Great place to visit with kids. There is bird show, treasure hunting game for kids (to be purchased for 2 EUR), outdoor playground with lot of attractions and the castle tour itself could be suitable for kids as old as 3 years old. The walking trail to the castle is suitable for strollers but it is very steep at the end.

Exceptionally well-preserved Castle.
The bird show is very good and entertaining.

The tour is also worth the effort. You can follow along in most languages.

The walk-up is not too bad, but if you don't like climbing, take the lift.

Come early because it can get crazy busy. We arrived around 9, and it was perfect, we were able to do the tour straight away and watch the bird show at 11.

It was very good fun for a half day.

The falconry show was very cool. We fought on a rainy day so not as many birds as usual. The culture seemed to say, “Screw you guys, I’m not going out in this!” I wouldn’t either, vulture. I feel your pain. But it was a lot of fun. All the talk was in German so I think we missed a lot of cool facts. The tour was excellent though. Only one hour but very interesting and you get to see a lot of the castle. The view from the bell tower is great.

Beautiful castle with an astonishing view on the mountains around you.
The birdshow is impressive with not just phalcons, but large eagles and vultures too.
The interior of the castle itself is only by guided tour, but most of the exterior and some chambers are accessible without the need for the tour.

Initially inspired to visit as this was the inspiration for the call of duty map but it was more than that. The setting was out of this world and the tour in this place was fu of history and the guide was so enthusiastic even though I wasn't German, I could feel the passion coming from the guide. The building itself was well preserved and you could really appreciate the stone masonry of the castle. To top it off, there was a bird show in the courtyard area that was unexpected and unique but really added to the overall experience. If you're in the area of Werfen, it is a no-brainer to come here for only €12-€15.

Beautiful castle with the wonderful view. We walk from parking 15 min or you can use the cable car. The guide guy was very funny and make tour interesting. What was perfect, we used for kids the audio guide in our language.

Burg Hohenwerfen fortress exceeded all our expectations during our recent trip to Austria in May!

The medieval charm really captivated us, and there are tons of activities to do which made it a perfect family outing.

The outdoor falconry demonstration was absolutely breathtaking, and our castle tour guide was informative and friendly.

The food offering, while limited, was delicious and much needed during a day of walking and sightseeing.

Also, prepare for quite a hike! The castle and fortress is much larger than we expected with lots of hills. Bring hiking shoes. And also, you can’t miss a tour to the top of the fortress from the look out point. The views are spectacular! A must must must see 💙😍

Really nice experience. Excellent food in the restaurant. And as a bonus is the association with one of my favourite movies "Where eagles dare". The eagles and vultures show was an unexpected bonus.

First we thought there was not much to see - but after the lift up, the main grounds offers a Cafe and games for kids.
You cannot see the inside of the castle without a tour! ( Included in ticket, but it determines the time you spend here) - the castle is sprawled out so plenty to see if you decide not to wait for the tour.
The 3 ' galleries' we enjoyed - especially the one about the film shot here : the comments were very funny.
The bird of prey show is great : mainly German, with a little English explanation, but the birds don't care.
The walk down to the car park is beautiful. Just be aware to time your visit so that you can do both tour and show - to get the most out of your visit.

This is a great castle to explore with a tour guide. They have many rooms, places, torture chambers, prisons, royal rooms and exhibitions.

Amazing history! It's better to get a guided tour so that you can enter the whole castle up to the bell! A whole 360° view. Perfect!

They have toilets and a souvenir shop as well!

Witch stories.

The best castle in Austria by far. It has a beautiful location, cool bird show with eagles, falcons and vultures. It has a lot of fun activities and expositions. And for COD players it looks very familiar😉🏹

A very enjoyable experience. We chose to go up and down by cable car and not on foot. The castle is amazing in its beauty and you feel a sense of power when you are inside it. There is a performance of eagles of various kinds and if you are childless I see no reason to see it. I strongly recommend and even twice to take the guided tour and not to give it up since interesting things are explained and told during the tour. I'm not sure if it's always like this or just sometimes but there were strong winds at this height of the castle. Of course, I didn't include all the photos so that you would still have the desire to go there and see everything for yourself, I don't believe you will regret it.

Amazing castle and views. Must see the birds show. Have audio guides in all languages. Worth visiting very recommended. Included in Salzburger land card but you have to pay for the lift.

Fascinate and impressive castle we are very recommend. We took the lift, but maybe if the weather was better we probably needed to walk. The falcons show was amazing, even we did not understand a word in German. The guided tour was very interesting, also for the kids, since they had their own audio guide in Hebrew, with explanations that are directed to kids. They enjoyed to visit the prison, bell tower and the birds of prey behind the scene area. The coffee there was not so good…

If you have the energy, the walk up is incredibly beautiful.
Wonderful castle packed with interesting history accessible in multiple languages.
The falconry show was incredible and unique.
I traveled around 6 hours for this visit and found it worthwhile, a must see day-trip if you stay closer such as in Salzburg.

A fantastic castle outside of Salzburg, seen briefly during the Sound of Music and featured in the movie “Where Eagles Dare.” To enter the castle, take the funicular railway up, the hill climb is very long. While the trail is pleasant, you can see it on the way down. Entrance into the castle interior is through a guided tour, which is only in German, but audioguides in many languages are available. There is also a very nice falconry show just outside the main castle building.

A beautiful castle, attractions inside and a cable car ride straight from the parking lot. I have seen many castles but this one is gorgeous!
