Empanada Sonata

This place is the real Cuban deal. I was absolutely impressed with the food, drinks, and service from this restaurant. Way better than the pizza joint here previously. It's "upstairs" from Murfreesboro Axe (walk in, small ramp to right that takes you back to the restaurant).

The food is as authentic Cuban food as you can get stateside. It's delicious, full of flavor, and is served quickly. The empanadas are delectable and there's a rotating special of the day - give it a shot.

Drinks are great and come with a heavy hand of liquor, which is a plus. Paloma was solid but you're in for a treat if you get the Cuban Old Fashioned. Best drink on the menu hands down.

Service is impeccable. Every person we spoke with (entire staff) was friendly, courteous, cordial, and made it a lively experience. Never experienced that level of service anywhere before on the Square.

Seriously my new favorite spot. Can't wait to go back.

Empanada Sonata Cuban Restaurant was a fun surprise! We were able to call ahead & were seated so quickly. We tried couple of appetizers. Fun & delicious! We ordered different entrees to try. They were all really good! We had food left over. Desserts were amazing!
The service was great & fast. The decor was fun.
There’s an axe throwing place in the front of the building. They were all booked up that night. We didn’t get to try that. Another time.
This would be fun date night!!

This place was so yummy.
The Cuban sandwich took me somewhere, the maduros where fried to perfection and the sauce that came with it wasn't even needed. The home fries where delicious and the lemonade guava juice combo I came up with was refreshing and summertime. Even the mayo and had a lil something to it. And the music was good. And the art work. I just feel in love with a little slice of Cuba and Puerto Rican above an axe throwing place..and I got my mom a slice of Rum cake made from a local Hispanic bakery.

Wow.. It's a little unusual. You have to walk through an ax throwing business to get to the restaurant.  As the restaurant reveals itself with every step you are transported to another place. Bright happy Cuban music fills the air. You find yourself feeling like you need a beverage with an umbrella in it.  I sat at the bar and ordered the empanada special El pastor and Canoa De Platano Maduro.  The staff was friendly and helpful explaining the menu. The food was very Cuban influenced and a must try for a foodie. Tasted great and well executed! As I was eating I truly forgot I was sitting in Murfreesboro. Kind of felt like I was in a Cuban restaurant in Miami. I will absolutely come back and I will definitely bring friends and try out the ax throwing next door as well :)

We ordered takeaway and loved our food. I thought his ropa vieja felt a little oily but dry, but he loved it. He really liked the traditional rice, and he enjoyed the mac n cheese. I really really enjoyed my pernil al horno. The yuca plantain mash may have been my favorite thing, though, and the collards were also great. High praise from him on the croquetas de jamon. He said he could eat them all day long, esp with the sauce!
I had more than half of my meal left, which I've split into 2 more meals, so the price to me was great. His meal was $16 and he ate it in one sitting, so he had a different value assessment than I did.
All said, we'll be back. We just hope they get busier, as the place was pretty empty when he picked up our order!

3/24 update: Stopped by The Empanada Sonata for some takeaway DRANKS tonight.
If you're ever there for food, my order is always (and can still be, thank goodness) the pernil el horno with yuca plantain mash and collards. They all go so well together.
I've told people about but never actually participated in the takeaway adult beverages here before tonight and YAS.

This Cuban Old Fashioned is really really good, and the mojito might be the best I've had in quite some time. I had her put both my mojitos in the same cup. Let's be real; I'm drinking both of them anyway.

They're guaranteed to please your tastebuds with something in this joint. Go!
And you could even throw axes while you're there 😂🤷

Pros: This place is fantastic! The food has great flavor! The owner and staff (our server: Brandon) are really nice. The bathrooms are clean and if you have a baby there's a baby changing area.

Cons: The guy at the bar forgot to make my virgin Pina Colada. However, once I got it...it was deeeeelicious! I wish a couple of the dishes (like Mofongo) were available every day and not certain days.

Other: There are only about 10 tables or so. For me, that's not a big deal but for you if you have a bigger party, it may be. There's a bar area as well.

Overall: DEFINITELY worth a try! I will definitely be going back to try some other yummy dishes. The pros definitely outweigh the cons. No one's perfect after all... But they are up there😁

We live in Shelbyville but always like to come to murfreesboro and try new places ! I had my eyes on this place for awhile just never took the time to visit! And Wow! Can't Believe we had never been here til yesterday! We went a little past lunch time . There were several other people there but surprisingly we did not wait a long time for anything!
Food was so delicious! Especially like the name says it " the empanadas !!! Omg 😍 the beef ones were our favorite!
My husband is from D.R and grew up eating empanadas so this really hit the spot! The place is so cute and music and everything really gives you the cuban vibes in all the good ways! I felt like we were in Havana without even having to fly out 🤗

Absolutely delicious empanadas, great size, fair price, great location in downtown Murfreesboro TN and mins away from MTSU. Anyone who loves Cuban food will be very impressed with their menu.

Been three hours since my meal and I'm still thinking about the amazing MOFONGO I had here. It is pretty authentic considering I've been waiting to have a good mofongo for about 5 years now and pleasantly surprised I found it in Middle Tennessee. Love this place, great hospitality and great ambience! Love their everyday specials and would definitely come back for drinks.

I was looking for authentic Cuban food for my daughter's quinceanera. It is not very prevelant here in Middle Tennessee. I am so happy that I found Empanada Sonata! They came through for me with a large order, that was somewhat last minute. Everyone at the party LOVED the food! The service from their team was also spectacular. I definitely recommend enjoying the flavors of Empanada Sonata as often as possible! :-)

If you are looking for a good place to eat with nice people serving, delicious food And A different place with good pictures in the wall. It is just wonderful.

This place is a gem in the heart of murfreesboro! We are originally from south Florida and are used to getting this anywhere not to mention having family that made it from their own family recipes. You will not find anything like this here in murfreesboro and once you try it you will want it again if you do! Good food with the taste of the Caribbean! Must tries are the Chicken Empanadas, Ropa Vieja with arroz con gandules and maduros and the Pernil with white rice/black beans and maduros!

The food was phenomenal and the service was spectacular. Some pf the best fried plaintains EVAH. So glad to find this gem!!

Being Cuban myself, my standards are very high, and, truth be told, I didn't want to get my hopes up because I've been severely disappointed in the past, but they truly exceeded my expectations!! Oh my goodness this place was amazing!! Went in for my first time and it felt like I was in another country! The drinks were awesome, the people were really nice, but the food was exceptional! I didn't know what to try but it was all good! So tasty and flavorful! I especially liked the dressings and sauces. We even called ahead to see how long the wait was on a Friday night and there was no wait and when we arrived, they had a table reserved for us. Super good time here, will definitely be back!

We found The Empanada Sonata when it was a food truck a few years ago and LOVED IT! When they opened their brick & mortar location, we were one of the first to visit and continue to support this incredible restaurant. It's a must when visitors come to town. The food is extremely flavorful as well as plentiful. The atmosphere is warm & welcoming. But what sets them apart, in my opinion, is the staff and owners! Walking in is like going home! Everyone smiles and greets you like your family. The owner, when she's not helping out, stops by each table to talk and check on things. The other owner is in the kitchen turning out plate after plate of deliciousness. They all go above and beyond to make each diners experience a great one. Keep doing what you're doing Empanada Sonata peeps-we love you guys!!

My wife Rebecca and I love this place, the food is out of this world. Really different then anything we tasted. The also do delivery. My wife absolutely loves it. The atmosphere is great, family owned. They are Family oriented. The owners are really amazing, they go above and beyond to make your experience one of a kind. They are always introducing new foods. They are really a place to try out here even if your just passing through. They have a great staff. Great people to be around. Just overall a amazing place to eat and relax and laugh and have a good time. We order from them all the time.
