezentata de domnul Johann Schaas curatorul bisericii este fermecătoare. Am vizitat multe biserici din Europa dar povestea Bisericii Luterane din Richis si a sculpturilor ei spusa de ultimii sași din localitate este impresionanta și te învață multe lucruri interesante.

Foarte frumoasă. Merita vizitată.

Este o locatie incarcata de istorie, iar daca ai norocul sa il ai drept ghid pe curatorul bisericii (singurul sas ramas in sat) cu siguranta vei intelege mult mai bine istoria locului.

Biserica cetate e perla bisericilor fortificate din Transilvania. Fiind cea mai cunoscută, e mai turistică, afluența vizitatorilor fiind mai mare decât în celelalte locuri.

Biserica nu ar avea același farmec dacă nu l-ar avea pe Domnul Johann Schaas drept curator.
