Wonderful gem in the north end of Virginia's Appalachia. 25 bucks gets you a walking tour through some amazing caverns. The geological structures of these caverns were unlike anything I have seen. They are also very old so lots are broken but I think it added to the history of the caverns. Rose gave a fantastic tour. I highly recommend this if you are visiting Shenandoah or Blue Ridge Parkway.

This place has a great guided tour. Anna was so funny and informative. The pictures we got that day didn't do this place justice.
Massive rooms of rocks that will blow your mind. 55 degrees so dress warm.

Out of all the cavern tours I have done up and down the I-81 corridor, this was definitely the most informative and interesting. Aaron did an excellent job of incorporating both science and history into the tour, which I thought was fantastic because the mix of both is really what sets Grand Caverns apart from any of the others up or down the road.

My only complaint (and I am not even sure that anything could be done to fix this for someone in the future, but it made my experience unpleasant enough that I probably wouldn’t come back) is the other folks who were on the tour. I am about 5 feet tall on a good day and my son, who is 7, is about a head shorter than me. Every other one of the 20 plus people were average height to tall. In no way were we, in our dwarfish state, going to block anyone’s view of anything (well maybe the floor)

However, I think at least half if not more of the people on that tour at one point or another SHOVED either my son or I out of their way. To the point where I loudly commented on it. Maybe they misunderstood where we were and thought we were trying to get off the Titanic or something, idk. Anyway it was dumb and I was too tired to deal with Karens so wasn’t worth interrupting Aaron’s A+ tour to make a scene.

Did the Rock Bottom Adventure tour with my wife. We had 3 guides to ourselves as we were only ones signed up that day. After getting our gear and instructions, we made our way up to the cave entrance. This is not your walk through tour. You are maneuvering around, sometimes crawling around and getting a bit dirty. There are some options as to the difficulty of the paths you travel. But the interior of the cave was incredible. The guides were great, very knowledgeable about the history of the cave, and felt very safe. Definitely make sure you have shoes with good tread and be prepared for some fun climbing and crawling around. Highly recommend.

our tour guide, daniel, was very informative and came off as a trustworthy guy. the views were of course very beautiful but it’s also nice to know the history of the caverns

The caverns themselves are marvelous. I’ve seen a lot of caves, and these were definitely at or towards the top of the list. We chose a walking tour, but “adventure tours” that go deeper into the caves are also available.

Our tour guide, Diana, may have been the best tour guide I’ve had the pleasure of following in my entire life. At the beginning of the tour, a little girl expressed her apprehension. Without missing a beat, Diana called her over to a formation where she shone her flashlight and pointed out the sparkling calcite to help her see how magical (not scary) it was.

She was upbeat, funny, projected well, and she answered every question asked of her. She kept things moving at a good pace (not too rushed, but quick enough that we could see as much as possible). She remembered that I had asked about helictites halfway through the tour, and she took special care to point out one as we exited (and of course gave a great explanation of the science behind them).

She did a great job of balancing her commentary between the history and science of the caverns. She pointed out the imagined shapes and corresponding names (e.g. a “zoo” of animal-shaped rock formations), but she didn’t dwell on them to the point of tediousness the way I’ve some cave tour guides have done in my experiences elsewhere.

Perhaps most importantly, it was thoroughly apparent that she loves caves and teaching people about them.

Please give Diana a raise (and a laser pointer) ASAP!

We had an amazing time! Our group was big, with lots of young kids, but our tour guide did a fantastic job keeping them entertained. They offer a variety of options for exploring the cave. We went with the 70-minute standard tour this time, but we're definitely planning to come back for one of the more adventurous ones!

This was an incredible experience. I've visited about 16 caves around the globe in my lifetime, and this was honestly the most detailed, intriguing, and humongous one I've been to. This cave is HUGE and the ceilings are high! It is also quite safe wit than easy pathway and safe floors to walk on. I highly recommend this tour. It is magnificent.

Outstanding cave system with many rare shield formations. It has been "tamed" for easier tours, but still several low hanging areas and slippery paths so mind your head and step.

I've been to a tour here and it was great! The Subterranean Sound however was a near-religious experience. I saw Palmyra and it was the absolute best show I have ever been to. The acoustics were great and I thought the drink set up was very good. If I could change one tiny thing, it would be a lighter beer option. The wine was great though, so maybe that worked out better for me :) 10/10 hope to come again!

This place was wonderful. We had a great tour guide and it was so pretty. We went late afternoon and had a very small group. I would recommend this visit to anyone. The tour is about an hour long and little over 3/4th of a mile. The walk is easy with a gravel footpath. There are a few stairs

Chillingly fun! The cave stays a constant 54 degrees so bring a jacket. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and added bits of humor throughout. The cave is a natural beauty. Very much enjoyed.

Caution should be taken as pathways are dimly lit and can also be slippery.

Great experience with 1 hour-tour. Little cold in the cave (recommend to bring jacket). There is also fun mining (little charge) for fossil, foreign coins, and gemstones.

Grand Caverns was amazing. Tim was full of knowledge and answered questions from all ages in our group with ease. The tour was interesting from start to finish, with occasional humor and he even took a photo at a great spot for each group within our group. Our tour was probably just over an hour with small kids to adults, all who were able to keep up. Honestly, the hardest part of the tour is walking from the gift shop/ticket counter up the hill to the start of the tour. Someone with bad knees or has mobility issues may struggle with that and the one flight of stairs into the building. The tour really isn't a hard walk and the temperature is around 54° if cold temps bother you. It's such a great cavern and experience. Grand Caverns is much more personal and less touristy. And the gift shop is great if you're into rocks --- super reasonable prices.

Gabe was awesome! He was funny, informative and was a joy to be our tour guide! Learned a lot during the tour and enjoyed the scenery within the caves. There was a lot of parking and the cave was chilly enough for me to wear a light sweat shirt, but I prefer the heat so each to their own.

I highly recommend visiting the caverns! Aaron was an awesome and funny tour guide. We had so much fun learning about the geology and history. On the standard tour almost all of the areas are very open so you don’t have to worry about being claustrophobic! There are also benches along the way throughout the path to sit down if you need. I hope to visit again some day!

My husband and i were staying in Luray,Virginia to do some hiking decided to book the after hours Grottoes Crawl. It was the full three hours of crawling through holes/tunnels and walking around the cave and it was awesome! This was our first time in a cave/caverns and it was incredible. We had a terrific time with our guides Gabe and Dianna! They were so interactive and funny together. There were only four people in our group and it made it really easy to ask questions and learn more about the caverns. If you like more of an adventure book this tour!! It was so cool to walk around the caves in total darkness after hours, we got a good mix of history/geology/and adventure all in one. So happy we took the drive and decided to check out Grand Caverns!
