The gwydir house and the sprawling grounds was definitely a feast for ones eyes. The rich history preserved very well within the house truly transports you to another era.
The gardens very own residents, the majestic peacocks put on the best show as we explored the castle and its grounds. Truly a one off experience.

Had our wedding here in June 2023. It was a bright summer day, but we still had fire on and candles lighting the room, it was perfect. We ended up having just 15guess, 10adults and 5 toddlers but lovely room size even if you had more or less. We had Prosecco afterwards while harpist played and some beautiful pictures in the gardens. I’m just sorry we didn’t ask the harpist to play in courtyard. My husband and I went for a walk on our own, but turned back and gathered everyone to join us on a wonder around the gardens, unplanned but beautiful. Paddy was an absolute gent throughout, helping make everything come together.

I did not stay the night, I just visited the grounds, and it was worth driving out of the way to be here. I've been to many estates and castles, but this is definitely towards the top. The gardens are beautiful, and the interior has been reconstructed/preserved beautifully! Plus, it has a fascinating history. I'm shocked this place is not more popular. If I'm ever in the area, I will be back!

Vastly exceeded our expectations. Quite an extraordinary place. It gives you a real feel for what it must have been like to live in Tudor times. Staff and owners lovely. Would highly recommend

Gwyder is a great place to visit. It was built beginning in the 1300's and is being slowly rebuilt by the current owners including some of the original furniture and wall coverings. There's a lot of history here.

We recently spent a couple of nights at Gwydir. This is a magical place, from its ancient mood to its tuneful resident peacocks, not forgetting the two friendly lurchers, Barnaby and Pip. Gwydir is so steeped in history, it's palpable.

Lovely afternoon out. Self guided tour gives you plenty of time to have a look around the house, plenty of information sheets to explain as you go. Very nice gardens with some very interesting water features. Lots of peacocks and peahens wandering around.

Seems a little known place, I'd lived nearby many years before hearing about it. Beautiful house, lovingly restored. The gardens are so tranquil and well kept. My kids love visiting, particularly to see the peafowl. Thanks

A place of tranquility and serenity; where you can really embed yourself in a bygone era. Beautifully and sympathetically restored to bring history to life. It is not a place to be invaded by photographs indoors as it is a home and should be respected for that.

Beautiful and charming Castle and very well curated garden. This place offers an amazing experience in a genuine and unique land full of local culture. The Peacocks offer an unforgettable show themselves. Then the interiors are just unique. Must visit. Children friendly.

Not so much a castle as a stately home, well worth a visit, grounds are beautiful loads of peacocks! The inside is very well preserved ,cant take photos unfortunately but you can imagine how they lived hundreds of years ago.Very peaceful.

What a litlle gem! A stunning piece of history lovingly restored against all the odds by its owners. A beautiful Manor house and grounds with trees planted in Charles I era. Gorgeous cakes from the local bakery served in the grounds amongst the resident peacocks. A wonderful place.

Great castle, strange experience though. Walked through a corridor and saw someone in Old fashioned clothing run in the adjacent hallway. Went to see if they were OK, but no one there. Extremely cold in that corridor too. It sounded like there was a dog in the wall too, but then it could have just been creaking as it is an old castle. Good stay though, strange experience added to the mysterious atmosphere.

A real gem. A beautiful historical home being lovingly restored by friendly owners. Flocks of peacocks roam the gardens and hope to grab your cake at the tea tent. We'll worth a visit

This place is like no other. We’ve just stayed for 3 nights & couldn’t recommend it more. We were immediately made to feel welcome by the Owner Judy and Paddy, who takes care of the housekeeping & guests. Our room was clean, warm & welcoming. Comfy bed, private bathroom with a huge bath and plenty of hot water, tea and coffee making facilities in the room, plenty of towels and a towelling robe each. Breakfast was freshly made and nothing was too much trouble. This stay was an experience... a step back in time, no telly needed! Such an atmospheric place, quiet, relaxing and full of history. The place oozes love. Hats off to Judy & Peter for creating a wonderful venue for us all to enjoy. Gwydir is an ongoing project.... after reading Judys book it’s amazing to actually see how their labour of love has transformed this unique house back to its former glory. I would definitely recommend reading the book (Castles in the Air) then coming to see this gem yourself. We will definitely be back. Rebekka - Stafford.

I love the story behind Gwydir, not just the history spanning the centuries but the one created by the present owners, who realised a dream when they took on an almost derelict old building (which they were able to see the potential of) and restored it lovingly and painstakingly to make it their own little fairytale. How beautiful their restoration is, too. The house is a marvellous testimony to Judy and Peter's tenacity, attention to details and passion for this superb building. Parking is free, and it's an easy, short walk to the grounds which are exceptionally well maintained. A little tent outside houses a gentleman who takes your admission money and you can stop and samples teas, coffees and cakes, if you must - and you must! It's a lovely relaxed arrangement of genteel charm and adds to the character and reminds you - this isn't a commercial centric affair, this is someone's home and they are good enough to share it with us. It's delightful, and it's well worth a visit. Go there without delay! Sadly we weren't staying in either of the letting rooms, although having seen the house, we're going to go back and sample the bed and breakfast offerings of Gwydir, which I am sure won't let us down.

Delightful experience! We loved the 17 Peacocks and especially several baby Peacocks. The Castle is very original with a fascinating history, including a ghost room!
Loved the flora and fauna incuding a lime green and blue dragonfly hovering over the water gardens. Lovely to see a couple with the knowledge and passion needed for this wonderful restoration project.

Very wet so it was not as enjoyable as it should have been. The fireplaces were amazing xx

We just spent a week in the gatehouse. We were utterly charmed by Judy, Peter, their castle and the peacocks! Both my husband and I devoured Judy’s book about their restoration of the castle in about 3 nights and we very soon felt like part of the furniture. And what a story it is! We never met any of the ghosts but the place is so steeped in history, it was a delight just to absorb it for a week.

We racked our brains for a word to describe the keening cry of the peacocks (screech? shriek? whistle? wail? mew? caterwaul?) who sent up a chorus every time something interesting happened (such as a car passing). The were very friendly and kept us entertained for hours. Our sorrow at the demise of the lone chick in the courtyard (hungry fox...) was tempered by the discovery of five vigorous ones with their mum up by the chapel in the forest.

We had free roam of the castle gardens which were worthy of a grand stately home whilst retaining their own wild quality. It was hard to imagine them being flooded every winter.

The gatehouse itself was charming, if small but had everything one could want for a week’s stay. My only complaint was the mattress was terribly uncomfortable and gave me aches and pains. For that reason I don’t think I’d have managed 2 weeks on that bed. The fridge was also very small, requiring frequent shopping so as not to overfill it.

We loved Gwydir! Thank you Judy and Peter for restoring the castle for the enjoyment of all.
