Shame this church is no longer used but it is a lovely building built from stone taken from the Wroxeter Roman city . It has some extremely old tombs inside and really is a beautiful building with two gorgeous stained glass windows

The Church of St Andrew in Wroxeter has a long and colourful history. The church stands within the area originally occupied by Viriconium, the fourth largest Roman city in Britain. After the Romans left Britain in the 5th century, the local tribal communities return and the much of the Roman buildings were used as a source of materials. It may be that the earliest church on the site coexisited with the declining Roman city.
The church was mentioned in the Domesday Book from 1086 and then greatly extended in the 12th century after it was acquired by Haughmond Abbey, using large stones looted from the remains of Viriconium. The tower was built in the 15th century and features carvings thought to have come from Haughmond Abbey after the Dissolution in 1536.
Repairs and additions occured in the 18th and 19th centuries. The rebuilding of the south wall incorporated segments of the 9th century Saxon cross that once in the church yard, these can be seen just below the eaves.
The interior is impressive but rather austere. The walls are plain but feature dark hatchments and the remains of an 18th century reredos. The box pews and pulpit are Jacobean and within the chancel are three tomb chests. These chests, the graves of powerful and wealthy from the 15th and 16th centuries, feature effigies of the deceased and two of them retain their original colours.
Like much of the fabric of the church, the monolithic font is also from Viriconium, thought to be the base of a column and it is far larger than almost any other I have seen.

Excellent building away from the madding crowd. Worth walking down to if visiting the Roman ruins in Wroxeter or the vineyard.

Brilliant beautiful place to spend an hour in the past. Beautifully kept by volunteers and a great example of real England. Rod Hardman

Wroxeter was once the largest roman Towns in England. St Andrews Church Is made up of a large amount of roman stone and indeed the font is made from a roman pillar. Inside there are a number of interesting tombs and a wonderful william Morris window. The church is in the care of the church conservation trust , parking is on the road and there is ruins of the roman town a short way down the road. This wasn't open on the day I was there and is looked after by English heritage. The ruins are however viewable from the road.
