Asia's first butterfly safari park at Thenmala
Thenmala, the first eco-tourism project in India, has hosted another first-of-the-kind attraction with Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Minister for Tourism inaugurating Asia?s first butterfly safari park here on February 22. The artificially created 3.5 hectare park is designed by the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI).

125 species of butterflies have already been sighted in the park. To boost the feeding and breeding of the butterflies, microhabitats with special shrubs and trees have been formed. The park has roosting plants and host plants that provide the right leafy meal to caterpillar species and plants with leaves which butterflies depend on for their alkaloid requirements.

Special water sprinklers and artificial ponds have also been included in the park. Visitors to the park can watch the various life cycles of many rare and endemic butterflies like ?Autumn leaf butterfly?.

The safari park is based in Thenmala, an ecotourism center located in the Kollam district and about 66km away from Kollam city, a big tourist hub. The nearest airport is in Trivandrum, a scenic 72km drive away. Getting here from any other city is easy too as the place is well connected to the highways and rail. There is no best time to visit the park as butterflies can be seen throughout the year. However, the monsoon months are best avoided as its not much fun getting soaked.

A very nice place to go for a walk and see different species of butterflies. Tickets can be obtained from the entrance. You can enjoy the greenery and sounds of nature. There are different statues of the butterfly lifecycle which is a treat to see. There is also a kids park and clean public toilets. There is a nice gazebo where you can eat your breakfast if you have packed it for the road. Beware of monkeys though. Try to reach as early as 9am as the crowds will be less and you can get the park all to yourself. There is also a musical fountain show if you happen to stay towards the evening. I thoroughly enjoyed the morning walk and it is especially delightful for photographers to get some good pictures. Highly recommended!
