The walk to the glacier tongue on path S1 (well signed starting at visitor center) was 2 km each way (1.5 km to the warning signs and then more to go past that to the edge of the water). The views of the glacier are beautiful. Walk is relatively flat (until you go past the sign) and worth the effort.

Such a wonderful attraction on the day to visit Vatnajokull National Park to evidence of the glacier lagoon that I experienced on a sunny day enhanced the stunning view and allowed us to get closer to the glacier.

Short walk along the trail from the visitor centre to the glacier. Bitterly cold with a biting wind but worth the effort. Some interesting frozen small waterfalls along the way. Good cafe to thaw out in when you get back.

First off, amazing place. Road to reach here is rough. Can be done in most vehicles but be prepared to drive at a crawl pace. You'll probably have it mostly to yourself. Went in August and was all alone. There is a hiking trail along the left side of the lagoon toward the glacier. It gets progressively harder and dangerous as you're walking on a slant. There is a point I turned around due to the possibility of sliding down the loose rock 100ft and landing in ice cold water that you probably won't get out of. Respect nature and enjoy being face to face with a glacier!

We have stopped by here during our ride across Iceland, and it was a great decision. We took a short S1 track, which took around 90 mins along with the sightseeing. Make sure you wear warm clothes - around the glacier is very windy and cold, so you’ll probably need a jacket.

Easy flat walk from the visitor's center, but alot of sand at the end to get close to the glacier. About 3km round trip. Defintely worth it to get that close to a glacier, but we did like the Svínafellsjökull Glacier better because of the lake at the end with floating icebergs. Each are equally beautiful and worth seeing though

Very easy hike to the beautiful glacier.
Definitely worth it. There were no people around when we visited it.

Unique glacier…. We need to protect before is to late!!

"Skaftafellsjökull gönguleið" translates to "Skaftafellsjökull hiking trail" in English. Skaftafellsjökull is a glacier in Vatnajökull National Park, located in the southern part of Iceland. The glacier is part of the larger Vatnajökull glacier, Europe's largest glacier.

The hiking trail in the Skaftafellsjökull area provides an opportunity for visitors to explore the glacier and its surroundings. Keep in mind that glacier hiking can be physically demanding and potentially hazardous, so it's important to have the appropriate gear and, in some cases, a guided tour for safety.

It has a nice view of the glacier and the trail was pretty easy. Just about no elevation.

Randonnée très facile à plat sur un sentier en gravier menant à la lagune du glacier. Peter de voir le bord du glacier. Longer la lagune permet de voir le glacier dans tout sa largeur et de s’éloigner du monde venu en bus…
