Joseph C. Shanahan, MD

I was very happy - and lucky - to find Dr Shanahan. Starting May 2023, I started getting pain in my Left hand. It got increasingly worse over the next few months. In that time, I had several visits with my PCP, 2 Neurologists, 2 Orthopedists, 1 Opthaneurologist along with multiple scans and blood draws for tests. While there were plenty of theories, no real progress. I felt like a lab animal. Dr Joe had 1 meeting with me then pored over the notes from my other Dr visits. He texted me on weekends. He ordered a scan for me of a different part of my body and helped identify that I had an arterial blockage that was tied to a rare Syndrome.
His thoughtful approach has me on the proper path.

From my first appointment with Dr. Shanahan, I felt lucky to have found such a caring and dedicated doctor to treat my RA. I have been his patient for over 4 years now, and during that time he has always been responsive to my questions and concerns. I never feel rushed through appointments. He is obviously extremely knowledgeable, and he keeps up with medical advances and cutting-edge treatments. Importantly, he always explains my treatment options in a way that is respectful, thoughtful, and understandable.

I have been coming to Dr Shanahan for 13 years. He is a genuine caring human being before being a doctor. His staff is also great.

Dr. Shanahan is by far the best and most reliable Physician I have ever been fortunate to be included on his patient list. He not only has been a God sent for the Lupus and Osteoporosis I have, but has gone outside of his "speciality" to test and uncover other medical problems I have. He is unbeatable with his personality and dedication to his patients. I may be his biggest "supporter", since I have followed him from from the beginning of his career to Wilmington to Raleigh where he opened his own practice. I am thankful daily for being under his care.

Outstanding new patient appt. with Dr. Shanahan. He clearly has a comprehensive knowledge base, stronger in this specialty than other physicians I have spoken with. His office is new, in a good location with easy access. His staff is pleasant and efficient. Overall, a wonderful experience with a provider who I believe will be able to effectively guide my needed care. As with other rheumatologists in this area, his office requires a referral to make the initial appointment. This is, as noted, standard for the Raleigh/RTP area and makes sense given the complexities of conditions treated.

Dr. Shanahan has always provided me with good medical care. He is attentive to my needs and I highly recommend him. The staff is friendly and courteous and has done a great job in scheduling my appointments and facilitating communication with Dr. Shanahan. The new office is modern and clean. Again, I highly recommend this doctor and practice.

I saw 6 Rheumatologists before mtg DR. S! The one I saw in 2001 said I had 3-5 years to live. He said sorry those were the cards I had been dealt. The one I saw in 2007 was too overwhelmed by my case and sent me to Duke & that's were my life changed for the better, when I first met Dr. Joseph Shanahan When you have autoimmune diseases there are constant "battles" that you go through. Whatever adversity you face ILD, Scleroderma, Lupus, RA, You should trust Dr. J .Shanahan & his staff. Doc is Brilliant. I trust his knowledge as a rheumatologist/specialist. He is willing to go the extra mile to help his patients. He office is equipped with an infusion room, a research lab and a phlebotomist to check your blood work. His staff is fantastic! They help deal with the insurance companies and make sure your visit is fabulous. Sickness can be overwhelming & scary however Dr.Shanahan & his staff are able to bring comfort, love, & peace. Seeing how I spend so much time there I realize they are my home away from home. My 2nd Family. I receive wisdom regarding my health and concern for my wellbeing from Dr. S, and TLC from his staff. That’s what I want and need from my Dr. and what I always get from SRI & Dr. Joseph Shanahan.

Dr. Shanahan and his staff have been a Godsend for me. After spending several years going to many different rhuematologist, I finally found one who was willing to treat me as an individual and not as a disease. He spends the time to inquire about my life and health in general, in addition to treating my disease. He is very proactive in terms of doing what it takes to keep my lupus flares to a minimum ensuring my overall health. He's also great at coordinating care with all of the other physicians that I need to see. The staff is super courteous and caring. I always feel like they are in my corner. The best Rheumatalogist ever!

Dr. Shanahan is the best in the business! He is knowledgeable and kind. Kindness goes a long way towards good health. He would still be my rheumatologist if my life circumstances allowed.
