Fort Saint-André Reviews

You can park the car down at the village and then walk up to the fort . It’s quite a steep walk but totally doable. The entrance in the yard of the fort is free but inside the building is not free. The view is worth the walk to the fort Saint Andre. I recommend.

12th-13th Century fort. Very well preserved.
Built to reassert the power of the King of France vs. the Pope of Avignon.
Was also used as a prison.

A magnificent place full of history. There is also an abbey and breathtaking gardens on the territory of the fort. If you buy a combined ticket, you can visit 5 places for 20 euros (incl abbey)

Just incredible. By the 5 monument pass for 20 euro. You won’t be disappointed. Pays for itself in 3 monuments. Gardens are incredible but going up into a medieval French fort was surreal and amazing

An impressive medieval fort with great views of Villeneuve and Avignon. The tour route is well organized, and detailed pamphlets are available in English. I visited in low season and had the entire fort to myself.

Well preserved fort with spectacular views of Avignon and the surrounding villages. We were surprised on how quiet it was in comparison with the Palais de Papes. The entrance fee is only 6€ for the fort, which is unbelievable value when you consider the views and the history lesson that it offers. If you have the whole day in the area you can buy a combo ticket for 20€ to see all the attractions in Villeneuve, including the church and the tower of Philippe Le Bel. The village itself is really charming, so it is highly recommended!

Our accommodation was a few km away from this port. We almost left the area and not visit it, until one day when we passed by it and decided to take a closer look. The entrance fee was very reasonable, and like most tourist attractions in France, the entrance is free for children (0-18 yrs). The tour was short (45min). We loved the view and the art exhibition. We found out interesting things about the rivalry between two important political powers holders. It is worth your time. If you come by car, there is parking close by. As you leave the fort, you’ll be able to take a nice stroll into the small town of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. It is a very nice little town, with coffee shops, narrow streets and nicely dressed people:)

Stunning views of the surrounding countryside across to the Palais des Papes in Avignon. The fort is situated in Villeneuve Lez Avignon. It's an ancient fort built in the 14th century. The history is very interesting and it's well worth visiting.

If you’re thinking of visiting Avignon make time also to walk across the bridge over the Rhone to historic Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and Fort Saint-Andre which can be seen clearly up on the hill. I did so in August this year and was glad to have seen the 14th century fortress and spectacular views from the top. Expect a moderate climb. A ticket into the fort cost around 6 euros. Well worth it.

Stunning. Suggestion would be to park in town away from Fort Saint-André so you can enjoy the village on the way up and back down.

Fort Saint-Andre is a 1300's era fort (castle) on the hill in Villanueve, right next to Avignon. The fort is fairly simple, there are few placards nor employees to guide you, but the views are amazing and there is something nice about getting say from the crowds and just experiencing the building and grounds themselves without a choreographed visit. In addition to the fort, there are gardens at the Abby (inside the fort, but separate admission). The fort is 6 euros and I believe the gardens are 7 (2018 prices). The downside for some is that the fort is not very friendly for anyone disabled; no elevators, lots of stairs, and unpaved pathways. When you visit, be sure to head to the little city of Villanove, it's very pretty with lots of little shops and cafes. Far less crowded than Avignon! How this review has helped you!

We visited in May 2018. Cost of entering Fort St. Andre was 6 euros. The garden (separate) was 7 euros which we did not visit. Very glad we visited this site. Apparently, it was built to assert power of the Holy Roman Empire and to make the empire's presence known to the Avignon papacy (i.e., to keep an eye on the competing religious authority). Beautiful view of Avignon itself and the Pont d'Avignon. Ramparts the surround the fort are especially impressive. Worth the trip. You can walk there in 45ish minutes from Avignon which includes a walk through the lovely village below.

We walked all the way from Avignon to visit this place and it was totally worth it. It is located on a hill and you can see from the distance. The entrance is 8 euro and you can visit the interior gardens which are very beautiful in a provençal way, with the cigales singing loudly in a very old olive garden. There is a pretty little chapel where we hid from the sun for a minute, then we continued with the terraces where you have a panoramic view over Avignon and the mountains. Not many tourists around, which makes it even better 💚 at the ticket shop they sell a lovely selection of wines

The walk up to the fortress is very relaxing. The fortress itself is in perfect state and truly awesome. Just a pity we got there when it was closed for visits but on the other hand, we had a great night view.

Very cool place. I suggest you to walk from the Palais des Papes and visit Tour Phillipe-le-Bel, and then make your way to For Saint-André. It will make a for very educational and active day!
Fort Saint-André was worth the ticket. I visited in December so the abbey was closed. I learned a lot about the history of this region and how castles like these function/serve their purpose. The fort also offers fantastic views all around!
Catch the bus line number 5 from Tour Philipe-le-Bel to take you back to the city center.

Only 6€ and a fabulous opportunity to wander through the towers and over the ramparts. Lots of arrowloop photo opportunities and murder holes to stare down. Brilliant views from the ramparts and towers. A great alternative to more crowded venues in Avignon.
