Virginia Diner

While traveling from Chesapeake VA to Roanoke VA on 460 I kept seeing signs for the Virginia Diner, the pictures of food and desserts did the trick. I entered the town of Wakefield Virginia, the peanut capital of the world. I found the Virginia Diner, which has been in business for over 90 years. It was featured on Diners Drive-Ins and dives.
I came to the parking lot and realized there wasn't room for my truck, I took a chance and took the side road behind the building and found a huge parking lot big enough for my truck and maybe three or four others. I made my way to the front door, walked inside and was surprised to find a brightly lit, clean modern dining area that was full of happy people being served by happy people. My waitress Kay, gave me a smile, a menu and took my drink order.
I decided I was going to get my money's worth today. There were lunch specials, a la carte and the buffet. I chose the latter and am glad I did. The salad was fresh and the ingredients were normal buffet salad fixings, spring mix, tomatoes, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, slaw, peppers and all the necessary things you need.
Kay brought me my 1000 Island. A unique concept, it left more room on the buffet table for fixings and kept it much cleaner with no mess from spillage.+++
Them the fun began, I went back to the buffet to find fresh fried chicken, ham, corn souffle green beans deviled eggs and meat balls in a sweet marinara sauce. I returned to the table to find soft yummy yeast rolls and real butter waiting. 1. Ham, tasty sliced baked ham.
2. Fried chicken, crispy breaded, white meat, soft juicy flavorful(good). 3. Green Beans, cooked just right, flavorful. 4. Corn Souffle, I don't know who invented this dish but it was so good it was like chocolate candy on Christmas morning.
5. The deviled eggs tasted just like my grandma used to make.
6. Meatballs, these were so tasty, so savory, so good. I wish there was some pasta, I even went back to look, but no.
I asked Kay about it and she shook her head. I got an idea to make little mini meatball subs with the soft yeast rolls.
So Kay brought me more rolls, the meatballs were so good. I went back and got seconds.
There was also a baked barbecue chicken that was fall off the bone delicious.... I ate so much of this good food, there was no room for dessert.
Now I ain't no Guy Fieri, but I do know good food when I run into it, so I suggest you all run to the Virginia Diner, it's well worth the visit, I guarantee it.

We kept seeing the signs on way to Richmond. Had to stop and sure am glad I did. Everything was really good and great service with friendly people. Thank you.

All of the food we had was incredible! It was awesome portions for the price, nice and hot, and tasted fantastic! Our server was awesome and so helpful, especially with our allergy challenges. The hour drive out there was definitely worth it! Will definitely be back again!

Probably the best smoked brisket of my life. Potato salad as good as my Grams and seasoned green beans you just don't get from restaurants. And homemade Banana Pudding to round out the meal.

Stopped here with a friend for Sunday lunch. Heard about this place from being on TV. It's good southern home cooking to me. Enjoyed the meatloaf, Mac and cheese, and collards. Nothing fancy but worth the money. Nice little store in front as well. Service was quick and food out fast. If ever here again, I will definitely be returning.

OMG!! What can I say. This place is awesome. Did online order for Lemon Chess pie; it was delicious. My only regret I wish I was in person to pick it up. Since it has to be frozen to ship; the crust was a bit soggy. However it is still a delicious product. Well made. I will definitely order again in the future. Again, the staff is "Awesome"*** Ms. Carlene and her team are the BEST. Thank you guys for a great job.

Really good food. Little slow, but worth it

Big shout out to January. She was our waitress today. It was 2 adults and 4 kiddos and she was amazing with them. The food was delicious. Nice clean place. This was our 1st time going. We will definitely be going back.

A great restaurant we would visit often when we lived in Virginia. Great food, great service, real country cooking and plenty on your plate for a fair price. The buffet selections made a great Brunch in every respect. We would always get some peanuts and peanut brittle in the Restaurant Store , the unsalted dry roasted are the best VA peanuts around. Now that we live in Florida, we regularly order peanuts from their on line store and always have fast reliable delivery with every order. Great place for food and peanuts!

Homestyle cooking, hearty portions with something for everyone. Between the 4 of us: we had liver and onions broiled scallops, and a club sandwich. Fried pickles as an appetizer, and the sides included fries, mashed potatoes, candied yams, spiced apples, and Mac & cheese. I don't think any of us left any food on our plates. We planned on trying dessert but everyone was too full. Wish I wasn't just passing thru: I'd love to come back!

On a trip from the mountains of VA back to NC, we stopped in for a quick bite! We knew of this place from their well known peanuts but decided to give it a try!

Overall I was impressed! The pricing was pretty cheap considering the quality of the food! They had a buffet as well but I had a philly cheese steak. The waitress was incredibly kind and was constantly ensuring that my party was taken care of! Would definitely stop by!!

We came there with a large group after my uncle's funeral and the staff couldn't have been nicer to us!! They all had a smile on their face and were very helpful with our group. They explained they were short staffed, but they would do their best! (and they did). The food was delicious!! If I'm ever in the area again I will definitely go back!!

This is an old school diner with great tasting food. My husband and I were just driving through and stopped by. We grabbed the club sandwich and fries. That was the tastiest club sandwich! Nothing fancy or extra, just great flavors on a perfectly executed club sandwich. We were pleasantly surprised. Will absolutely recommend to anyone passing through I also got to taste their peach cobbler too. Again, perfectly seasoned throughout, even the peaches! Anywho, just our two cents!

Always driven by on the way to the beach but never stopped in. Stopped today right before the church rush and the service was very friendly and the food was perfect. I used to own a diner and I struggled to find diner food that felt the same at my own place until now. The food is perfect. Highly recommend.

Homey atmosphere, ham biscuits were delicious. First time for Brunswick stew it was tasty. Rail car burger was delicious.

Best country fried steak I've had in forever. Real southern cooking with food coming out relatively quickly! We were sitting as a table of five for about... 15 minutes or so? The entire order came out around then for all of us and food was delicious! I 100% recommend this place!

Very nice restaurant that we discovered almost by chance, reading the signs along the road but that would have been a pity to miss!
The BBQ pork is very good along with a large choice of sites (try the sweatened yam and the carrot soufflé that is very original)

Great southern buffet restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious and I got hooked on there Peanut Butter Pie. 🥧 Great atmosphere and Staff. Will go back there again.👍🏾

We stopped twice on the same day. Breakfast was stellar. Absolutely delish.
We got the buffet on the way back and that was so so. Really the fried chicken was dry and I wish I had ordered something off the menu. We've had the buffet years ago and out was awesome so thinking we hit an off night. Try them anyway.

Super-nice people...waited after closing for me to get there to pick up my takeout order - and it was the employee's birthday! I was coming from over an hour away so I appreciated the Customer service! I tried their peanut pie - really good and worth the trip. It's somewhat like a pecan pie but with Virginia peanuts instead of those awful pecans.
