Surf Shack

Our whole family (two adults and two kids: 11 and 6 yo) took a surf lesson at the Surf Shack Maui (1993 Kihei Road) and had a blast!!! It was by far the best activity we did during our three week stay in Hawaii. Jay (Jose) was our instructor and his humor, gentle approach, encouragement and love for surfing were all that we needed to get hooked on surfing from the first class. We came back for a follow up class a few days later and still could not get enough. Unfortunately we had to fly to Waikiki a few days later and ended up renting boards every day to surf, that's how fun Jose made it. Cannot wait to hit some waves in Costa Rica soon and practice what we learned. Thank you Surf Shack and thank you Jay (Jose).

Great instructor! Wife and I did a private lesson, and my wife was able to stand up and surf. We never surfed before. They are very friendly and know their stuff. Definitely recommend! Sofia was amazing!

DON'T MISS OUT!!! Surf Shack made learning how to surf for this uncoordinated gal feel like I was a local wahine. Our instructor, Sophia, was so patient and gave the best tips that had us all up on our boards on our first try. Best deal in town and we even got a photo package that landed us some pretty awesome photos to remember the experience by. We went with a couple who had surfed a few times before and they even said that was their best experience. Paddling was def my weakness but no worries, there was no judgement for walking my board back out to catch the next wave; in fact, the spot Surf Shack uses is ideal for beginners because its more shallow towards the shore with rocks that helps us shortys to push off of to get back out there. The guys had such a great experience, they ended up coming back to rent boards and give it a go on their own; deal came with a board, shirt, and shoes for 4 hours! The team member there was so kind he even lent us (the two gals) shoes to get out in the ocean which was perfect because we got to see fish and even spotted a sea turtle!

My 8yr old son and took a lesson last week and had an absolute blast! I was initially worried about how busy it was in the water but our instructor (Camila) was incredibly calm and patient and made it stress free, she is the best! Would highly recommend Surf Shack for lessons.

Rented boards for a few days and trainers here are amazing. I hadn’t signed up for lessons after my first day and they kept helping me every day in the water regardless of whether I was in the class or not. Mike especially was amazing. Kept giving me tips and helped push a few times. Def coming back. They also gave me 10% discount for coming back and renting with them after lessons!

We had a great time learning to surf today!! All 8 of us were able to get up. Ama and Joaquin were excellent teachers and lots of fun! We loved our time surfing! It was perfect!

Very nice staff, easy to get into the water, excellent waves for beginners (October). I rented a board (not a lesson). But one of their instructors (Segundo) was kind enough to give me pointers anyhow. Thank you!!

Mike was awesome! His experience and knowledge made our rides easy and fun. Our photographer, Jess, topped off our experience. And our check-in chica, was exceptional. Definitely recommend. Mahalo!

If you have never surfed before and are thinking about trying it, definitely do it with this company. They give you enough time on the water to really try it all out, they provide the gear, and do land drills with you. They only put 6 people per instructor so you really get the needed one on one time to learn all the tips and tricks and have support along the way. My instructor Manu was AMAZING. He was patient, kind, and knew a lot about surfing and ocean conditions. Highly recommend Manu !!!

I loved my experience with the Surf Shack! It was my first time surfing, and the instructor (Mike) did a great job! All the instructions and directions were clearly communicated, so by the time we got out into the water I had a good idea of what I needed to do (though it took me a couple tries to stand up!) Mike was helpful, funny, and easy to talk to. He made my first try at surfing a memory I will cherish forever.
I was in a group with 5 other adults, and I think the size was perfect for 1-on-1 and group instruction. I went at 8am, which I think was a good time for wave sizes, but it was fairly crowded- not enough to dampen the fun, but enough to make you watch out for where you were going.

My kids 14yr and 9yr took a beginner surf lesson. They had Mike as an instructor, and he's great. The group lessons are small groups, so everyone gets attention from the instructor. They had so much fun and are looking forward to surfing again! There is a photographer to take photos of the lesson, it's an extra cost, but was worthwhile for us as a memento from vacation.

Surf Shack taught me how to surf! I walked in not knowing what to expect and walked out wanting to learn more and continue surfing! I was in a group class and our instructor was a pro - super patient and knowledgeable. By the end, he had all of us standing up and surfing! One of the highlights of my trip to Maui and will actively recommend surfing lessons at Surf Shack to anyone I know going to Maui!

I have never surfed before, and I was so shocked that I was able to stand up on the surfboard and surf all the way to shore. Over and over again! Our instructor Manu was such an amazing teacher that we even caught waves on our own by the end. Definitely take lessons here and ask for Manu. He was patient, kind, and gave wonderful instructions that were specific and easy to follow. He also did a really good job of making everyone feel included and giving personal attention to all six of us in the group. He answered all of our questions and gave us a vast depth of understanding of surfing as well.

We loved learning how to surf with Surf Shack! Everyone was very nice and friendly and our instructor, Nani, was the best! He was very encouraging and had great tips for making the most of a wave! We loved it so much we went back and did a second lesson before renting some boards and going out ourselves.

Very good experience. Mike is Awesome very thorough and experienced instructor. Was able to have first timers up and surfing in 2-3 tries. Waves weren't that great on the day I went but had a great experience with this team. Highly recommended buisness

Had Mike as an instructor and he was amazing!! Got both me & my partner standing in no time. The waves were perfect and it was a beautiful day. Highly recommend! We both had a great time & plan on going surfing again soon!

Take lessons here! The staff (Chris and Manu) were very down-to-earth and great instructors. I was unsure if I was going to get the hang of it, but they showed us all the right moves to get up and surfing quick.

The length of time on the water was perfect too. Just about when we started getting tired it was time to go. Plus they had a photographer taking pics of us, so now I have proof that I’m cool 😎

My family and I just took surf lessons here and absolutely loved it! We were pretty scared to try thinking we would be in deep water but you can touch the ground the entire time, it's in shallow water so it's way easier to learn, the instructors are awesome, and they take pictures for you!
