Lafayette Coney Island

Superb. No frills. Coney sauce comes out piping hot. Chili cheese fries weren’t pretty but they tasted divine. Open late so be sure to stop here after a couple drinks in the city.

We visited Lafayette as part of the Coney Island war in Detroit. The restaurant has an old school diner vibe, and as a bonus, it opens late, so we found ourselves sitting on the counter late at night wishing for something warm to soothe my soul.

I found Lafayette chili to be the best in Detroit so far. The chili is comforting and full of subtle flavours, but it elevated the experience of the Coney Island. The sausage has the right snap, and compliments the chili and onion. The Lafayette Special comes with ground beef on the top of the Coney Island, and I found the seasonings on the meat to round off the entire dish.

Everyone working behind the counter was friendly and engaging. I would copy the same recommendation as other reviewers: for complete experience, do check out the washroom. I know that the war for Coney Island in Detroit would continue, and I doubt my review would cast the deciding vote, but I really enjoyed my visit there, and I definitely would visit again when I'm in the area.

Kind of like a hole in the wall with simple but fantastic hot dogs. We ordered a couple of Coney Island dogs with cheese fries. The dogs were cooked perfectly and tasted great. The cheese fries were good as well. It's a cheap place to eat with friendly service.

Hit this spot after a Tigers game. They do one thing and they do it well. And it feels like the place hasn't changed in 50 years - in a good way.

I'm visiting Detroit today. I was born here but I've been gone for many years. Loved Lafayette Coney island for over 80 years. Had a great lunch with friends.

The coney dogs are the best. The apple pie is even better. Stopped in after a concert and accidentally left a hoodie called the next day, and they had it on a freaking hanger waiting for it's owner.

The other most famous Coney spot in downtown Detroit!!! You decide which is better! I will say the chili has a bit more spice at Lafayette!

The greatest hot dog, literally the krusty krab of hot dogs for real. The sausage is really good and the skin has some bite to it. I also like that the chili has a lot of meat in it too.

AND they're open late so when you're hungover at 2 AM this place got your back

Every visit to Detroit includes a stop at Lafayette Coney Island – it's that good!

Nostalgia at its finest! Love everything about walking into Lafayette knowing I will soon be eating the best coneys. From the hustle and bustle sounds and views of the city, to the snap of the coney dog- nothing not to fall in love with. Service is always fantastic. The taste… oh the taste. THE BEST.

This place is the bomb. Great service. Great dogs. Great drinks. What more could a guy ask for.

One of the most famous hot dog in Detroit. We tried the hot dog and American specials, both taste very good. The sauce is very juicy and a little crispy. This restaurant is very popular but everything in order. Definitely try if you travel to Detroit

After eating an american, I had to go next door for the Lafayette Coney Island dog! So good!

What can one say about this place. It’s magical. It’s more then a restaurant , more then a business, it’s a museum, a shrine and a beacon of hope for the city of Detroit. I can’t even describe the cuisine using words… but I will try: A Lafayette Coney Island or Loose Burger tastes like sitting on your grandfather’s lap at Tiger Stadium watching the 84’ Tigers , Willie Hernandez , make one of his 32 saves. It tastes like Steve Yzerman raise the Stanley Cup over his head. You can taste glory, victory, love and pride. The kind of taste that could easily send a tear of joy running down your cheek.
