Easy to find and such a neat geological formation to see. The walk is not long and parking is easy.

Iceland has such a treasure trove of fascinating sites that it would be easy to overlook this lesser known one, but I loved it. I have seen lots and lots of basalt columns, but this is the only place ever where the top parts of the columns were sheared off and polished by glaciers, leaving what looks just like a medieval church’s hexagonal tile floor.

It is easy to find and just takes a quick detour if you are driving east on 1. Turn northwest on Geirland/203 at Kirkjubaejarklauster and watch for the parking area on the left in a minute or so. A well-beaten path takes you past a mythical burial mound to the site in about 5 minutes.

The setting is magnificent, out in a pasture with cows grazing peacefully and mountains rising beyond.

It isn’t a large area, so don’t be surprised by that, but no worries; it’s awesome anyway.

The floor made of lava formation looks like a Church floor. Great stop over for a small walk. It can be covered with snow and invisible in winter. The landscape around is stunning.

Small little stop right off the road. It takes about five minutes to get to it from the parking lot. I enjoyed seeing a different view of the basalt columns. Also there were sheep in the field when we arrived!

Amazing site in a large grass field. It looks almost like man made, that's why it is so wonderful, takes about 20 minutes round trip from the parking lot. Like most of Iceland attractions, it's free. Very few visitors.

Take a short, pretty walk through a field of sheep and see some more columnar basalt from a different view. Great signage, nice to stretch your legs while touring the South coast for a few minutes

Short easy walk from the designated lot. Neat little geological formation that looks like a tile floor. A few minutes from the highway. Good place to check out when you're getting gas from N1.

Very nice place, but don't expect to see it in winter because it's covered by ice

The Kirkjugólf hexagonal basalt column formation is situated just a short walk east of the campingsite Kirkjubæjarklaustur II. While you are out walking, be sure to have the time for the trip up the hill, just behind the small farm with a small "forest" around it.

Up threre is a superb veiw over the plain and the farm land, and the beautiful lake Systravatn. Then, at the outlet of the lake, there is a steep path down along the beautiful waterfall.

Short walk (3 min?) with some great info about how the formation came to be. Worth the stop!
