Ani Cathedral

It was built in 989 by the architect Trdat, who repaired the dome of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The building, whose dome collapsed in the earthquake that occurred in 1319 and became disused, was also damaged in the 1832 earthquake. After the earthquake in 1988, the building fell into complete ruin. The cathedral was converted into a mosque after Sultan Alparslan conquered Ani in 1064 and the first Conquest prayer was performed. For this reason, it is also called Fethiye mosque. We did not have the chance to visit it because it is currently under restoration.

Very impressive building. At the moment the building is covered in scaffolding. Its construction was completed in the early 11th century. Sadly the building seems quite neglected.

The most impressive building on the whole complex. It's still pretty in tact although the roof collapsed a few decades ago.
Inside there are birds everywhere and it is feels super atmospheric when your on your own look I was. Ah obvious must see inside Ani.

The furthest point on turkey, on the border of Arminia. we took so much time driving from Kars but trust me it's worth it and very VERY cold and it's open area and you need to walk a lot so I suggest to get dressed well.

Amazing historical place. Direct view to Armenia. Churches and the old buildings are well preserved. There are signs everywhere in English and Turkish

The major attraction in Ani. Also the biggest structure in the site. You will see the characteristics of the Armenian architecture in this church. By the way, it is way bigger than it looks!

Amazing historical place!

The cathedral was started to build in 987 by Ani king Sembat and finished in 1010 by Katranide who is the wife of king I. Gagik. The architect of this monumental construction was Architect Trdat Mented who restored in Istanbul the Hagiasophia in 1604. When Seljukid Sultan Alp Arslan conquerd Ani, he performed his first Friday Pray here and the name of this monument was changed into 'Fethiye Mosque' by adding mihrap.

This monument stands next to the Silk Road, direct on the closed Armenian-Turkish border. I hope once will be the symbol of armenian-turkish friendship.

Everything about Ani was just fabulous

A must visit. Better in summer if you don't like cold weather.

An ancient city site in extreme eastern Turkey. You have to Visit.

Spectacular and so intact so many years after sadly being abandoned.
