Lovely place to visit but must wrap up warm as the winds are strong on the coast and avoid getting too close because there's some sudden waves that can pull you in if not careful. Besides this a gorgeous stop and rather peaceful if you walk along the black sands away from the crowd- felt like walking on air. There's also huge basalt colums that have formed over hundreds of years that make quite a sight to see.

What can you say! A mesmerizing wonder. Black sand as far as you can see and the basalt columns are just magnificent.

The beach that was formed from a lava eruption 🌋. The water current is really strong and it is recommended not to turn your back. The waves are called sneaker waves for a reason.

As you enter the beach there is a warning ⚠ sign and lights indicating the danger levels of the waves🌊.

A must visit for Game of Thrones fans.

This was a highlight of our day. The black sand was gorgeous and not something we were used to seeing. The basalt columns were absolutely beautiful and a very cool thing to climb and see. And we saw puffins! So cool! It did get very crowded, but definitely worth the stop!

They call it black 'sand' but it's actually black because of very fine lava dust from very early eruptions (you can hear all about it at the Lava show, go see it!)
Nevertheless, thus, it is a very pretty sight and remarkable piece of nature.

Must see when in Iceland. Moreover, on of the most beautiful beaches on the world. Cold, windy, with sneaker-waves and spectacular stone formations. Great tribute to mother- nature. Be careful- at the parking entrance no information about payment for parking - you can do it online or in the machine on the wall of café.

An incredible black sand beach, complete with crashing waves and basalt rock formations. The basalt rocks were definitely the highlight, as there were columns, caves, and seastacks. Great place to enjoy the ocean scenery. Be alert of the waves.

I rarely use "must see" in my reviews, but Reynisfjara is that for sure.
It's located in the middle of the southern Iceland coast, almost at the most southern tip. You can easily reach it by paved road at which end is a paying big parking lot.
Have in mind it's one of the most tourist places on entire island so expect huge crowds.
The beach is just amazing, no wonder it's voted one of the worldwide top ten.
And, I say that after visiting it on the worst day we had in Iceland.
It was raining all day, clouds to ground with very strong winds putting black sand into our faces and clothes and roaring crushing big waves. But, that also left a deep impression of mother nature power. So, no matter how's the weather do come here and visit. Just follow the rules many others pointed out in terms of approaching the sea and dangerous sneaker waves.
I can only imagine (and see from pics of other travelers how it's on a sunny day).
Reynisfjara is one of reasons we'll be back in Iceland, hopefully in better weather

Really cool beach! We loved the black sand, rock formations, and how strong the waves were at night! We even had a sneaker wave get us, which was scary but a lot of fun. My husband was able to jump up on the rocks in time, but I got hit by it. There is a bar you can stop at for a bite to eat or drink. There is also parking. To our knowledge, it's free parking as we didn't see any signs for payment or pay stations. Granted, we went at night and could barely see any of the signs.

One of the most beautiful and scary beaches in Iceland! They have a warning sign for the dangerous waves so please be careful!

No trip to Iceland is complete without visiting Reynisfjara beach. The Black Sand Beach. At least for first-timers.
It's a very long stretch of sand. Black in colour because of the volcanic stone/soil. There are also amazing cliffs and stacks/rock formations in the sea.
On the east end you'll find the carpark, the visitor center and all the facilities. Parking comes with a fee, the beach is free to enter. Many folks just rush to the stacks, cliffs and cave. But take your time if possible. Take in the breathtaking scenery. Take a walk towards the west. As far as you like. You could actually walk all the way to the Dyrhólaey útsýnisstaður (the arch). We walked about 45min to the west. Just met two more visitors. It's peaceful and quiet. Most visitors won't walk away further than 3min. It's really too bad, since this is a major attraction and takes time to appreciate.
It really is amazing as people say. Something you need to see. Even though busy and popular it's a must-do. And people come and go quickly, so you will get some nice pics if you're patient. If you don't need a sunny, pic-perfect day, choose a cloudy/rainy one to meet even less visitors.

Astonishing view from the beach. One need to be cautious, and observe the light signals on the road before going to the beach, because could be dangerous.
It is a pity that a lot of tourists were ignoring the signs going too close to the sea.
Crowded but enjoyable.

What a beautiful beach! It was windy, and the sea was rough. Still, we had a good time. The basalt rock formations are really cool, and many people were climbing and posing on them.
Overall, a must visit even if it's just for a walk on this beautiful black sand beach.

P.S. this beach is about an hour away from Katla Ice Cave. My suggestion is to visit the cave, enjoy your lunch, and relax on the beach.

Pay for parking with an AP. Pay attention to the warning lights, as the ocean can sometimes get violent in a very quick time. They are called "sneaker waves". Otherwise, the rock rotations will have you having for hours, and look for puffins in the cliffs.

Worth the stop for the salt balasks (not many places to see such an amazing geological feature). Easy to drive to if you have a car and well worth it. Accessible in winter. Stay away from the water (sneaker waves). Could definitely hang out here for awhile and take an amazing beach walk. Cafe has delicious and reasonably priced sandwiches (1050KR). Not skimpy! Also free bathrooms. Nominal fee for parking.

Went 8/24/23. Stunning. Saw puffins. Went at 4pm and it was very very very crowded. Free parking and the restaurant at the entrance has bathrooms and free Wi-Fi. Best beach I have ever been to in my life.

Krypton is here! This place is beautiful with a fun story to go with it. An Icelandic version of the movie "Secrets of Roan Inish"

Fun to climb on. Unbelievable view. Though I'm not sure how people were in the water!

Great location in Southern Iceland. Be sure to walk around if you're photographing the sea stacks/Reynisdrangar. They've now removed some boulders so now you can more easily cross for a direct view. The view from up top on the cliffs is nice too. Note that it can get VERY windy here which can cause very large waves, so be careful. Crowds can be annoying at times but it is what it is. Pay attention to the high/low tides. People have died here and I've seen some almost get washed up by the waves. There's warning signs here for a reason.

Beach itself wasn’t special but the basalt column were really cool to see and come of the caves. Pay attention to the posted warnings. We went on a yellow warning but next day was red. Yellow lets you go to the cave, but on red you shouldn’t go on the beach.

Stunning black sand beach.
Very windy but the panorama is absolutely gorgeous.
Always pay attention for the silent waves and don’t get too close to the sea.

In case nature hasn't surprised you yet, I present to you the black beach. The photos do not have the black and white effect even if it seems that way. This beach is made of stones resulting from volcanic eruptions and that is the reason for the color, plus the gray day accompanies it in its entirety. Most days are like this here, the sun rarely comes out and it is only for a few hours of the day, now especially we are in winter.
