Dr. Burkett and staff offer excellent care for feathered family members. My husband and I are new to birds; we accepted a rescued Dove into our lives about a month ago. We purchased Dr. Burkett's book, which was an amazing help to someone new to bird care! I am thoroughly impressed with his experience, his credentials, and his accomplishments in the field of avian veterinary medicine. I just knew I just had to have any bird in my care become a client of his. Before I could schedule wellness exams for my new doves, I thought one dove was coming down with an illness. I did my best 'bird nursing' for a few days before his appointment and was concerned that he would be gravely ill- too ill to save. At the appointment Dr. Burkett eased my mind within moments. He told me Turnip looked fine and ran a fecal test, which came back clear. With our being new to bird care and my heart for animals, Dr. Burkett could have executed as many unnecessary diagnostic tests as he wanted and I would have agreed. However, he only did what he thought was necessary and certainly didn't exploit my novice or emotional attachment to little Turnip. Before I left I scheduled wellness appointments for both doves and two pigeons. I am happy to patronize Dr. Burkett's practice and business. I am grateful that he is able to provide care for my feathered family members.

I never intented to grow attached to my backyard chickens. But when my top hen, Fantastic, fell ill last year, I crafted a makeshift cage and drove her over to The Bird Hospital. Dr. Burkett was wonderful: he provided thorough explanations of his testing procedures and diagnosis, demonstrated how to medicate my ill bird (which wasn't intuitive to me!), shared delight in Fantastic's funny and bold personality, and followed up via phone to get a sense of her progress. As a relatively new chicken owner, I gained knowledge and confidence about how to better care for my flock (which Fannie, I'm happy to stay, is still directing with vim and vigor).

The Doctor and his staff are true Bird Wisper’s
They handled our Chicken like they knew her .
They did a blood test and got a sample with no discomfort to our bird . Our chicken made a mess and they didn’t even blink a eye about it .
If you love your bird’s take them here .
They did a follow up with us and adjusted the
Medication . They did in-house testing and prescriptions on the spot .
They are a true treasure in Durham NC .
They Love what they do and it shows!!!

Dr. Burkett is one of the most knowledgeable veterinarians I have ever met. When my usually-very-active-and-tough-acting chicken became sick, he immediately knew what was wrong with her and she was cured of her dust mites in about a week! Also, there was one time a young cockerel of mine became sick overnight and didn't make it before I could take him to Dr. Burkett, but even though he never even had this chicken as a patient, he sent me a condolences card and it just made me feel so much better about what had happened! If you ever need to take your bird to the vet, please take them here!

Kind, knowledgeable, and responsive. Do note that examination room staff don't currently wear masks routinely but will courteously put them on if you request them to. Dr. Burkett has gone out of his way to educate me as a first-time bird owner and offers amazing care to my cranky, not-hand-tame rescue budgie.

Dr. Burkett is the best! I never feel rushed while we're there and he's always very kind and careful with my lovebird. They also have a great toy section for birds of all sizes and offer boarding!

Way above and beyond my expectations! Dr. Burkett was amazing. He spent time with my daughter and I and taught us everything we needed to know about caring for our green cheek conure. He was kind and very thoughtful in his suggestions. He never once made us feel bad for doing something "wrong". We simply didn't know. He explained everything he was doing and made us feel at ease. His prices are more than reasonable and he has a well stocked shop for all your avian needs. We will certainly be back! A huge thank you to Dr. Burkett and his staff!

Dr. Burkett is nothing short of an amazing bird vet and a super nice person. It's obvious that he is a bird lover and cares deeply about helping them live their best birdie lives. He patiently listened to all my questions and concerns and took time to answer them all in a way I understood. If you have a pet bird you can't find a better vet than Dr. Burkett! His staff are also super knowledgeable and helpful.

When I bought my two parakeets I first went to another Aviary vet to get them their initial check up. Then I boarded them with that Vet. I was not satisfied with the treatment I received there (from the staff) so I, thankfully, found Dr. Burkett's Avian service and I will never take my birds anywhere else. He really cares about my birds, even to showing me how to carve on their perches to make them more comfortable for their "feet." He always explains what and why he is doing something during their exams and is very knowledgeable when answering my questions. My birds are so much happier since I put them in a fly cage, which Dr. Burkett suggested, and they are no longer getting fat because of bad bird food choices! The staff is very friendly and I didn't have one concern when I boarded them there. If I could give him 10 stars, I would!

Dr. Burkett is knowledgeable and innovative in treating our parrot who loves to ingest shiny metallic items. He offers conservative approaches before more invasive ones, and he is great at communicating his diagnoses and treatment plans with us. We trust him greatly with our beloved pet.

I recently took my lovebird to Dr. Burkett for an emergency visit. Dr. Burkett was wonderful along with every member of his staff. He took great care of my baby, told me what to look for and how to care for her for her recovery. I cannot begin to tell you how appreciative I am that there are doctors like Dr. Burkett. I trust my baby’s care with no one else.

I love this place. I've tried another place and wasn't too impressed. As soon as I came here the doctor asked me a ton of questions about my bird and gave me some fantastic advice on how to better care for my bird. I was recommended an alternate diet and after a few months my birds feathers looked entirely different. My bird is doing amazing and we are now going to use this doctor for all of our birds needs. We are lifers for sure.

Dr. Greg Burkett and his staff did a wonderful job with our Crimson-Bellied Conure, who was unfortunately really sick with Bornavirus. Clinic-wise, everyone was really gentle and caring regarding the handling and treatment of her, and I never felt rushed or dismissed.

Dr. Burkett was extremely knowledgeable and always listened to and answered our questions and concerns in a compassionate manner. He even went out of his way to personally mail us one of the latest research papers regarding the Bornavirus when we got into a more technical conversation about it.

The bottom line is: you can tell he really cares about birds. I'm astonished anyone would feel otherwise. He is direct and doesn't mince words when discussing the care of your bird and ensures that you have the knowledge you need to care for your bird and he will absolutely go out of his way to ensure your bird is as happy and healthy as possible.

I was so thankful to have someone like Dr. Burkett so close by and will continue to bring my birds to him for their care.

I just got my Indian Ringneck, Elon, almost 2 months ago. This will be the only place I take my bird! I have a full service vet 5 mintues from my home but will take the 40 minute drive to Durham. Dr. Burkett is amazing! He takes the time to answer any questions and focuses on making sure you have a happy healthy bird. Dr. Burkett is also one of the top Avian doctors in the country so it just makes sense to take my baby here.

Dr.Burkett is truly a gem, so kind and professional. I took my sick chicken in to see him, on a Thursday when they are closed. He met me at the clinic and humanely euthanized my sweet girl. Will definitely be back to see him if any more issues arise with my chickens, the time and the care he took today meant so much to me.

We came to this hospital unfortunately to have our very sick chicken euthanized, and Dr Burkett and his staff were nothing short of very compassionate, knowledgable and professional. They also were able to schedule us very quickly, within two hours of my call and on a holiday, and even saw us early. We found the hospital to be a very relaxing place for patients and their care-givers, in our opinion, unlike many hospitals that see exotics. They let us be with our chicken while she was humanely euthanized and we thank them for that, as well. I hope we can learn more from this excellent doctor and staff to keep our chickens happy and healthy! We are very grateful to have them near us!

What a wonderful experience. My poor bird broke its leg, and I drove nearly 2 hours to get here. I am so glad I did, this is the only place I will ever take any of my birds. The doctor is caring and knowledgeable. There are a lot of it’s out there who called themselves avian vet, but this is the real deal.

I can't say enough about your services there's a reason why I call you Doctor five star. I brought in my hyacinth macaw for a second opinion because I knew something was wrong and the other vet had no idea it was such a blessing that you found the mass and the blood work results and was able to provide medications and I am looking forward to coming next month turi x-ray and fingers crossed this mask is getting smaller. I just rescued three more birds and when I make my appointment I will be bringing one at a time of course doctor five star you're not cheap lol.... I will never go any place ever again thank you guys all for doing what you do"

Dr. Burkett has repeatedly gone "above and beyond" to help us with some challenging wild waterfowl injuries. I have found Dr. B and his staff to be excellent, and a joy to work with.
