As a kid, my high school teacher brought my class to her studio here, and we made some ink prints. I fell in love with McGufdey and have returned often to take in local artists' work. Just go in and walk the halls. You never know who's studio will be open or the art you'll encounter. I can't recommend it more!

Great opportunity to meet real people who make real art. Art that is accessible to a philistine like me, because the artists at McGuffey are excellent teachers as well. I've learned about glass-blowing from Chip Hall and have seen photographic artist Scott Smith manipulate light & shadow using the simplest tools to produce the most elegant images. Having a multi-generational mix of learners in the building, makes for a contagious enthusiasm about a subject that doesn't come easily to many of us. This place is a real gem. Try it on First Fridays when the locals come to rub elbows and share vino in a convivial atmosphere of artistic indulgence!

A great space both for viewing finished art and art in process, and for talking informally with artists. Three full floors of really varied and creative works in multiple media.

If you live in the Charlottesville are or are just visiting, a visit to the McGuffy Art Center is definitely in order. The art displays are varied and wonderful and rooms are often open to see what art is being created in each studio. You will see medium that is truly unique and amazing. Art is available for purchase as well.

This is a fun place to visit. We enjoyed the current art displays as well as active studios. Working artists are creating; many have open studios and will answer questions. The displayed art rotates, so we'll be going back soon.

I've lived here for about seven years, and somehow never visited McGuffey until 2022. I showed up very late to the First Friday opening, and was thrilled to see some very good work. The community that has been long established there feels genuine and authentic and present. Pieces were very affordable, and during the First Friday opening, nearly all of the studios were open to visitors and conversations. Highly recommended, thoroughly encouraged.

You have to bear in mind that Charlottesville is a small place so this is not the kind of museum you would find in New York or DC. That being said, there are great local artists and lots of awesome things going on.

I love this place! Unique and changing art on the walls, most studios you’re welcome to come into and take a look at the artists at works! I haven’t attended any of the classes here but stop in to look around on a regular basis! Love it.

The McGuffey building was a former grade school and now houses three floors of artist studios and a gift shop featuring their art. It's a pleasant escape from the world outside for a few hours. The halls exhibit artists' works and change monthly. You can also visit the artists in their studios while you're there.

Every town needs a place like this and it's great that this one provides so much for the community and is so central to downtown.
