We were visiting Detroit for a union convention, and found this place. The building is really authentic, but could be more welcoming. I got the fried catfish with greens, Mac n cheese, and corn bread. The greens, fish, and cornbread SLAPPED. Coming from the south, I can tell you they were on point. The Mac and cheese was my least favorite. It was okay. The owner Steve was very nice. I would visit again if ever back in Detroit.

Steve's Soul Food has been around for years and I see why! I haven't had them in years as I don't frequent downtown often but my entire plate plus the peach cobbler was on point. If you're downtown and interested in soul food. I would recommend.

Wonderful ambience, employees and food. When I tell you every bite was delicious, every bite of food was delicious. After eating I wanted to compliment the chef. I will only repeat what Chef Mica said; "I cook with love."
Actual sentences uttered from my table:
HMM..HMM..HMM.
This is the best soul food I've had outside of family.
This is close to what grandma made.

The collard greens are the best I've had other than what my mom used to make. Outstanding. And love the smell and the vibe of the place.

As stated in another review, I was told about this restaurant by the rental car shuttle bus driver at DTW.

She was not wrong.

My wife and stopped by here on a cool, cloudy evening after visiting the Ford Museum. We were both very hungry. After having our GPS take us to this location we parked on the street and went inside. Our first impression involved the building itself, which was very beautiful and was built in the Art Deco manner. We found out later that the building itself was over 100 years old. Very impressive.

At this restaurant, the food is served up cafeteria style. You walk the line and a helpful employee tells you what is available on the line and describes dishes if you are not familiar with them. After listening to the menu choices I had BBQ chicken, collard greens and pinto beans. My wife had the rib tips, cabbage and corn. To be honest, I have never had that much food in a restaurant. And, to say that this was soul food would be a gross understatement. This was the absolute best soul food I've ever had. And, as I told Steve the owner, who happened to be there, those collard greens were second only to those of my Mother (rest her soul). That is the highest compliment I can give to any cook. The food was that good. The chicken was falling off the bone and was an entire half chicken. The beans were done just right and were also delicious. My wife ate just about everything on here plate too. We were both happy, to say the least. And despite all this food, we also had desert. I had the sweet potato pie and my wife had peach cobbler. Needless to say, we had to take the deserts back to our hotel for enjoyment at a later time. We were too stuffed to eat them.

If you ever happen to be in Detroit you are doing yourself a disservice if you do not eat here.

The building is beautiful, the decor attractive, the staff is awesome and the food is the best soul food I have ever had.

I would dine here again in a New York minute.

Thanks to Steve and his entire staff.

Your restaurant made our visit to Detroit extra special.

Very good food served in industrial quantities. They also have a very nice lounge and pool area.

I was an original customer of the Grandriver location years ago. They started out great then it went down hill over the years, I believe he was shut down. When I heard he had moved to Southfield and downtown I was upset thinking they couldn't keep good food in the neighborhood where they made a lot of our money, his dad owned meat market across the street. I went to the downtown location today and everything was great! I had BBQ chicken, mac & cheese and cabbage. I just wish he could have stayed in the neighborhood where it all started.

Food was great! Just in Detroit for the day and wanted to eat good food. My friend took me and my children to Steve's on a Sunday and we of course expected a line and a long wait. The wait existed but wasn't terrible. The truth is we could have waited twice as long and it still have been worth it. The food was great! The wings were a crunchy hit that could have used a little more seasoning during the cooking process but still were solid standard. The sides were all delicious. The absolute best part had to have been the fried fish though. It was the unilateral champion of dinner that night. The only thing truly lacking was the coconut cake, which was sad because all of the preceding eats were just delectable. The coconut cake was just sweet and lacking the depth of flavor that a true southern coconut cake would have been expected to come with. Maybe better/fresher coconut could have been the savior of this dessert. But alas they still garnered 5 stars with a strong side lineup and stellar mains all led by the perfected fried catfish.

This was the first time trying the food since they reopened. I was very disappointed in the meats we ordered the baked turkey leg was dry. The short rib was tough and the greens had a lot of stems. The dressing was ok.
