Rented a pontoon boat to get there. And it was epic, a narrow channel into the island that was once a channel through it in ancient times makes for a landing perfectly for a pontoon boat. Walking the island was mostly difficult and so we didn't really. But still approaching and landing on the island was a major bucket list on our sailing trip this winter ok Dragon's Lair.

Mound Key is technically still closed after Hurricane Ian but is still accessible by kayaks and paddle board. The dock has been destroyed and the mound key signs were washed away.

This is an amazing spot. The entrance is in a hidden little cove that the Indians carved out back in the day. We had two 4 year olds with us that loved the island. We saw tortoises and various other animals along the trails. The island is also partially privately owned. That area is fenced off and you can see wild goats kicking around living the island life. Pretty cool!

Very cool. Few clues lead you to figure out the entrance and find the trail. Awesome day.

Great place to visit, read about the history online before you visit.
The main entrance is hidden. There is a small entrance for kayaks on the south side of the island. It's a much better experience to go with someone who is familiar with the area.
No many places around SW FL you get to do a little hiking. There is a guided tour on February 20th 2016

Great island to kayak out to and explore for a bit. There are at least two beaches to land your kayak on - one on the western side of the island that will require walking through some wet trails and one on the southeastern side of the island that immediately leads to the trails on the island. This used to serve as the capital city of the Calusa.

Have visited multiple times. This is the site of an ancient, native city, the capital of the Calusa tribe. Mounds and canals built by indigenous people before Europeans arrived are visible. For me, this island has more magic than any other place in Lee County (and there is a lot of magic in Lee County).

Interesting place to visit. We started kayaking from Koreshan State Park to get here. It was a long paddle. I would look for a closer boat ramp if there's a next time.

Very interesting spot, the trail has interesting displays to give a good idea about the history of the site and it's inhabitants. Only downside you can only reach it by boat or kayak

It took quite some time to get here and it’s very straightforward path but if you can get here by boat and spend the day roaming off the beaten path I’m 100% sure you’ll find some very cool things on this little deserted island

Always a fun spot to visit. Do NOT go barefoot. You have to trek through some murky water

Its small and difficult to find a portage area but if you like the water, hiking, and history you'll find this to be a cool spot.
