Great selection of pastries, sandwiches, and more with friendly people and a window view into where they bake the bread. You can take brownie and cookie selection packs home as well as bread and they also teach classes next door. Good drop coffee too and a cute little spot outside where you can eat under umbrellas and use the wifi.

If you want a quality baker who will go above and beyond for you, consider Zingerman's. Our wedding was last weekend, and they made the most beautiful wedding cake for our event. They were friendly, and quick to answer questions and concerns. I would recommend them to anyone who needs a wedding cake or other custom baked goods.

Update 2: Since my last update I've shopped the Bakehouse 4 times. The truth is, the bread is so much better than anything else you can buy locally. My original post and ratings were based more on my expectation of a particular Zingerman's experience, rather than on the actual experience. If I compare the Bakehouse to most other businesses, I must give it 5 stars.

Update: After the owner's response regarding tipping, I've adjusted my rating from 2 to 4 stars. ALL of the food deserves 5 stars. If you're only there because of the food, there's no need to read any further. The two biggest service factors for me are how long I have to wait and whether you have what I stopped in for. I don't mind waiting if the place is busy and all registers are occupied, but it's worse when things are a bit slower and all but one register is open and I'm standing there for a couple of minutes watching multiple employees walk by doing other things. If you run out of Pecan-Raisin, no problem, it's a specialty bread and you don't want to get stuck with 20 loaves at the end of the day. If you run out of baguettes or Rustic Italian, I find that much more annoying because those are staples. Both of these things have happened to me several times in the past few months.

TIPS now "accepted"
I've shopped the Bakehouse dozens of times. The bread is just that good. Service has always been spotty due to the high turnover of counter employees, I've been treated very well and with incredible indifference. But again, the bread is so good. The prices are premium, and Zingerman's has made it clear over the years that high quality ingredients and paying employees a living wage is more expensive than supermarket bread, fair enough. So, imagine my surprise when I stopped in to get a couple of baguettes and then was greeted on the credit card machine with an opportunity to tip the well-paid employee on top of the higher product cost for reaching behind them and bagging a couple of baguettes.

I tipped the employee that time because he stood there looking at me, even though I didn't believe it was warranted. However, I have thought a lot about that extra penalty for shopping at the Bakehouse, and I'm going to be thinking about it before I stop in again.

I don't want to give the Bakehouse a poor review. It's clear that everyone involved is trying to provide a quality product. But asking for tips for a simple retail transaction is exceptionally short-sighted and completely unnecessary.

Great local bakery in Ann Arbor! Nice to get your bread and treats for a weekend visit. The bread is amazing. The pies are delicious too. Great stop!

The staff is friendly and welcoming every time; they go out of their way to be helpful. The place is always packed with customers buying Zingerman’s bread or desserts. There’s a window into the bakehouse where customers can watch Zingerman’s family-owned operation.

Received a gift box from a friend and it had San Francisco sourdough bread, coffee cake and cookies. Loved the sourdough and coffee cake a lot.

We came here in the evening (around 4pm) and were pleasantly surprised by the amount of bread options still available. While they likely had more options in the morning, the pastry cases still had items to pick from. We loved the quality flavor of the muffins and cupcakes. The staff are attentive and very pleasant, evidently treated well at the shops. The bake house has fantastic whole cakes and individual pastry options.

The food was amazing. Super fast service. Our server Alex was very helpful and friendly. I had the Beet and goat cheese salad with Mac n cheese and cheesy grits. All were sooooo good. Dinner companion had the Redfish, said it was also delicious.

It was a little difficult to find as it's located in a warehouse district and my GPS seem to be very confused! Finally found it and they have a very wide selection of freshly baked treats. I ordered a few scones, a loaf of freshly baked bread and a delicious small hot cocoa cake. When I finally got home with the chocolate cake, I wished I'd had some creamy vanilla ice cream to enjoy with it. Got to go to the local H-E-B and get some! Loved everything I tasted and look forward to a return trip to try additional items when I return to Ann Arbor!

Our wedding cake from Zingermans was absolutely gorgeous and delicious! We had such a great experience with them and appreciated how kind and helpful everyone was. They made the cake look even better than I described! We look forward to ordering more cakes from them in the future.

An iconic brand in Ann Arbor. My wife sampled a few items for our trip back to PA and I just had the cupcakes a moment ago. Oh my, I can tell you that the cupcakes I just had are the best I’ve had since came to US 11 years ago. We’ve had countless cupcakes from indie shops, Whole Foods, Wegman’s, you name it. No other cupcakes ever came close to how wonderful and balanced the cupcakes from Zingerman’s tasted. They just felt right and not artificial at all. If you are like me who finds things in the US are either too sweet or salty, Zingerman’s should be the right place for you.

The baked goods are very expensive, but incredibly delicious. Located in a nondescript industrial office park, Zingerman’s is chocolate heaven for chocoholics. The hot cocoa cake tastes as mouthwatering as the name implies and the babka bread (with dark chocolate chunks, golden raisins, and cinnamon) provides such a unique treat that has my family and I clamoring for more. The Zingerman’s Coffee Company is just a short walk from the bakehouse, and serves high-quality cups of hot chocolate and coffee to wash down the baked goods.

Me and my little buddy like to go on “cupcake dates here”, for being in a commercial type compound it’s got a pretty cute little outdoor area to sit!

I dressed up their brownie with chocolatey ice cream a la Cold Stone and whipped cream. Was a delicious combo.

I took a class at Bake and was, as always, a wonderful experience. The classes are well organized, well taught, and fun. The staff is friendly and helpful and you always end up taking a ton of amazing food. I can highly recommend any Bake class!

First time visit here plenty of selection of baked goods and Breads and desserts highly recommend coming here customer service was excellent very helpful and attentive and explaining everything also have a small deli case of sweets such as cheesecake and other delectable Delights and also have some spreads and pimentos and cheese.

Awesome can’t go wrong with your holiday dessert selection!!! Yule Log, Chess Pie and Merry Mint Cake. Every year it just makes get togethers with family and friends memorable.

When the Bakehouse opened in 1992 it started an entire community of Zingerman's businesses. One of my very favorite things they bake, is their Sour Cream Coffee Cake! Simple things done well and made with excellent ingredients! It hits all the right notes! If I could send you to one spot to experience some of the very best food, cheese, baked goods, bread, coffee and candy that our country and world has to offer then it would be here in Ann Arbor, MI! Put the Bakehouse and this food wonderland at the very top of your to go to next list! The Zingerman's Bakehouse cook book is a must have for all bakers!

On an random chance, I bought Christmas Stollen from Zingerman's for my mom in 2011. She loved it; said it was the best she ever had! Since then, I've bought the Zingerman's Stollen each year, and this wasn't going to be any different... except I was buying it later than normal. Zingerman's Deli was sold out, (cue panic on my end) but were kind enough to tell me that the Bakehouse had some left.
Bakehouse parking lot was extremely busy, but there was plenty of parking because it was a weekend. They were only allowing a certain number of patrons at a time, and we had to wait outside about 5 minutes, which was fine to get the Stollen.
Once inside, the line was wrapped around the store, but there were many cashier's and it went fast. The amount of cakes, cookies, breads, brownies, and everything in between was staggering, and it all looked so delicious! Store was neat and clean so it was easy to find what I was looking for; (no digging around piles of different baked goods like at other stores, especially during the holidays.).
Cashier was very friendly and efficient.
All in all, we were in and out with what I needed in less than 10 minutes, even with hoping the line had been when we stepped in. Will be coming here for the Christmas Stollen each year going forward!
