White county is halfway between Knoxville & Nashville in the Upper Cumberland and it is known for having a beautiful landscape of rolling forested hills, hidden creeks, waterfalls, caves, more.

Virgin Falls Natural Area is one of these exceptional places in White country. With 1,000 acres of picturesque wilderness with hiking trails, campsites, waterfalls & caves. You’ll want to stop by one day soon.

The area gets its name from a magnificent waterfalls that gets its waters from an underground creek that appears long enough above ground to fall over a 100+ foot cliff.

On this hike we decided to do Virgin Falls Trail, but instead of going in and out... we did the newer connecting trail between Virgin Falls and Lost Creek Falls... another beautiful waterfall about 10 miles away.

It made for a long day, and if you plan to do the trails know that they are in the moderate side of difficult with rocky and sometimes muddy areas.

On this day we did 11.9 miles and climbed up and down enough to equal doing 331 floors worth of staircases.

However, it was all completely worth it, but I would recommend hiking 🥾 in and spending the night at one of the rustic campsites 🏕 instead of doing it all in one day.

Enjoy the video, but know that the camera cannot do this place justice. 😊

Great spot for hiking, camping, and relaxing. Martha's pretty point is an overlook. Hike down to Big Laurel Falls and further down for Virgin Falls and the Caney Fork River. Campsites at all 3 locations are great. Four miles one way to Virgin Falls. Totally doable dayhike. The terrain is somewhat rugged after 2 miles. It's decent going in and an ascent coming back. One of my favorite places.

A great waterfall, love how it disappeared into a sinkhole. Both times I have hiked here, it was worth as the water was flowing and I had ut to mysrlf or just a few other people (get an early start) Campsites are right by the falls.

The waterfall is amazing! Plenty of places to slip and fall if you're not watching what you're doing. Respect the caves when caving season is over. We will publicly shame you for disturbing the caves inhabitants.

The hike down to the falls is great, and the hike back out is DEFINITELY tough, but the waterfall is beautiful and the camping spots are great! Also pictured: Big Laurel Falls.

Beautiful, but tough hike. Second time, brought my wife with me this trip. She loved it as well.

Lots of uphill climbing on the return, but only for about a half mile or so. Absolutley gorgeous hike. Tons of shade and plenty of sunshine. Water friendly shoes are suggested.

This is the waterfall named for this trail and we can see why. WOW and this is the 3 fall.

It was a great experience to visit this waterfall but one of the most difficult to hike.

This was my first hike after being mostly indoors for over a year due to the pandemic. This is a hike that is rated hard or strenuous, and is about 4.5 to 5 miles one way. It's shaded all of the way, which is good. The main waterfall at the end is worth the effort of getting there. There are a couple of smaller sights along the way (a smaller waterfall and a mountain/hill overlook). The hike back is where it got challenging for me. I'd suggest having a hiking buddy or two to go with you if you're like me and have little to no hiking experience.

The Virgin Falls Natural area is a must do day hike for anyone visiting the Sparta, TN area. Of all the parks and waterfalls I visited this one was an absolute gem. To explore most of the areas you are looking at a 9-10 mile round trip but well worth your day and more if you have time. The namesake falls are fabulous but make sure you you take the trail to the top to see the cave it originates from as well as some spectacular ledges to view the falls from the side. If time permits take the Sheep Cave Loop back so you can see a bonus waterfall and if your brave enough explore a really 'cool' cave . Big Laurel falls are also wonderful and space allows you to walk behind and see them from the back. The hike is considered strenuous but to be honest the only portion I would classify as strenuous might be the hike from Big Laurel Falls back to the Cable Creek Crossing...otherwise its a rolling hike through a beautiful forest. Put this one on the top of your list before any other falls in the area...seriously it's not to be missed.

Don't be deterred, but it's a hard hike in to the falls. Wear good shoes and bring at least a few litres of water. Don't miss Sheep Cave. If like me you brought a small flashlight, you won't make it very far in. It swallows light.
