Purchased a Rega Planar 3 50th Anniversary Edition Turntable, Rega Brio Amp & Sonus Faber Lumina 1 Speakers.
After much contemplation on upgrading my system I found John's advice, expertise and overall attention to thorough customer service throughout my decision-making process a pleasant and enjoyable experience. From our initial appointment and discussion, at The Department of Music's stunning rural location on the various equipment options, to the delivery of my order John's communication and attention to detail was thoroughly professional. As such I thank John for his excellent support and would without hesitation highly recommend The Department of Music.

Purchased a Hegel H390 amp from The Department Of Music.
John, made the experience very easy with constant communication regarding delivery and he was also interested in my set up - which was nice. John also gave me some suggestions when asked on speaker cables. All together, a very professional and friendly service. if l have any further upgrades in the future l will be in John's ear.

I have had the pleasure of dealing with John - Founder & Owner - over the last few weeks on an upgrade to my current system. After a lot of extensive listening at John's facility and at my home I decided the upgrade sonically was not what I was looking for. I cannot fault the patience and understanding John has shown me personally through this process. His approach is one I warm to. He is someone I will go back to in an instant as I tread the path of future upgrades. Anyone looking at his stable of brands for their next hifi purchase will be in very good hands with John Gorodecky. He has good products which helps, but he supplements this with a personal approach and a set of values that sings as clearly and coherently as the audio products he sells. It is a powerful and rare combination.

John has a wealth of knowledge in respect of listening and enjoying music . To add to that he is a very nice guy ( the two don't always go together ! ) and at the end of the day the man can brew a proper cup of tea !

Excellent service. Had a good chat over a coffee and listened to some records to help me make up my mind on a new turntable setup.

Ordered on the day (22 Dec) and it arrived before Christmas.

A* all round.

We had a very relaxing, magical musical experience. John gave expert advice, support and time. The time given enabled us to get our listening ears on to choose our new amp and streamer. The location is in a beautiful setting the coffee is also excellent. John spent time installing our new system in our home, we now have an amazing quality system thanks to John’s expertise. The system is used daily very loud!

Thanks very much John

I recently contacted John to discuss upgrading my speakers. After a few salient questions from John, he suggested perhaps other parts of my system might be a better place to start. Long story short, I ended up replacing my CD player with a Rega Saturn Mk3 which immediately showed a noticeable and pleasurable improvement. On the strength of this (and with John's careful guidance) I also decided to upgrade my amp to a Hegel H390. Both new units have been matched to my existing Dynaudio Contour 1.3 speakers. End result? A hugely improved and immediately enjoyable system and one very happy and satisfied customer.

John has a very relaxed and reassuring manner and has never been pushy. He has allowed me to spend a considerable amount of time with him, trialling various combinations of equipment in his studio, including taking along my original kit (Marantz CD player and Arcam A39 FMJ amp) to run alongside possible alternative options. I have found John and the service he provides to be above and beyond what one would typically expect and would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending him to anyone who has an interest in audio equipment and who may be looking to improve (or create) their own quality system. The whole process from start to end has been a joy - through this review I extend my heartfelt thanks to John and wish him every success for the future. 😎 🥕

John was incredibly friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and really took his time advising me on the right turntable for my needs - since searching and contacting other retailers from November, even before I was ready to pull the trigger!

He also offered me a very good deal without any sense of feeling pressured. I ended up needing a replacement due to manufacturer defects and he acted very quickly, even dropping the new turntable off to me to save me another trip.

The department of music itself is in a stunning location and I can’t wait to visit once lockdown has lifted!

All the best - Darren / Rega P6 + Ania Pro + Fono MC

Having not bought any hi-fi for over 25 years (possibly 30) I needed an expert to help me update my system. John listened carefully to where, how and by whom the system would be used. I was then allowed to spend pretty much a whole day at the Department of Music listening to some of my albums and CDs through a variety of permutations of separates selected by John. They all sounded good but I eventually settled on what I thought was the best sounding combination. John even plugged in my own old but trusty Rega turntable to hear how it sounded through the new amp and speakers. I definitely spent longer choosing my new hi-fi than I did my last house or car which, if you love music, is surely only right and proper?!
John then delivered and installed my new system. It looks and, more importantly, sounds incredible. I am sure it will give me just as much listening pleasure as my last system. I think the service John offers is pretty much unique and I won't hesitate to recommend the Department of Music to anyone wanting good advice, competitive prices and an enjoyable shopping experience.

Have been after upgrading my turntable for a number of months. I knew what I wanted but not where to buy it from as the turntable in question is not and not allowed by the manufacturer to be discounted.
Checked on Dealers and came across this place out in the wilds of West Sussex. Contacted John and told him what I wanted to which a curve ball came out off nowhere. An demo model with fitted cartridge. He made me an offer I couldn’t refuse and within a couple of hours I was on his doorstep salivating in anticipation. What a lovely place to spend money and blimey does John know his stuff. Spent a wonderful hour or so chatting and putting the world to rights. This is the way to shop and cannot recommend highly enough if you are after hi fi equipment of quality and a truly enjoyable experience then make an appointment to go and see John (take your wallet) it’ll be worth it.
My one complaint is having Sonus Faber speakers on display
I have a feeling I will return soon
As a footnote the turntable is superb and way above my expectations

Was recommended to John at TDOM by a couple of friends who I look up to when we talk Hi-Fi. Had a phone chat with John & we talked about what I was after in a hi-fi, what I currently had & what was my budget. After about 15 mins we decided that I should bring my turntable & about 5-6 albums along to listen. First of all, you think you’re on a wild goose chase as the stables are really in the middle of nowhere, which is a good thing, can’t beat the Sussex downs! John is very welcoming & has a great sense of humour. We talked bands & albums, & then it was time to listen! He tried to simulate the speakers I had at home as well as impress me by showing me how my own turntable can sound with a good(no…great) amp. He set up 2 amps Rega & Naim, then left me alone to enjoy. Popping in now & again to top up my coffee cup & share the experience. I was really impressed at how my Project turntable sounded with the Naim. I was prepared to be told I’d need to upgrade the whole system, but John convinced me that by upgrading one thing at a time and enjoying it, is a better way to appreciate & understand your hi-fi. I came away spending a little more than intended, but have no regrets. I’m at home listening to familiar albums with new ears.
The Naim Supernait3 fits perfectly with my system.
Thanks John

This was a whole new way of buying top quality hifi equipment. It started with a series of very helpful phone calls about what I wanted to buy and the rest of my system. I ended up going to the D of M site - it is quite a journey. It is definitely worth taking your time to get there it is a fabulous site. On arrival I was greeted with some excellent coffee. We talked at length about what I wanted and spent the morning listening to three excellent pairs of speakers. I had plenty of time, and no pressure, or sales chat, just informative conversation. It is a splendid venue with beautiful views and well set up listening rooms. Overall it was an excellent experience and I am very happy with my purchase. If you have, or need, the time, and like the countryside, I highly recommend you give D of M a try.

We had the very best advice from John for our sound system which is fabulous and we enjoy daily. He made it so easy and came to install it in our own home which was great! I can not too highly recommend John at the Sound Of Music; he listens to what your needs are and stays within budget.

Wow, what a place! Nestled in the beautiful South Downs, The Department of Music is a fantastic place to visit and listen to music on amazing equipment in stunning surroundings.

John lets you bring your own music to listen to and then puts together a variety of quality speakers, amps, turntables etc whilst you sit on the sofa and take in the awesome quality sound. I went there looking for a new Rega turntable and left purchasing the one up from the one I wanted as it sounded better and I just couldn't resist. John knows his stuff and puts the customer first without any over-the-top sales push. It's great to speak to someone who clearly loves his music and loves the experience of listening to music. The range of equipment he has is breath-taking to be honest. If only I had a bigger house!

Superb experience, fantastic customer service and speedy delivery. You won't get this experience online. Book yourself a visit. Thanks John. I'll be back.

Fantastic experience shopping at The Department of Music. John is personable and advises honestly which was just what I needed when upgrading my record player. Totally happy with my purchase and he went above and beyond to make sure that I had the right setup to connect the turntable to my existing speakers. We will definitely be returning when we need our next upgrade!

I highly recommend The Department of Music to anybody looking to buy new hifi equipment, or upgrade their current system. John is a joy to spend time with and his business is located in a beautiful rural environment, with relaxing and comfortable listening rooms built into an old stable. I had a wonderful experience there, spending several hours in John's company trying out all sorts of equipment, learning about the world of streaming music, and getting great advice on how to upgrade and add to my current system. John's level of service is second to none, helping me decide on equipment within my budget that met my desire for high quality sound.

Rarely do you find a high end audio dealer with such a diligent focus on customer experience. John is a delight to engage with; he takes the time to listen and understand your needs, accepts your reservations and adapts accordingly.
I have been very impressed by the way he managed my expectations, going to great lengths to put a system together that I wanted to buy. This even involved sourcing two entirely different systems comprising components he did not usually carry.
I cannot recommend John highly enough for anyone who wants to buy a high end audio system and who values customer service.

Excellent service from John. Needed hard to find piece of equipment and John was able to source one for me in good time. John provided useful information about the product and its optimal use. Communication was easy via phone and email. The system itself is excellent and I have been listening to all my old music with renewed enjoyment. Would highly recommend the Department of Music for anyone looking for top quality sound systems from a knowledgeable seller.

What a wonderful experience. John is a very personable and knowledgeable guy who could not have been more helpful. As a long time Naim user (30 years) it was pretty clear that I would walk away with a Naim purchase, but the enthusiasm that John showed in setting up various comparisons: one box vs two box, CD versus streaming, good cables vs even better cables, made it an exciting and satisfying experience. The Department of Music is in a lovely rural spot and the demo room could not have been better. So I shall be back, definitely for advice and possibly to buy some more.
