Oakenshaw Nature Reserve

Perfect little walk to hear the birds chirping, ducks quacking , frogs ribiting and dragon flies buzzing. If you lucky enough some deers too.

A hidden gem in Oakenshaw. We have been a couple of times and we always find some new routes to explore. Kids and dogs both enjoy it.

Great little hidden gem. Not a long walk around but lots of wildlife.

Very nice small reserve with good access and well maintained path. Lots of meadow flowers and butterflies. Nice if stagnant ponds. Only downside was being chased through the reserve by horseflies who were very hungry!

Visiting relatives. But its a beautiful village. The pond and wildlife area are particularly gorgeous. Great place to walk with children and dogs.

Wildlife Reserve on a former Banks opencast coal mine. Officially opened in 1996 by former PM Tony Blair. The site has now (2018) matured into a very pleasant site for walking, bird watching and chilling out. The ponds at the middle of the site are surrounded by mixed woodland. There is an extensive network of footpaths some of which are paved in compacted gravel and suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Parking is limited either in the village of Oakenshaw or there is space for 4/5 cars just off Stockley Lane which is the main access for the main tracks.

Lovely place to walk dogs, lots of very friendly owners, except the man and his wife with the brown and white spaniel who admitted that their dog is aggressive to other dogs and likely to bite, yet will not put their dog on a lead around other dogs.

Wonderful view of the ponds, many trails to walk along. Very beautiful with all the wildlife especially around July

Lovely spot for a walk. The wooded areas are nice and peaceful. Perfect when you need to relax.
