Wow! We got to do this as a big group last year and what an experience! The trip down into the volcano was breathtaking! We went in as a big group and hiked around for awhile and it was really cool seeing all of the different colors on the walls. Bring layers for the walk to the volcano(not on-site) but it was worth the walk! Wow!!

This was a wonderful experience! So glad that we decided to do this. It is a bit pricey, but it is a once in a lifetime experience. They rate the hike a 2 out of 5, but I think it's a bit more due to length and terrain. The guide and the ladies at the basecamp were all very knowledgeable and friendly.

Absolutely incredible experience. Inside the chamber is stunning. Take note that is is very wet inside so bring appropriate shoes. The staff is fantastic and friendly. The hike was a bit hard for me, but I’m 63 with bad knees.

The whole experience from the guides, the meal and refreshments was gracious, casual and enjoyable. The walk through the lava fields was done at a comfortable pace and the decent to the magma chamber was safe and secure. We loved the experience of seeing the inside of the volcano! Be prepared for walking in uneven/wet terrain (good boots are a must!) and don’t miss it!

It was an awesome experience! I clocked 27 minutes of actual free time to explore the chamber. I would have gladly paid more to stay a little longer. The soup afterwards was great but the serving size was a bit small.

After we got out of the chamber it was a bit of a free for all. The guide somewhat disappeared and we had to figure out on our own what to actually do get back to the shuttle. Expect to walk 45 minutes each way.

Is the $360 USD price tag justified? I’d say with maybe 35 minutes in the chamber (instead of my 27) and with a bigger soup (and some bread), then yes. 😬👍💯

This is an incredible and unique experience in Iceland. You hike about 2 miles to base camp and have coffee and hot chocolate before taking a lift about 400ft into the volcano. Our guide was awesome and said this is the only volcano you can descend down into. Awesome excursion and highly recommended.

Like no other place IN earth.
I admit I was skeptical of taking this tour and the cost is pretty hgh. We visited in late June, and the weather was predictably cold, windy and overcast with a chance of rain. It had rained buckets the previous day in Reykjavik, so I was prepared with my raincoat, gloves, warm hat and fleece jacket underneath.
What I Really liked: shuttle pickup from my hotel was on time and comfortable.
The guides were friendly, they cared for our safety and explained everything well before the descent.
The actual descent into the volcano wasn’t as scary as I expected. The harness we wore was an extra precaution, but overall the elevator was well engineered and seemed stable enough for the purpose.
Before you sign up, make sure you can hike along a rocky path for about 45 mins each way in the wind and possible rain.
Wear hiking boots at a minimum.
Walking around inside the magma chamber is tricky. Our guide took a nice group photo of my family before we left.
Overall this was a very expensive tour which was worth it to experience something unique and learn about the geology of the area. And the lamb stew was pretty tasty as well! I can’t really deduct any stars because the visit exceeded my expectations.

Inside the Volcano was everything I'd hoped it would be and more! We went with our 3 teenagers. We had some typical Icelandic summer weather, which was foggy, windy-ish, 40°F, with spitting rain. So we geared up. Hiking boots, wind-proof/
waterproof pants, windbreaker (layers). They supplied a big high-visibility raincoat for everyone too. There were lots of geological information plates on the walls for educational purposes. After we were sorted into smaller groups, we had a safety meeting, put on the raincoats and hiked about 2 miles up the volcano with information stops along the way. It took about 45 minutes. Once we hit base camp, we put on helmets and harnesses, had another safety talk, and then we crossed the bridge to the lift. The lift was easier than I thought. The operator was informative and kept us safe. Then we were able to explore the magma chamber, which was well lit and well marked. We loved it. We climbed the rocks, took pictures and videos and admired the geology. It was beautiful and fascinating. After about 35 minutes we went back up the lift and back to base camp
where we had hot drinks and soup. Then when the whole group had been fed we hiked
back down the volcano. We all enjoyed it and would highly recommend it! Petra and the rest of the guides took great care of us!

This is the starting point for the trip into the volcano. You can get there either by the shuttle bus from Reikjavik or by your car. Parking is no problem, there is a big parking place. For the trip, they lend you a raincoat, you can take some coffee or tea and you will have an intro meeting with the guide. We got Jonas - very nice guy.

You need to do the Inside the Volcano tour. It is one of the coolest things that you can do. The tour group is really professional.

The walk to the volcano is beautiful. It is so green. You'd see fissures in the ground. It made me so excited to go inside a dormant or extinct volcano. The hike is a descent one, but the tour went the pace of the group.

The volcano was awesome. We took an elevator down. We saw the different layers of the volcano.. The magma chamber had empited out. We explored huge boulders and other awesome formations. I had seen lava the year before, and this brought back great memories.

What an experience!!!! This was by far one of our favorite things we did in Iceland and is very unique! The cable ride down/up takes around 6 minutes. You get to spend around 30 minutes walking around the volcano. You are split into groups of 6, which helps it not feel crowded while at the bottom. The base camp area was nice and had toilets and they served us hot drinks and soup afterwards! The hike is around 2 miles each way and took around 45 minutes. It is not steep, but there are some uneven parts, especially in the volcano.

I was so impressed with this tour. The experience included safety equipment, a beautiful hike to and from the volcano, clean facilities, a great lunch, and the highlight of the trip - getting to go inside a volcano. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The volcano was incredible. This was a great once-in-a-lifetime experience that I highly recommend.

Coolest thing to do amongst all the cool things in Iceland. 40 min flat hike without any stress. Short climb to the base camp. Introduction and safety gears. Walk to the moving platform and down we went. This is for sure a once in a lifetime event. We will never forget. And thanks and big hug for our world-class guide KOLA! You made it super special for us! It is absolute amazing, what nature is showing to us…

This was a brutal and fantastic experience. As a non hiker I found the hike to be extremely challenging. First you get a safety briefing at the meeting point and they provide raincoats for the unpredictable Icelandic weather. Then you hike out as a group to base camp which is about 2 miles away. The trail goes through lava fields and is mainly gravel but there are lots of rocky bits and some steep inclines, particularly as you approach base camp. My legs were burning and I was gasping for air as I finally stumbled inside where they offered coffee, tea, and hot chocolate for us to take a breather. Then in groups of about 6 we geared up with helmets and harnesses and climbed another 5 minutes to the opening of the volcano. We hooked onto the elevator and rode down slowly for 7 minutes to the bottom of the volcano. We had about 30 minutes to explore the inside, which was a relatively small area and had a roped trail around the perimeter. We scrambled over rocks and got some amazing photos and learned a bit about the geology and history of the volcano from our guide before riding the elevator back up. In the base camp lodge we had more coffee and some traditional icelandic lamb soup to warm up and reenergize before the 45 minute hike back. It was a little more bearable going mostly downhill. We experienced just about every type of weather Iceland has to offer with rain, snow, wind, and sun throughout the whole hike. Come prepared with warm and waterproof gear and come prepared to push yourself and sweat but the views were incredible.
The road from Hafnarfjörður (417) is permanently closed so take 417 directly from the Ring Road (route 1) to get to the meeting point.

This was a great experience. Given the risk involved with everything, we felt very safe throughout the tour. One of a kind experience to go inside a volcano. It wasn't as cold as we expected (perhaps because there was no wind). Definitely dress warm, though.

Worth every penny! I had an amazing time and cannot wait to come back to Iceland. The views are incredible! The hike there was refreshing and the views were so amazing. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. I still can't get over the fact that I actually went into a volcano!

Incredible experience! It's a 3 km flat hike/walk out to base camp, where you get prepared for the descent. Then, it's another very short hike to the lift that takes you down into the dormant volcano. It's an amazing site! Guides are friendly and helpful. We did this whole thing in intense rain and wind, and still had fun!

It is a decently long walk to the volcano, but when you see the view it is well worth the walk. During our tour we got a nice warm beverage before the decent and a soup after wards to warm you for the walk back.

We did this trip last year. It was a lot of fun and they let me adventure down into the crags because I'm an idiot. Base camp lamp stew was amazing and getting to talk to the German couple was enlightening. It was a great experience overall, from the adventure to and from and inside the volcano, but also getting to meet new people from all over the globe.

Great experience. The staff was awesome. Check out the photos for my shared experience. Here’s how it goes. You walk the 2 miles to basecamp. The walk is moderate with rocks on the path, gravel, and steep inclines. Once at basecamp, you get coffee, hot chocolate, or tea. You then gear up and split up into small groups for the ride down. The ride is safe and ok for those fear of heights like I am. At the bottom you get to walk around in a loop on your own to photograph the beauty within. The loop around is rough to climb and not suited for those with mobility issues. Once back up, your group will walk back to basecamp for great vegetable lamb soup or vegetable soup. Once done, you’re free to walk back the 2 miles to your car on your own. It’s a great experience and we’ll worth the expense!! 5 stars!!
