I am so grateful for the services and treatment provided by Dr. Shanahan and his staff. I give him a 5 star for his knowledge, professionalism, patience, attentiveness and caring. I never feel feel rushed or ignored while I am explaining my symptoms. I am 1 year into my NR-axSPA diagnosis. I came to him with a pain level of 8-10; not able to get in more than 2000 steps per day. Now, I am averaging 14,000 steps per day. I even did a 7 mile hike with my family last week. I thought those days were gone. He was and still is concern about making sure I am on the right meds that can control my symptoms and allowing me to live pain free. I am so pleased to be under his care. Thank you Dr. Shanahan and staff.

Dr Shanahan is my life saver. Had it not been his care in 2013, I would probably be counted among the dead. He is a listener, knowledgeable, patient, understanding, and works with patients to understand their treatment plans. I highly recommend his practice for folks dealing with RA, Dematomyositis, Lupus, and all who need Immunotherapy and Rheumatology care.

Having lupus for almost 20 years Dr Shanahan really helped me stay sane & out of the hospital through many scary, uncertain times & my life & outlook changed for the better the day I met him at a lupus group meeting.

I truly believe his care literally changed the outcome of my life & any of these lame reviews I seriously challenge because he is an intelligent & caring person & gives his all to every patient & I can give numerous examples.

At times of almost zero hope he has brought me back to feeling SO much better physically & emotionally and anyone who knows him can attest to his investment in his patient care being 110%.

He can’t take on every patient in the world unfortunately, so perhaps some people are hurt and left not nice reviews, but frankly that shouldn’t reflect on him or his practice at all because it’s not an accurate representation at all based on my almost 2 decades of my ups and downs with my imperfect immune system & it’s often mysterious issues.

No one has helped me as much as he has and I’ve seen many different rheumatologists in the triangle area. In fact I was about to start driving to Wilmington when his practice moved there until he came back to this area!

If you’re wondering who the best rheumatologist is in the RTP area is I doubt you’ll be disappointed if you’re lucky enough to have him as your doctor because he’s a great man as much as he is a great doctor who cares a ton about helping people’s lives get better so we can tackle these diseases together without being constantly afraid anymore & that matters to me because I’ve been through a lot & just needed to get back to being myself again and I never felt I had that as much with any other doctor I’ve met in my life since my lupus issues began with multiple blood clots in the 1990s.

When I heard he had reviews that were not accurate I couldn’t believe it and knew I had to tell you the truth & it’s a fact he’s an amazing doctor, and can help give others courage to stay strong and help educate you on how together we can all beat these diseases and that’s priceless to me!

Thank you Dr Shanahan!! You rock!! 🤍

I have been a patient of Dr. Shanahan's for 7 years. I have a lot of autoimmune going on and he has always been a step ahead with thorough procedures, medications, biomeds, and other therapies. I feel well cared for. His staff is just super. Low wait times, great explanation of his plan.

I’ve had a great experience at Shanahan Rheumatology. I’ve been a client for over 15 years living with Psoriatic Arthritis. Dr. Shanahan listens to me and is always willing to try new medications if needed and is extremely knowledgeable on the latest technologies. The staff is friendly and whenever I call the nurses line I always get a call back within 24 hours. I highly recommend Shanahan Rheumatology.

I am posting on behalf of my grandmother. This doctor is out of the world phenomenal. She has been through so many doctors in her life, no one pays attention as much as Dr. Shanahan does. Thank you!!!

The Best in Eastern NC. He and his staff are always there to help with your condition in anyway they can. Recently my body just keeps getting sick while on meds for RA. He doesn't give up until he finds what works for you!! I have always referred him to friends and family and they are always happy with his, kind and caring ways to get you feeling better.

We had a referral from our primary care Dr to see Dr Shanahan for my husband's RA. It has been the best thing that has happened to him since his original Dr retired. He has had RA over 30 years and has been on Humeria for several years but he constantly had flare-ups and would have to take prednisone to get relief. On our first visit to Dr Shanahan, he sat down, "talked" to us and had some blood work done in his lab. Once the results returned we received a call to take Humeria every week instead of every other week. After a few weeks of doing this we called to let him know my husband's hands and wrists were swollen badly and he was in a lot pain. We were able to get an appt the next day. We saw his PA and after an exam of his problem, it was suggested he stop taking Humeria and take Rinvoq. It has been a tremendous change with no swelling and no pain. Hope this continues. Not only has Dr Shanahan been so nice but also his PA has been wonderful to work with. His office staff, his lab technicians and everyone has been so pleasant. My husband has commented that it had been so nice to call and the person that answers the phone to be so nice and to visit his office and find the people to be so pleasant. What a difference it makes that everyone is so pleasant and genuinely seems to be happy and caring. Thank you to Dr Shanahan and his staff for making a Dr visit so pleasant.

In over 40 years of treatment, countless doctors I saw failed to relieve my suffering and get my autoimmune issues under control. I was frustrated and at times angry. Those doctors were either poorly trained, had a terrible bedside manner, or simply didn’t listen to me. I suffered, I think, needlessly.

It was only when my pulmonologist intervened and recommended Dr. Shanahan to me that I finally found the relief I desperately needed. From my first visit Dr. Shanahan’s staff has been genuinely friendly and, even better, highly competent. The camaraderie in his office is infectious and quickly puts me at ease.

It is so obvious that Dr. Shanahan truly cares about his patients. He asks lots of insightful questions and listens – really listens – to what I tell him. In over two years now, he has never once cut me off mid-sentence. Happily, within months of that first visit, I felt like a kid again. My pain was under control, and I had energy to burn. He. Is. The. Best!!!!!

I have been with Dr. Shanahan and his team since he opened his practice in Brier Creek, and he is my all-time favorite doctor. He recently moved to Durham, and though I live in Raleigh, I would follow him anywhere in the greater Triangle area - or further. He takes the time to answer all my questions - I never feel rushed. He's personable, caring, thorough, and he engages me in the decisions around my care – I am part of my care team. The staff is friendly and professional. When I communicate through the patient portal, someone gets back to me same day, usually within a couple hours. Labs are done right there in the office when I need them, so it’s very convenient. Dr. Shanahan is wonderful……if you need a Rheumatologist, I highly recommend him!

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Shanahan and his staff. Dr. Shanahan diagnosed and treats my very rare cardiac autoimmune condition that only a few people in the US are living with. When not caught early most diagnoses are done post mortem. Dr. Shanahan was able to create a treatment plan for me even though there is no research into it and no known way to treat it.
Dr. Shanahan's staff is exemplary. I have never seen a better run office. From the front desk to the medical staff, to his physicians assistant as well as the in house lab for getting blood work done. They work Hard for Dr. Shanahan because he treats them like valued team members and not subordinates. It is a great type of energy to be around. Especially when you are not feeling well.

Dr. Shanahan has always been very attentive to my needs. The staff is courteous and has scheduled all my requested appointments and handled all messaging in a professional way. The office is new and has a very modern clean atmosphere. The infusion room is light and bright. I highly recommend this practice to those of you looking good medical care for rheumatology issues.

Originally I wrote a poor review because I was frustrated with my condition but now I can honestly say that the only reason I'm able to lead a normal life is because of Dr. Shanahan's efforts to diagnose and treat me. Without the medication he prescribed I would be constantly bedridden. The difference is truly remarkable. Thank you.

Dr. Shanahan has been amazing in the treatment of my psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. He and his staff have gone above and beyond to make sure that the medications are working and that medications are approved by insurance. He and his office staff are all very friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend Dr. Shanahan to anyone!

When I had concerns of abnormal symptoms and my family's medical history, I chose Shanahan Rheumatology. Dr. Shanahan provided me with fully comprehensive care. He took the time necessary to examine me and gain a full understanding of my symptoms, concerns, and family history. Dr. Shanahan articulated his thoughts and next steps in a way that was easy for me to understand. The phlebotomist in the lab was also gentle and friendly. Dr. Shanahan contacted me on a Saturday to share the results of my lab work. I have since visited the office several times for follow up. The front office staff has always been professional and friendly. I am so pleased with my experience and care at Shanahan Rheumatology that I referred my mother and father to Dr. Shanahan. They are both now patients. I would not hesitate to recommend Shanahan Rheumatology to anyone with rheumatological concerns.

I have been a patient of Shanahan Rheumatology for 5 years. I visited Dr. Shanahan after my dentist and ophthalmologist were concerned I had a rheumatological condition. Not only did Dr. Shanahan correctly diagnose my symptoms, but he provided an explanation for other symptoms I was having that I believed were unrelated. He was thorough and took as much time as was necessary for me to understand my condition. I cannot recommend Shanahan Rheumatology highly enough! I have never met a more caring and compassionate doctor than Dr. Shanahan.

I am very uncomfortable around Dr offices in general due to my anxiety. I first met Dr Shanahan when I attended an appointment for my wife. Nearing the end of my wife’s appointment, Dr Shanahan noticed that I had psoriasis on my elbows. He began to inquire about my current treatments and did a partial examination regarding some of my pain which I did not realize was associated with psoriasis. He suggested that I be seen by a rheumatologist. I’d never been as comfortable with a DR as I was with him that day.

I made an appointment with Dr Shanahan and he put me in a treatment plan for psoriatic arthritis. I’ve had several follow up appointments and have had pleasant experiences each time. No long waits, calming bedside manner, and gives me as much time as I need to answer any questions and concerns.

I HIGHLY recommend this practice! I feel like I now have a Dr I can feel comfortable around. Very pleased with his approach.
