We had the most beautiful lunch! I dined here with two friends and it felt like we ordered everything on the menu, but not a single thing was less than perfect. Diego was helpful, charming and knowledgable. Service all round was relaxed but attentive, and the martini is banging.

The staff was very kind to reserve a table for us within the day, we have 4 adults, 1-year old kid and a dog; the service was perfect; great ambience; every dish was decent and delicious! Recommend to make a reservation in advance!

Best place to hang out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Top quality coffee by the lovely Beth. Tricolour tomato galette is out of this world. Pasta is of course, fabulous. Love the vibe.

We dined on Friday night and have been coming here since opening. Usually for coffees and pastries on Saturday mornings, and occasionally for dinner and it gets better each time. Asparagus was seasonal and delicious, pasta as usual perfect and great drinks range.

What a refreshing addition to Saffron Walden Chater’s has been.

Just looking through the reviews and see the usual morons, Chicken Korma and pint of Stella types complaining about portion sizes and prices.

Ignore the weekend warriors and get here if you want to support a family run local Independant.

Amazing place. We had 'bread and butter', pate and some grilled tender stem broccoli as small plates. The small plates were amazing with the bread a particular stand out. So good. We then had a bowl of pasta each and it was superb. We had no space for anything so took a bake away with us, which were also amazing. A big shout to the Botivo drink we had too.

The staff were really welcoming and friendly. I had worried that it might be 'stuffy' but it wasn't at all. Really chilled.

If you get the chance then I highly recommend going. If you're just passing then go grab some of their baked goods.

Very good Wood Street Coffee and cakes. The vibe is super relaxing with friendly staff.
We didn’t stay for lunch but the menu and quality of food looks great, with affordable prices - £5 negroni! We will be back to eat.
Not many places you can buy Estate Dairy butter either so we left very happy.

Update - we’ve been back to Chater’s many times now for coffee, lunch and dinner. Service is so lovely, food really good quality. I just wish you did brunch!! :)

Always friendly on arrival. Organised and relaxed atmosphere. Even if the venue is full you're able to hold a conversation due to the good acoustics of the building unless you have a mouthful of their delicious food. Recently had their carbonara... melt in the mouth, absolutely delicious from start to finish! 1000% recommend

We had a great time at Chaters. Max the owner was very friendly and knowledgable about all of the dishes and wines, and made us feel right at home. We loved the carbonara, vodka pasta, roscoff onion, the sausages, and tiramisu. A great addition to Saffron Walden

Gorgeous, cool, relaxed hidden gem tucked away from sight from the street. The food is absolutely delicious Very high level presentation, excellent ingredients, impressive food all round. Staff were very friendly, attentive and relaxed.
The atmosphere is great, chill music, retro styled furniture, temp and lighting all spot on. Finding it difficult to find any fault. We'll done ✔

Impeccable on all fronts! Chaters quickly became a favourite for coffee and cake in the day when it opened, but we only just managed to get there for dinner and we were extremely impressed (but not surprised, everyone raves about it!). The fresh pasta was divine and each of the small plates held their own - the steak tartare in particular was pretty outstanding. The staff were friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was a really lovely blend of informal, cosy and yet really special. Simplicity and sophistication all at once. We are so lucky to have this place in Saffron Walden and we can't wait to return to try the rest of the menu. Thank you!

Our new favourite place in Saffron Walden. This shabby chic, super cool place was set up to utilise the additional space the owners had after moving their distillery from London to Essex, and I am really pleased they did.

The food is - particularly for its price point - astonishing. Imaginative small plates and beautiful pasta made on the premises. The herbs and veg come from Audley end (just up the road) and another local supplier who I cant remember (sorry). It means you get an interesting mix of very authentic Italian food and local produce.

The Tomato Tonnato was absolutely amazing. Fresh tomatoes atop a fish base. I’m not a Buratta fan but really enjoyed the fresh whole buratta with an orange dressing.

The Carbonara was made using egg white rather than cream. The Fish pasta dish was simple, fresh and beautiful.

Service was lovely. The owner is obviously present (I love owner managed businesses) and the staff are well trained and very enthusiastic.

I had wine by the glass which wasn’t the best but next time (and there will be one) we will make it a bigger night out and buy a bottle.

A real Saffron Walden gem! We went for dinner and enjoyed all the food & drink. We had their small plates (burrata, pecorino with honey and coffee, fresh bread with burnt butter and gordal olives), fresh pasta dishes (bucatini carbonara and bigoli alla nerano), natural wine (white and rosé), desserts (tiramisu and Happy Endings ice cream sandwich), Vault aperitivo and Wood Street coffee. It’s a fantastic setting and service was friendly and welcoming. Such a great vibe!

We came to Saffron Walden for a weekend and came here twice - we were so impressed with the gin and tonic the first time that we had to come back! We had the pasta on our second visit and that was fab too. The service was also very friendly - we were a bit hesitant to go in the first time as it looked so popular we might not get a table, but the staff came out to greet us and find us a seat! I highly recommend if you are in the area ☺

My friend and I had a wonderful meal last night. We shared some small plates pate, mortadella and bread and then had a sausage and fennel pasta dish. It was delicious. The waitress was very knowledgeable and helpful as my friend can't eat anything with egg in. The Italian wine was lovely. We both really enjoyed it.

Came to Saffron Walden for a little day out and spotted a sign for this place just as the heavens opened. Lucky me! The space is beautiful, service is so lovely and the food was fantastic. Great wine selection too, and the deli section had so many of my fave brands. If I lived in the area I’d be every day – what a nice place to hang out!

Staff were extremely knowledgeable and welcoming and took the time to explain the menu and the ethos/history of the restaurant. The owner max was very attentive, even tried to help us get a taxi at the end of the evening. The atmosphere is very cool, very chilled with lovely ambient lighting and the place just had a good buzz to it. The food was incredible too, I couldn’t really fault anything we had and will definitely be back to try more in the menu!

Group of 4 friends catching up normally in each others houses. But Chaters was a wonderful change. Excellent choice of small plates, and the chef created a non cheesy pasta dish for me not on the menu as my large plate. Can highly recommend the blood orange spritz. Excellent atmosphere, every table taken (Friday evening) but still very good service. Will definitely be back.Delia.
