Situated just before the entrance to Beamish, this is a lovely gem of a pub. It is a traditional, no nonsense country pub with wholesome home cooked, delicious food. We visited on a Friday afternoon and it was easy enough to get seated. The staff were very friendly and there is a decent array of beers on tap. The menu isn’t extensive but has a nice choice of traditional pub meals such as steak, lasagne, gammon, corned beef pie etc. also has a kids menu. The staff took our food and drinks order at the table and the food was brought out within fifteen minutes. The home cooked chips were to die for! The only disappointment was the lack of ‘normal’ cola on tap.
Prices very reasonable and we will definitely be back.

Comfy country pub with great food and menu choices. Plenty of parking spaces and motorbike space.
Update, another visit on a sunny day in May. Had the days special. Words/pictures wouldn't do it justice how tasty it was. My no1 spot for food

Lovely tasty food, happy and efficient staff. Even the filter coffee was lovely. Mixed Grill £12:95 I would have happily paid £20. Everything too cheap for that quality and amount imo.

Very good pub food and ales, very reasonably priced, I've eaten here 3 times in the last 9 months while staying at the Campsite nearby and it's always consistently good quality.

The food here is awesome and well priced. You'll find something to enjoy from the menu. It's a warm and friendly place with great staff that are more than happy to help. A good example of this is when I asked if I could bring my mountain bike inside... No problem.

Great outside facilities too.

Nice little family pub. Food was great love homemade chips, price was really fair for what you got. Shame if your driving £4 for a pint of coke is overkill

It's been 40 years since I last visited the Shepherd and Shepherdess but the atmosphere, service and overall experience does not seem to have diminished with the years. The food was outstanding, the portions were huge, the beers was beautiful and the staff were amazing. Love this place, won't leave it as long next time!!

Found this place after visiting Durham for the day and decided to go for some food. We went at midday on Sunday, so it was really busy and we were not expecting to get a table. No tables were free so we chanced asking at the bar, where a lovely lad said he will make sure we get seated and let us order food and drinks in the meantime. We were only waiting 5-10 minutes and were shown to a table. We ordered the minted lamb chop special and a mixed grill and it was the nicest food we’ve had in a while. Dessert did not disappoint either. The prices are so reasonable, especially for the mixed grill at 12.95, as the portion is massive and you pay more than that at chain pubs that give less food at a lower quality! Overall, a cosy traditional pub and we will definitely be driving the 30 minute trip from Sunderland to revisit soon.

Amazing food at a great price. Don't know how they do it. Book though it gets busy especially when Beamish shuts.

Really lovely wee place. We stopped in after visiting Beamish. The food was so tasty and the portions were massive! I am autistic and they could not have been more helpful with my order which honestly makes such a difference to my dining experience. Highly recommend. Thank you to all the staff. Will definitely come back next time we are down that way.
