Done Right Builders and Remodeling

The lower level of our home sustained water intrusion last winter. After we installed circumferential foundation drains, our next call was to Done Right Home Remodeling. In addition to water damage renovations, we also wanted to update the layout of the lower floor, remodel our bathroom, and replace previously carpeted areas with LVP. We received quotes from 3 other contractors, chose to move forward with Done Right (Liz + her team), and are 100% satisfied with our decision from start to finish. We were particularly impressed with their professionalism, dependability, timeliness, accommodation, and expertise. We think that before-after photos speak for themselves.

Eliad, Aviad and Miguel were fantastic to work with throughout our huge six-week construction and renovation project. Not only did we want our shingle roof to be replaced and two chimneys removed, but we also asked for a new deck and engineered hardwood floors upstairs. Once the project had started additional items were added: Redoing the upstairs closet walls and installing a new range hood in the kitchen.

Communication was exceptional: Eliad and Aviad created a WhatsApp group for my wife and I to track the project’s progress. Everyday I would review the work and send notes. They were always responsive, friendly and usually replied in a few hours.

As with any major construction project there were a few setbacks and unpleasant discoveries. However Eliad and Aviad held our hands and walked us through the available options. We always felt looked after.

Early on we had asked them to check some walls for mold. Sure enough they found traces, and after further investigation by a mold remediation team, the problem turned out worse than we ever imagined: The mold had eaten through the waterproof paper and penetrated the stucco itself! We had to demo an entire side of our house down to the studs, inside and out. I was relieved though that they took utmost care to protect our brand new windows when demoing the old stucco around them.

A silver lining was that the exterior wall was rebuilt to modern code standards, with plywood sheeting and insulation. The stucco workmanship was excellent too - several of our neighbours have remarked how great it looks. Likewise for the Sheetrock and plaster work inside.

Miguel was an absolute star and deserves special mention. He led the team on the ground and made sure everything was executed to the highest standard. He has a great eye for detail and a desire to do the job well. He even came in on several weekends to renovate the upstairs closets and ensure the flooring was completed on time. He also did a few small items of electrical work including installing a new range hood at no extra expense. Fantastic guy.

The project took just over six weeks, a few weeks over the original estimate because of the mold remediation and exterior wall reconstruction. It was completed in time for my family’s return from abroad, which is all that really mattered.

As with any project this size there were few hiccups along the way, but Eliad and Aviad were receptive to feedback and quick to make things right at no additional expense. This really is the best one can hope for given the challenging and unpredictable nature of construction. Integrity is everything.

My wife and I are delighted with all their hard work, and our home really has been transformed for the better. It’s now a very different house to the one we moved into several years ago. A fantastic result!

Working with Done Right was a dream! They took our chaotic ideas and turned them into a functional, beautiful home. Avi, Michael & Luis were a great team to work with on our shear & strong wall installation project. We searched over 30 contractors to find the right team that could take care of the installation, work around our hours to minimize disruptions to our in home business, work with the city of San Jose to arrange and pass every inspection without repeat inspections and provide an affordable price as compared to many other contractors that did not even consider a visit to our property to bid on the project. The project was completed within 2.5 months (primarily delayed due to the city of San Jose inspection schedules) and their workmanship quality was very good. The staff was courteous and flexible to work with and open to accommodate minor requests to ensure the finishing work matched our existing design. I had my bathroom remodeled by Done Right Remodeling , and it looks amazing. I was well taken care of. They helped me find the right material i needed for a great price. The workers were very professional and courteous. The job got done very quickly. The guys cleaned up any mess that they made and always kept great communication.

Done Right Home Remodeling has just remodeled the kitchen at my Santa Clara home and the transformation has been simply beyond my imagination. They made the space functional and incorporated designs in this part of the home. I now love cooking in this space.

I sent a request for a consultation on Done Right's website during the beginning of the week. I was initially impressed by the site, the video testimonials, and their photos. I got a call the same week (on Wednesday) from Margaret, who helped set me up with an in-person evaluation for Sunday, 2/4. She asked if I needed a phone call reminder, which I declined. But she was kind enough to call on Friday to confirm my appointment anyway. Sunday comes along and I make the drive from Morgan Hill (where I currently live) to San Jose (where the project will be). I was told someone would be at the house between 1:30-2. I waited until 2:30 before finally leaving. The weather was terrible, so I had half expected a cancellation, but a no-call, no-show is inexcusable. I had high hopes, but as the other 1-star reviewers posted on Yelp, I am severely disappointed.

The short summary
-Sloppy design
-Clearly inexperienced with a home addition
-Cutting corners to save a penny that you’re constantly having to inspect and have them correct
-The PM’s are are very arrogant and no accountability

We hired Done Right for a 500 sf master suite and laundry addition. There were so many shortcuts during construction, but the big issue was the laundry room design which was too narrow from the start.

When we realized doors into the laundry room didn’t open, and Jerry (our PM) refused to fix it pointing fingers at everyone else, even us because we “looked at the plans”. Jerry left the project at this time. Next we dealt next with Al his boss. When it came to an end (he felt he was done because the washer and dryer was installed, however we still had an unfinished laundry room with plumbing for a sink, but no sink or cabinets installed) he came asking for final payments, but we refused to be left with an empty room.

At this point Al threatened a lien and pulled the crew off the property. He walked off the project at that point. The owner of Done Right Home Remodeling (Ryan) called me to apologize after all of this and brought the project through the finish line.

We still have doors that don’t latch closed and I had to install the laundry cabinets myself(which were included in the plans), but it got to the point that dealing with them wasn’t worth it anymore.

Louis was our GM, he was amazing and patient the whole way through. The subcontractors and the tradesmen were also very easy to work with. In fact some of them even got to the point where they were warning me about shortcuts they were being asked to make that they were uncomfortable with so I would call Done Right and make it correct from the start. As a side note Louis has left the company to start his own so you won’t get the pleasure of dealing with him there.

The office staff and project managers are some of the worst I’ve ever seen , and I’ve been in the A/E industry for 20 years. They are unbearably unprofessional and clearly don’t understand their responsibilities. They are constantly trying to cut corners and then get paid. It makes me nervous for the individuals not in the industry who wouldn’t know what to look for or questions to ask. This is why I felt morally responsible to write this post. Others who are looking to use Done Right Home Remodeling should know how they run their business.

After the job was complete they did not provide a notice of completion or acknowledgement that project was finished. They continued the lack of professionalism way beyond project completion but couldn’t wait to take our money.

I can’t even express how disappointed I am with this company and would not recommend working with them.

*Update: Less than 2 year Later huge leak (see video below), damaging multiple items. Response time was within 2 hours on initial call. However not before damage was done that should have never happened in the first place. No communication was documented as to what the problem was and daughter was informed that there was concrete in the drain (by their staff), now this week I'm told by the office that's impossible. we have had rain since this last one and there wasn't an issue before so how is that causing it to leak? Will have to have mold inspection to find the smell that now emanates from the room. Spoke with the main office to find out about what exactly the problem was and if that problem will be an issue for the next rains... I was told they will send someone next week. Will update at that time.

Hired for flat roof replacement decided on a 3 layer roof. Pricing was decent, and consultation was prompt.
Bid was set, however when work was scheduled to begin I was informed that they had forgotten to add in taxes (original bid clearly stated all taxes and labor included) and was given a higher amount to do the work. Now the price was just ok but I still agreed. I wanted to get this roof on and done as soon as possible
The initial phase started within 2 days and my roof was removed and I was told we would need a city inspector to come out and see the roof before they could begin replacing. I was also informed that City took a while for this to be completed but it should only be a couple of days.
After a few weeks of checking I was continually told that it was pending. I finally contacted the city myself and was told that it was not pending, in fact it was on hold due to a signature and letter of intent and they had let the company know that. I contacted the person I was dealing with who didn’t know that was the case and never bothered to check.
After a few more days someone from the company finally went and took care of it and we were able to proceed.
After the roof was put up, the City inspector had to come 3 times to finally get access to look at the roof. The reason? the company I hired never was there to meet him! I was out of town (not that I needed to be there. This is something the contractor should have handled) and was only able to communicate via my camera. Needless to say the inspector was irritated and said he was not coming out again unless an additional charge was paid.
All in all this project from beginning to end took 2 months! And took my own time to contact the City, multiple calls and texts to the company to get this job done. After work, roof looked ok, hasn't rained yet so no comment yet. However there is cement in my drain and my rain gutter screens are smashed.
