Kalchuri: a dynasty that we hardly have ever heard of. This dynasty was ruling over the territories of central India with their capital at Tripuri (present day near Jabalpur) between 7th -13th century AD.

They have a style similar to Chandelas & Parmaras where they built Nagara style temples in Amarkantak. One of the most unique things was the common jagat (plinth) and mandapa (hall) for 2 garbgriha (shrine).

The place also has a kund which is believed to be built by Adi Shankaracharya during 7th Century for the original place of Narmada udagam (origin/fount).

It's a very well managed ASI site that can be visited by paying a ticket offline or online at the site.

The only old structures in the ancient pilgrimage of Amarkantak are the Ancient Temples of the Kalachuri Period, located bang opposite the Narmada Udgam Temple complex. The temples were built by the Kalachuri kings, who ruled central India during the 10 – 12 th century.
According to legend Shankaracharya built the Surya Kunda in Amarkantak, in 8th century AD, to specify the origin of Narmada. It is also said that Shankara installed the idol of lord Shiva in Pateleshwar Temple, strangely the Pateleshwar temple was built much later during the reign of Kalachuri King Karnadeva (1041 – 1073).
The temple complex located next to the ancient man made water body has several structures belonging to the Nagara style of architecture. The Pateleshwar Temple is crowned with a pancharath sikhara and has a pyramidal mandap. The Karna Temple, the largest and the most prominent temple in the Kalachuri Temple complex, is crowned with a towering ornate sikhara. The complex also contains several other temples including the Johila Temple, Vishnu Temple and Shiva Temple. Another interesting structure in the Kalachuri Temple complex is the Pancha Math Temple. A series of five small temples, of different architectural style, located on a single raised platform.
Today the Kalachuri Temple complex is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the complex is very well maintained with manicured lawns and landscape gardening.
Timings: 8 AM - 5 PM
Entry: Rs. 25 for Person

Overall and average place for spending excess time in Amarkantak. All temples inside are locked. But you can really enjoy the beauty of the place surrounding a lush green landscape and trees.
Taking a professional photographer or camera is not allowed. Visit here during evening or in early morning for best experience. Information on milestones are very peculiar thing.

These Ancient temples are well protected and neatly maintained. One great observation is the natural air conditioning once you enter inside a temple. No matter how hot it is outside, you dont need anything else

Very beautiful... And very well preserved. But the area outside was dirty... The banks of holy Narmada river just outside the premise which is beside this archeological site had plastics and guthka packets all over the place but the administration does not take it seriously they need to work hard to keep the place clean and people just need more education on how not to ruin a place of worship and a tourist spot.

It's under construction right now. Very popular and near to annuppur. And , it is completely meticulously hand craved. It's a Buddha temple. A very huge statue of Buddha is there which is still there from the old version of the same temple.
