If you don't like good beer, good atmosphere, food , oh & great entertainment, & yes that's Dennis Stratton ex iron maiden guitarist hiding behind the bass player.

A little boozer just off the market square. It's quite small, so feels busy even when there's not all that many punters in. The burgers were decent enough, and there's a good selection of drinks. Bar staff seemed a bit confused, but service was ok. We didn't try the beer garden on account of the weather, but it's great that they have one! Don't expect the Ritz but it's not a bad old pub at all.

Wonderful food and really calm place . The best fresh and well done cod fish I have eaten so far. 😍

Good place to drink a beer, the waitress is told you in every moment what happened or if she needs to up stairs to the kitchen.

Really enjoyed a leisurely lunchtime visit to this old Saffron Walden pub. It wasn't busy when we were there but it must be a popular place judging from the excellent range of beers and pub grub menu. I had a half pounder burger 🍔 which was so delicious that I sent my congratulations to the chef for producing the best burger that I remember eating! Well worth a visit and located just off the market place.

To be clear, this is the type of pub that this country is famous for. Great real ales and premium lagers enough wines to meet most requirements. The lunchtime food is what I want from a pub, honest and hearty and won't leave you hungry. When my wife and I first moved to this town we found the pub regulars were very welcoming and always more than willing to join you in the big debate of the day. Ash looks after his customers and beer with equal aplomb.

Fabulous little pub with live music in the back room on Saturdays. Choice of decent ales and an open fire.

Myself and my wife popped in with a couple of friends after having a walk around the market. Lovely fire going, good selection of very nice real ales and a fabulous selection of different gins and tonics. Been before and will definitely be going again. Also worth noting they show the Six Nations games.

Superb "back street" pub with an excellent choice of well kept ale, craft ale and lagers. Staff are great, too!
Not eaten there but never heard a complaint.
There's often great music in a back room on weekend nights.

This is a pub. They do food during the day. And a pub the other times. That isn't a derogatory remark. The landlord, I assume, Ash, may seem odd, but is purely watching his bar as a landlord should. It is a diverse place where you get locals drinking, a book club that Ash caters for and just a friendly traditional pub. If only there were more of these. Well done.

A lovely quaint pub. Great customer service, even bringing the drinks over to the table, also a great selection of drinks and a brilliant atmosphere. Will definitely return again soon

Lovely pub, only pop in occasionally lunch times when I’m in the area and it’s just got a proper friendly quiet pub feel. Ales always superb, sat there once with a fantastic pint from the Tring Brewery I think it was, just me and another fella there both reading and just the sound of the clock ticking away in the background. That day was over 10 years ago but it still one of the most memorable pints I’ve had lol. Great place....

Great lunch. Ham was running low but the quality of everything else made up for it. Paige was a fantastic host and looked after us excellently. Will certainly be back to try some other selections from the menu.

I like this place, usually quite quiet (which I like). Nice log burning fire. Nice beers.

EDIT - since my initial review I've been back twice for Sunday lunch. I really enjoyed it both times, tried both pork and beef. Both were excellent. Staff are really friendly moved my score from 4 to 5.

Three of us ate lunch here on a cold and wintry day. This is a classic town-centre pub where we found excellent service from a cheerful and helpful barmaid. Clearly this is a pub that is favoured by locals and we would recommend it to anyone looking for a pleasant ambience, especially because there is car parking (if you can find it!). The fire burned warmly and the food was up to a high standard for pub food.
Recommended.

We rocked up on spec as a boisterous family of grandparents, three other adults and three children and were made to feel so welcome. We had a lovely table in a room to the side all to ourselves. Paige is worth her weight in gold: helpful, friendly, brilliant with the kids. We also couldn't fault the young man who served us either. The food was good pub grub, including a homemade vegan option. A great family lunch - thank you!
