One of my friends hosts a monthly "full moon hike" at Horton Grove. With him leading, we generally traverse 3-6 miles of trails at night with minimal artificial light. Trails are well marked and fairly even, easy for even a 70yo to navigate in the dark when being led by experienced hikers.

Love this place. In a small area several different ecosystems, ie, separate hard wood and pine groves. Many types of flowers. Dwarf irises in early April.

I run all the TLC preserves, the MST and FLT along the Eno and Falls Lake, Umstead, Little River, Ellerbee and the ATT: Horton Grove is my favorite for a short 6 or 7 mile run. The trails are well groomed, no rocky or rooty sections, well shaded and wonderfully scenic in all seasons. Never crowded and often virtually empty on week days. Run the outer perimeter counter clockwise from the Great Barn, adding the Sowell Trail out around the pond. Always delightful.

Great walking/hiking area. Beautiful, well maintained trails; plenty of markers and maps. I used “AllTrails” to monitor every step; I walked with my grandson and we had a great time!

So peaceful and relaxing. I saw two blue birds in the meadow and a young fawn leaping through the forest.

Absolutely gorgeous. Not only a nature preserve filled with trails, but the history of the Horton Grove land is very important in this area. All around the preserve are houses that were a part of the Stagville Planation, one of the largest in North Carolina. Once you finish walking the trails, stop up by the big white house at the entrance and read about some of the occupants of the land. Highly recommend the preserve for nature and history fans.

It was nice. I went there on a motorcycle and depending how you enter it's either 1 mile or.5 mile down a gravel road. So just a word of caution if you aren't going by car truck or SUV. It's a nice gravel road. But still... Lots of loop trails. Everything I walked on was very easy and flat. Glad I stopped by because this was pretty far east of where I live. It just happened to fall in the middle of a motorcycle ride I was on. Photo of map attached.

Definitely worth a drive from the triangle to explore this broad range of hiking trails. Some of the trails are short but if you put them together you could spend an entire morning or afternoon exploring.

I love being able to hike and explore places of historical significance. This place is so neat. There are several trails throughout the reserve that used to belong to Historic Stagville. Each trail is named after an enslaved family that lived on the plantation and kiosks through the reserve tell you about the families and wildlife within the reserve. The trails are well marked and maintained and you have the option to combine many of them to extend the hike if you wish. The terrain is pretty flat throughout so it would be a nice excursion for the whole family.

This is a nice preserve with a bunch of trails. Our club uses it for orienteering events, so we go off trail. Even though it's relatively small for orienteering, the courses can be challenging.

Another homerun by TLC! Nice, out of the way trail access with ample parking, easy trails, and great nature viewing/bathing.

The parking area is right at the big field. They burn it regularly and encourage plants that local flora and fauna like, such as milkweed for the monarchs. On a warm late afternoon you can see all kinds of bugs and birds and critters. Nice observation deck in the middle of the field.

A few miles of trails circumnavigate the land, allowing a not too technical 5K run, or relatively easy walking. Trails get a little squishy down near the creeks when its rained recently, but not that bad. Highly recommended.

Perfect place for family photos. And with all the leaves changing right now, it is so beautiful.

Maxing hidden gem. A lot of the trails are muddy and sloppy currently but it will s a delightful hiking area.

A series of Pleasant trails with small educational plaques. A series of loops most 1-2 miles long. You could do them one at a time for a short trip or multiple ones to get a whole days hike in. We like this little getaway that is close to Durham, but far enough away to be quiet and natural. Very close to the Stagville Historical Plantation.

Nice trails with plenty of options. Little parking lots but it isn't very busy. Good option for a quick hike.
