Best Sichuan food in Durham. One of the best in North East.

Fantastic Sichuan Restaurant. Popular amongst the Chinese students, don't expect traditional British Chinese food, instead enjoy great flavours, new ingredients and lots of spice.

The food is delicious and the service is fast! I recommend the noodles soup and plenty of rice. The waiting time is reasonable.

On a visit to Durham with friends, we stopped at this restaurant on the first day after a long journey, everything tasted amazing, so good that we went back on our fourth and final day to try more of the menu. Big surprise everything was incredible again. I don't usually leave reviews but this was a very pleasant experience that I'll remember.

We had the braised pork noodle soup, spicy braised beef noodle soup, and the lamb chops. The lamb chops were really good and it came in a really grand presentation. The pork noodle soup was really nice, but the meat can be a little bit more tender. For the braised beef soup, it was nice but the broth was just more spicy and you can’t really taste the richness of it compared to the pork one. But overall, good food and fair prices. We got 10% discount for cash payment and it totaled up to £37.35 for all three dishes (incl the jasmine tea too!)

Excellent authentic food nothing anglicised. Like most Chinese restaurants you get 10% off if paid by cash.

The restaurant have good music and a nice atmosphere, the staff is very friendly and helpful. The food is defiantly worth taking the trip all the way down from Manchester as recommended by dear friends of mine.

The menu here is embarrassingly large. The food itself comes in large portions, and it's very reasonably priced. General atmosphere will be improved considerably when the bus station is finished. No fault of restaurant, but it's best to ask for a table towards the back.

The food was delicious, and the portions enormous.
The staff were so kind, too, providing extra napkins, sauces, and take out boxes.
It was also excellent value, as a family of five, we all ate extremely well for circa £100 including drinks…. And we have leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch, as well.

Very authentic proper Chinese food. Some is very spicy, but it's all is very nice (as long as you like the things like tripe in some of the dishes). Menu translations aren't great so bring a native Chinese speaker! Service was good. It does get very busy though so book in advance or go early.

Great restaurant. The food is tasty and it seems like real deal. Many people from China seem to approve it. The spices they use can really numb your tongue and make the water taste weird. Delicious, will definitely come back

Huge portions, quick and friendly service, with great food, all at reasonable prices. This was our first time at Fifty Six, but it won't be our last.

Delicious, authentic, spicy - overjoyed to have a decent, reasonably-priced Chinese restaurant in Durham at last. Definitely go - ask the staff if you'd prefer something less spicy as they are very helpful.

Highly recommended. I think (and I'm no expert) that it's Shanghai-based food (lots of buns on the menu).

Properly cooked, properly served and a menu that uses pictures to show unfamiliar customers what the dishes are like.

The food was soooo great!!! Just found out that it is a chain restaurant. We have also tried the one in New Castle. That was awesome as well!
