Fine Arts at the Mountain

Fine Arts at the Mountain is a new and highly recommended music store providing everything from violins, guitars, banjos, pianos, horns, and mandolins, plus more!! Mike and Netta, the owners, are extremely kind and passionate people and welcome all of their visitors like family! They give lessons professionally and their instruments are kept up with and high quality. I was classically trained and have experienced several brands of equipment, and Fine Arts has great material to work with. They have a top notch luthier and are able to repair instruments as well. If you are any form of musician or favor music, don’t hesitate to visit their shop! You will not regret it! 10/10!!!

Michael is an extremely talented musician, but his ability to teach music and connect with his students is perhaps his greatest talent. My seven year old son just finished his first session (14 weeks) of piano lessons, and watching him progress from week to week has been truly amazing. Michael's lessons are fun, and he has a knack for knowing exactly what to say, when to say it and how to say it. My son loves his weekly lessons, and he loves to practice.

Netta organizes the store and the lessons, and, in general, keeps the whole thing running. She is talented in her own right and interprets music via sign language.

I love the shop owners, they are so kind and generous. They offered us free service and products for my friend's first guitar and they were very helpful and kind the whole way. I would definitely recommend for anyone in the area as the prices are really good and the people and service are wonderful.

Update. We bought a piano and guitar from them and absolutely love the gear. The guitar plays wonderfully and digital piano is fantastic. I highly recommend buying from Fine Arts at the Mountain.

This is a wonderful find of a music store that far exceeded my expectations. They have a good selection of mid to master level violins, strings, rosin, bows.... additionally, they have banjos, mandolins, keyboards, and a good number of guitars. The owner was very pleasant and helpful. This is the go to place in Monteagle/Sewanee for musical instruments. I will be back.

TL;DR: This is my lesson experience: enjoyably learning and understanding practical music theory, immediate improvement, and no rote learning.

The best and most productive music lessons of my experience have been with Mr. Michael Karr.

I have had three cello-specific teachers and three piano-specific teachers (all either in Williamson County or here). Only two tried to teach theory, and neither presented enough or in a comprehensible fashion — I didn’t understand chords, chord progressions, or arpeggios until the first lesson with Mr. Karr. His focus is Not on rote learning; Instead, our lessons are based on the desire to make music and he helps me understand how melodies and harmonies work together in various ways without over-the-head technicality. The results have exceeded expectations: I am able to improvise and harmonize with others significantly more easily and enjoyably -- it’s night and day.
His main instrument is not the cello, yet I learned more from him about my instruments in our first sitting together than the other teachers I have had -- who received education specifically for one instrument -- combined. Immediately after the first lesson, my mom (guitar) and I were able to sit down and play songs while I improvised harmony on both cello and piano. There has not been a moment during which I did not learn something with him.

Decent little shop, if you're a local it's really your only option. However, their hours aren't very consistent, and their prices are very high. If you play anything other than piano, mandolin, or guitar you may have trouble finding what you're looking for. Overall, I would call and ask if they're open and have what you need before going.
