Karubees Jamaican Restaurant

Flavor on top of flavor!

Charleston has several newer restaurants downtown and in my search for something new I found this gem that has actually been in the valley for three years. I visited at dinner time but please note it closes at 6:30pm and they serve more of a lunch crowd. If you want the best chance of a full menu to be available, go early. With that said they had all the flavors I wanted to try.

I ordered the jerk chicken and curry shrimp combo with rice and peas and a side of cabbage. The jerk chicken was a portion of six full wings as they had sold out of quarters. The chicken was moist with a smoky sweet jerk flavor. They will make your mouth tingle. The curry shrimp portion was 4 jumbo shrimp cooked to order in the house curry sauce which is outstanding. With that said I could order a plate of sides and feast. The rice and peas were my favorite and the cabbage tender and sweet.

The combo is $33 and a single meat plate starts at $15. It is certainly priced right for the quality and portion you receive. A couple could easily split a combo meal and be full.

Sorry there is no Red Stripe.

Excellent service, food was great.
Will be back to try the curry goat and patties.

Pictured is the combination plate, with Oxtail and Shrimp. Great flavor, tender meat. Spicy, but not too hot, and full of flavor. (Your lips we be on fire, but it’s not spicy spicy)

We ordered in person, waited 20 minutes, drove 20 minutes home.

Food was piping hot! Super surprised that it retained heat. Glad we tried this place!

This is my favorite restaurant simply because the food is so good. The atmosphere isn’t the best and I rarely eat in. But it matters none to me. It’s plan and lacks any “island” feel but that’s just for the review. The food carry’s this place and that’s what should matter most. The fact you can make chicken taste that way is incredible. I could eat an entire bunch of plantains myself. The Mac and cheese is arguable the best I’ve ever had. The Corner Kitchen is probably tied for first. I wish I could eat this every single day. I also like the sodas just because they are different. No bad options here at all. I mena if they can make ox tail taste that good it’s no wonder the jerk chicken is mind blowing. It’s cooked for hours I imagine because it is so soft the bones start to break down so be careful not to accidentally eat any fragments. Otherwise it is a perfect meal and experience and in Charleston WV of all places! Keep this restaurant here!!!

Never tried Jamaican Food before,,but now become my new favorite. When I get there,,they run out of everything except shrimp. So dissapointed with that, so I decided to eat whatever they have left. And my oh my,,my dissapointment changed right away. Rice and bean just perfect, shrimp was sweet and spicy in a good way, and collad green taste great. Will be back next time for sure

At Karubees , my boyfriend and I were greeted by the owners Wife , who was extremely nice and helpful. She allowed me to try the goat meat because I was unfamiliar with the dish. She catered to my taste and recommended us the best dishes! The food was amazing! Best restaurant in Charleston, WV! :)

This place is such a gem. The best Jamaican food I've had in a restaurant in the United States (yes - even better than New York and the greater Miami area). If you're not lucky enough to have a Jamaican family, this is as good as it gets outside the island.

They have so many great menu options. The proprietor is Jamaican so you know the spices will be just right. And there are plenty of Jamaican drinks to wash it down with.

I ordered the jerk chicken and oxtails with a side of rice and peas and plantains. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. Very decent portions, too. You won't leave hungry but you'll definitely want more.

Come for the food, stay for the music and good vibes.

The food here is excellent, I got the Jerk Chicken Lunch Special with side orders of Plantation and cabbage. The plantain is 100-0 +another 100 for texture and the fact that it was made when I ordered it. The cabbage is well steamed but still has a crunch to it (cos it's not overcooked) with this coconuty seasoning underneath. As for the Jerk chicken, it's tender, but chewy, listen, this restaurant is excellent. I heard about it late. I decided to try it yesterday. I was impressed, so I went back there for lunch today. I will be back there for their Mother's Day brunch on Sunday. I will miss this restaurant when I leave this town next week.

Our first time trying their food. And they did not disappoint. We had the curry chicken and jerk chicken, with the greens, mac & cheese and rice. This food was so flavorful and delish! The owner, Bina, served us herself, and she was so pleasant and lovely. She made sure we had everything we needed. We will definitely be eating there again. Definitely the most flavorful food in the area! Give them a try, you won't be disappointed!

This place was delicious! I love everything we ordered. The shrimp curry, the brown chicken, and the cloud bread were all cooked perfectly and went well together. The collard greens and rice also added the perfect complement to the meal. My husband picked it up and he received outstanding customer service and such kindness. That is hard to come by these days. I highly recommend giving this place a try!!!

Yum - we loved the food here. Everything was so delicious! The oxtail was so tender; the jerk shrimp was perfectly seasoned. My parents were fighting over the plaintains, and the rice and peas were tasty. We'll definitely come back!

The food here is amazing. It has sooo much flavor. The Mac and cheese is fantastic. The service is super friendly.. absolutely love the place . Have not left yet and already looking forward to coming back

Good Jamaican fresh made food. I tried the ox tails with rice and veggies. The spice was good, but just a little on the spicy side from what I'm used to. It seemed like all the other patrons enjoyed the spicy taste. You'll have to decide.

if you’re on the fence and can’t decide where to eat, this is your sign to eat here!! Honestly 5 stars isn’t enough! This place is amazing all around, the friendliness, the cleanliness, and the food was top notch! I am absolutely blown away, this is the most authentic Jamaican 🇯🇲 cuisine I’ve had since visiting Jamaica in 2015. It is well worth every penny!! I can’t emphasize this enough, this is the best food you will find in Charleston. Skip the chain restaurants, spend your money on something worth it. Karubees is WORTH IT! 🔥🔥🔥
The cook learned how to cook everything from his Jamaican Grandmother! The food is freshly sourced! Nothing processed or packaged! They pick up their food fresh every week and you can tell!

They were almost out of white rice so the owner also gave me beans and rice on the side, she was the best at her job!

Succulent, fall off the bone, Jamakin me crazy. Seriously though, I was a pescatarian before eating here. I’m glad I decided to get out of my comfort zone and try the curry and jerk chicken. The stewed cabbage and rice rounded out a terrific meal. Great service and glad they took care of us so close to closing time. Thank you Karubees

This place is an absolute hidden gem. I ordered the lunch special with jerk chicken, white rice, and mixed veggies. Plenty of food on the plate (as you can see in the picture) for $15 (with a drink).
The whole meal was full of flavor, the chicken had a nice spicy kick to it, and the wait stuff was incredibly nice and very helpful to any questions I had about the jamaican drink choices (bottled) and the food overall. If you have a chance to come here, absolutely do so. I'll be returning for sure.

Visiting Charleston for the weekend and wanted something fun for lunch- Karubees menu is amazing and we wanted to try everything. Best lunch I have had in a very long time, and after we finished there was enough food for three days of lunch left. Chicken and goat curry, jerk chicken, oxtails, Mac and cheese, collard greens, rice and peas, fried plantains..... Everything was AMAZING and has its own flavor. Bina was an amazing host and took great care of us, definitely will return when I'm back in Charleston.

The food is really good. Excellent goat curry. The chicken curry is also excellent. Collard greens and rice and peas r the best side dishes. Some kick to the sauce, but u will love it. I recommend it!

Recently they’ve been having brunch every other Sunday where they feature a special menu. My boyfriend and I always count the days until we can have their brunch again. We both HIGHLY recommend the oxtails and grits and the jerk wings with a waffle.

The people here are so kind and you can clearly see their passion. The food is made with love and is highly authentic. THIS PLACE IS A MUST GO!

I don't know what witchcraft they use, but the food was... Words don't even describe now good everything is! And the people there are incredibly kind!
