Excellent surgeon and staff. I am 67 and had my hip replaced 12 weeks ago. I am back to swimming diving surfing, whatever I want to do. My hip had been so bad my legs were different lengths and I could not stand with my feet together without bending one knee. Perfect now. Aloha Surgery Center is also excellent. I was in and out in one day , a total of 5 hours. I am a retired RN and so happy to have such a great surgeon on island.

I want to thank Dr. Thielen & his staff for everything they did pre & post surgery.
I now have a new lease on life because of Dr. Thielen’s expertise. My “new” knee is perfect.
I was worried I would not be able to surf, swim, walk normally, etc. Those worries are no longer. I feel great & doing much more than expected with my new knee.

Dr Theilen replaced both of my hips one year apart. I was able to walk within a short amount of time. With Pt I was out of pain and no limping within six weeks. Fantastic results and I’m back to enjoying my walks and snorkeling painless. Thank you Dr Theilen and Emily.

After a year of being in pain and limping, two friends suggested Dr. Thielen for a consultation. After X-rays and several conversations we scheduled my hip replacement surgery. Dr. Thielen and his staff explained every pre surgery detail as we got closer to the surgery date. I felt comfortable and confident with Dr. Thielen doing the surgery. I had questions the first few weeks after the surgery. Dr. Thielen and several of his staff were always available to answer my questions. My surgery was 14 weeks ago. I am finished with Physical Therapy, I am walking normally and am very happy and grateful that Dr. Thielen and his team assisted me to where I am today. I highly recommend this professional team!

Dr Thielen is a compassionate doctor who did a great job on my knee replacement. Robotic assisted surgery.. As a former physical therapist he was obliging for my detailed questions. At 10 weeks 125 degrees I thought maybe an adhesion/ scar tissue : he loosened it up with his range of motion testing in the office: now close to 140 degrees . I’m back to dancing 💃🏻

Dr. Thielen exhibited exquisite bed-side manners during the entire process with my situation. His surgical expertise resulted in a successful surgery with no negative after effects (i.e. infections, pain, etc.). Highly recommend Dr. Thielen. I also found his staff to be professional, courteous and friendly.

Being a patient and having to rely on others is not something that I enjoy doing. As a physician who has now become a patient requiring major surgery, having a doctor and surgeon who is skillful, reliable, and thoughtful about his patients gives me confidence which eases some anxiety about the procedure and encourages me to become a better patient. I followed Dr. Thielen's recommendation and instructions. I went into the surgery center in the morning and was home the same day that afternoon. In 2015 (I was 65 at the time) I flew to the mainland for my first hip replacement. It was successful but required nights in the hospital and weeks away from Maui - so I put off addressing my second hip far too long. Happily, two friends shared their great experience right here at home with Maui Orthopedic Institute. I feel so fortunate. No hospital stay; home in my own bed the same day as surgery. The Doctor and staff were wonderful. My recovery has exceeded my hopes. I am ocean swimming, hiking, and even dancing hula again. Thank you!

Dr Thielen is an orthopedic Magic Man

If you need an orthopedic doctor and surgeon on Maui Dr Thielen is your man. He is an amazingly careful, caring and experienced surgeon. Just check out his bio. Dr Thielen replaced my hip in January 2023 and replaced my knee in July 2024. I was walking on my own within 2 weeks of both surgeries with very little pain and really strong new parts. Dr Thielen will be replacing my other knee in September 2024. I cannot recommend him highly enough. You won't find a better orthopedic surgeon anywhere. His staff is amazing too. They're friendly and caring and actually call you back and get you in for an appointment quickly. Maui Orthopedic is the place to go.

I was referred to Maui Orthopedic by 2 friends who had procedures done by Dr. Thielen - 1 hip replacement and 1 knee replacement. These two women simply gushed about the doctor and his practice. My first visit was in April of 2022. Immediately, Dr. Thielen made me feel at ease (my prior ortho doc honestly scared me). Thielen explained that my surgery was a 'life enhancement' procedure. He was 1000% correct. My knee was replaced on island at the surgical center on June 8th, 2022 and I was back to work on August 3rd! Physical therapy complete (shout out to Maura and the crew at Venture PT) and no more knee pain. I am so glad I chose Dr. Thielen and his very capable staff to take care of me and help me be free of the pain I endured for 3+ years. I cannot say enough positive things about my experience with Dr Thielen and his staff at Maui Orthopedic Institute. At my consultation he very patiently reviewed my X-rays and explained why he would recommend I have my hip replaced. Dr Thielen answered all of my questions, he made me feel at ease with the whole process and I knew I was in good hands. Scheduling of surgery and appointments were handled effortlessly by the staff. My anterior total hip replacement was on a Monday and I went home the same day. Everything at the hospital ran smoothly Dr Thielen and his team checked on me throughout the different phases of my stay. At home physical therapy really made a difference in my recovery. I appreciated all the tips that the PT gave to help me regain my independence. My pain was well controlled post op and I progressed from a walker to a cane and then no assistive devices quickly. I am grateful for the high quality care I received and I appreciate the improvement in my quality of life this surgery has provided.

I had a total knee replacement done four months ago. Dr. Thielen, Emily Newman and staff were absolutely wonderful. From the very first meeting, through the surgery and follow up appointments, Everyone was informative, personable, professional and caring. I feel very fortunate to have had Maui Orthopedic Institute and, most importantly, Dr. Thielen as my orthopedic surgeon.

Dr. Thielen is at the top of his profession. I had anterior minimally invasive total hip replacement in my left hip. I am in my 70's. Six days after surgery I walked comfortably with only a cane. A few days later I also ditched the cane.

In addition to surgical skill, Dr. Thielen and his entire team were responsive, efficient, nice people. I never felt like "just another client."

While, admittedly, I haven’t needed them for surgery or a - serious - injury, I have had several occasions to see Dr. Zachary Thielen &, therefore, to experience the practice, the reception & nursing staffs, & to see how well they function & treat patients. And, what’s more, as a health care provider, I know how hard it is to do things right & when they’re being done with excellence. At Maui Orthopedic Institute they are “doing things” to perfection! In my four visits, I was treated promptly, with respect, kindness, & dignity.

I have rarely - no, never - experienced a medical practice where the staff worked together as well as this one does. Not only do they operate like a well-oiled machine, but there seems to be a smile on every face! There’s an atmosphere of welcome & eagerness to help. I have usually been escorted to the exam room from the Reception Desk without ever having time to sit down (though I am too experienced in the practice of medicine to believe it can always go this way). Not only does wait time seem amazingly brief, but once in the exam room, the nurse & then Dr. Thielen appear quickly as well. All in all, everything goes very smoothly and efficiently.

But what makes the biggest impression at Maui Orthopedic Institute is what can only be called the ‘spirit of Aloha’. Though it is a cliché here in Hawai’i, it absolutely radiates from every single person one encounters. My name is Samantha, and I was a medical assistant working at Maui Orthopedic Institute for Dr. Thielen and Dr. Eno. I was with the practice from opening day in the fall of 2021 until October of 2022. Unfortunately for me, things shifted in my personal life, and I made the difficult decision to return to California.

Since my departure, I think about the practice, the surgeons and the support staff often. I have been in the medical field for 9 years and Maui Orthopedic Institute is unlike any place I've ever worked. From the moment Dr. Thielen interviewed me, I knew this environment was going to be different and in a good way, I just wasn't quite sure how. Quickly, I got to see not just the talented surgeon I had read about but someone with an ongoing commitment to growth and passionate about the care he provides. As an employee and as a patient, I can say not all doctors I have encountered are friendly and much less approachable. However, as the practice began to take off, Dr. Thielen was always enthusiastic, and that energy was contagious! He also encouraged to make suggestions about workflows, office set up and some aspects of my side of patient care. Dr. Thielen is a great teacher!

Shortly after, Dr. Eno joined the team and what a golden addition he is to Maui and to the practice. Dr. Eno is phenomenal and gifted at what he does. There is no denying that he was born for his line of work. It's very clear that he pours his heart into the care of each of his patients.

It came as a surprise to no one that word quickly spread about such a powerful duo. The team grew and within it is a new PA Emily who is absolutely wonderful, a business manager, hardworking medical assistants and a welcoming receptionist. I miss this team so much! I cannot say it enough. Everyone works so hard to provide the best quality care possible and everyone is just kind and warm towards each other, always treating one another with the utmost respect.

Today, now back in California, I rave about the practice, about Dr. Thielen and Dr. Eno to literally anyone who will listen. I was so proud to be MOI staff. I grew so much as a medical assistant and as a person. I value the lessons, guidance and support that I received during my time there and I will carry that with me everywhere I go.

Dr. Thielen has set the bar high for what I see in a leader. He and his team have made this practice top tier. I cannot thank Dr. Thielen, his wife Annie and the rest of the team enough for the confidence they instilled in me and for demonstrating and reminding me what medicine is all about.

Skill, precision, compassion, respectful, and nice - these are the words that immediately come to mind when I am asked to describe Dr. Thielen. Maui is so fortunate to have him and his team here on our island to treat anyone who needs a hip replacement. I am astonished at what my right hip can do now after years of immobility and compensation. My surgery was complication free as is my present recovery process. Dr. Thielen explained everything to me before and after the surgery, and on the day of surgery, he visited me in the pre-op which I appreciated immensely. In addition, the office staff will be your cheerleaders as you prepare and recover from surgery answering all of your questions promptly. I had my hip replaced by Dr. Thielen last June when he was still at Kaiser. Aside from being a highly skilled, rockstar surgeon he is incredibly down-to-earth and humble. My surgery went really well, my recovery with Swift and the quality of my life—especially in the athletic department—has improved dramatically.
