Durham County Library - Southwest Regional Library

My child grew up here at this wonderful library. We had great memories here. Shout out to a staff member Margaret - not sure if she’s still there, but she used to run the kids event etc. I was once standing with my baby daughter at the library car park, and she pulled over and asked if we needed a ride anywhere - not many people do that nowadays, and I was a bit speechless afterwards. I couldn’t thank her then (it was years ago) but just thought I’d post it here.

The library itself is beautiful - I loved the Durham county library as a whole and all staff members were kind (including the security guards).

I hadn't been to a library in many years. A very nice man helped me get a new library card. I easily found two books. Self checkout is easy. Clean restrooms.

The Durham Libraries are wonderful. They are safe, clean places to go to classes, read, and use computers.

This is our go-to library in Durham. Not so big that it's overwhelming, but large enough to have a great selection of books as well as meeting and computer rooms. The children's area is on the left as you enter and is really nice. A few more comfy chairs spread throughout for reading would be a wonderful addition.

Beautiful library and plenty of books to choose from. The staff there are kind and extremely helpful. I must say however that some of those security guards need to either relax or come to terms with their minimal station of authority. Aside from that this is a great place to study, read, and check out books.

This library is absolutely fantastic for young children. There is a great selection of board books and picture books and a sizeable selection in Spanish as well. The storytime/songs classes for children and babies we have attended there have been run by the kindest, most engaging leaders. At Halloween of 2022 they did the entire multipurpose room up as a (gently) spooky maze that families could explore with a flashlight and it rivaled ticketed attractions that I have attended for kids.There are always fresh crayons, coloring papers and puzzles strategically placed by the checkout station for little impatient ones to entertain themselves as their caregivers scan their items to borrow. And recently we discovered bundles of books with high-interest topics assembled together for you to take without having to browse. We got two wonderful books about trains that my toddler adored and I never would have found them by myself while chasing him around.

In my opinion, this particular branch is the best of all located in Durham. Unlike the other library branches that I have visited within the city, the Southwest Regional branch has a dedicated area where visitors can eat their lunches without having to exist the building. The library staff is tremendous, always polite, (many saying "hello" in a friendly manner as I have in through the door on many occasions) and quite knowledgeable. I have found that this branch is also the quietest of all that I have visited, despite the fact that they run many programs in the morning for pre-school kids. The library is also kept quite clean coming from the maintenance staff. Finally their list of books, periodicals, etc is quite large; containing materials for everyone.

I had gotten off from work and needed to print some VERY important stuff for an amazing career opportunity. I arrived 20 minutes before closing. I don't have a library card (at least I didn't think I had one) and was told I needed one to operate the computer. The nice receptionist processed my ID (which I forgot in my car...and to mention earlier) that I had to waste more of their time getting. Unfortunately, everything was closing, including the computers. The library was going to be closed until Monday which is when I needed to have my documents ready. While I'm on the verge of freaking out, they tell me I can email my documents to them and they can print it out that way. I do it with 7 minutes to spare. The receptionist went above and beyond to help me out and now I will be ready for my new job!!!

I take my kids here every Thursday and they love it. It's the perfect place for them to unwind after a long school day. I love how peaceful and quiet it is. I also like that you can check out books from this library and return them to any other Durham library. Makes it very convenient.

A wonderful public resource in a great setting. The staff here is efficient, helpful, and make you feel welcome. Being able to bring my son to morning children activities free of charge has been a blessing. Thanks for making my life easier and being a great part of our community.

Amazing library - excellent service, selection, and staff! Durham truly has a great library system, but this one is especially good.

This is an amazing library! Very peaceful, comfortable space; I can always find something interesting to read/distract me from my work, hehe; and the staff are very kind and friendly.

Beautiful facility and friendly, helpful staff. One of the study rooms looks out onto a wooded area.
They also have fantastic programs, from a talk on Rumi to poetry groups. It's a great place to be.

It is a wonderful public library that functions as a No Fee Library. A true resource and asset to all Durham residents.

I love the Southwest Durham County library for the great location on Shannon Road, the study rooms that one can reserve, the helpfulness of the librarians, and all the books, periodicals, technology, and research material. I also love Interlibrary loans, and most especially, NCLive.

Great library. Activities for little kids and wide selection. Books are arranged so little kids can easily pick out books without making a big mess.

I find that this branch is very accommodating and the book selection is excellent. The use of the meeting rooms help with my community empowerment programs. I love this place!

Great Library, I admit that I was confused with the decision to open with the hours that they chose. The covid strategy was, in my opinion not well thought out by their administration, but I am so impressed with the entire staff that I just went with it.
